Adam (manga)

Adam is a character appearing in the Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V manga. Alongside Eve and Isaac, he was one of the original researchers on the phenomenon known as Genesis Omega Dragon.

Design[edit]

Appearance[edit]

Adam appears as a tall, dark-skinned young man, though far older than appearances. Unlike Eve and everyone else exposed to G.O.D.'s power, Adam has kept his youthful appearance without discolorations, and still wears the uniform he wore when he was a university student.

Origin[edit]

In the Hebrew Bible, Adam was the first man, who lived in paradise, the Garden of Eden, together with Eve.

Biography[edit]

A long, long time ago, in the distant future when the story of the ARC-V manga takes place, the lovers Adam and Eve attended a prestigious university together. This future, despite all its advancements, had still not solved the problem of war, and the lovers had fled from their homes as refugees. But despite their ordeals, they were dedicated to helping the world through science. Their convictions moved another student named Isaac, who quickly joined them on their research into Solid Vision, the system of Augmented Reality pioneered by Yusho Sakaki and Leo Akaba years ago.

The Solid Vision system worked by creating a virtual world between dimensions and allowing mass to move into and out of that world, and so the trio searched for a way to expand that virtual world. Until their research into dimensions led them to discover a gateway to another world, filled with a seemingly-limitless power. Power to not only cut through space, but through time as well. This power, they thought, would be the key to peace for their world, a power that would create limitless possibilities for the world, for the universe. And so they sought to harness this energy and seal it within a card. But Adam soon realized that the only way they could control this power was to use a human conduit, and he volunteered.

His experiment was a success, and the power allowed him to travel through time, from the time of dinosaurs to the time of man. But Adam also began to understand that the energy possessed its own will. Eve, sensing the risks inherent in associating with such a will, immediately advocated abandoning the project, but Adam was undeterred, and persevered. Eventually, he found that gateway again with this entity's power, and he entered it. On the other side he found what he knew to be this entity's home.

Dead planets, lit by desolate stars. A reality of ruin and desolation.

And so, knowing that whatever power he and his team had unleashed could not be left to its own devices, Adam sealed a portion of its power within his own soul, and prevent the creature from awakening. He disappeared from his time, stuck in a rift in time and space. Eve and Isaac were left alone, with nothing but their grief and the dormant card containing the creature known as Genesis Omega Dragon. However, they were still able to draw upon G.O.D.'s power to move through time, and so the duo began their new mission: bring Adam back.

Much later, in the past, Adam witnessed the World Illusion, Yusho Sakaki's last magic trick to save his world. From the tragedy though, he watched as two separate machines brought two boys, Yuya Sakaki and Reiji Akaba, safely through the illusion and into the past by around twenty years. In these two, Adam saw the potential to finally stop G.O.D., and so he fragmented his seal on G.O.D.'s power into three parts, three Adam Factors, and gifted one to each boy.

Later again, a bit further in the past but finally in the present of the story, Reiji finally discovers Eve's hiding place, and travels with Yuya to confront her and claim G.O.D.. While Yuya eventually Duels Eve himself, Reiji has a vision and meets Adam himself. Adam apologizes for all the things that has happened for his research. Not just ruining Reiji and Yuya's lives, but those too of Eve and Isaac, as well as their new cohorts Ren and Sora Shiunin. Reiji asks why he and Yuya were gifted the Adam Factor, the key to G.O.D.'s power. Adam replies calmly that, for good or worse, G.O.D.'s power was sealed in a card. He then admits sheepishly that he's actually quite terrible at the game, having always been soundly beaten by Eve and Isaac, and so he can't really be counted on to reclaim the card himself.

Reiji asks if Adam called him here to take back the Adam Factor, but Adam replies that Reiji is here to receive the second part possessed by Adam. Adam knows that weak as G.O.D. is right now, Yuya will certainly be able to defeat Eve and claim the card. He also knows that Yuya will destroy it if given the chance, because he has no attachment to the card other than pain. But Adam also knows how Reiji truly feels, as he feels it himself. Adam, Eve, Isaac, Reiji's father Leo, all of them gave their lives in pursuit of the truth behind G.O.D.'s power, and destroying the card means destroying the proof that any of the ordeals they've suffered ever happened. And so Adam gifts the second Adam Factor to Reiji.

Soon enough, as Adam predicted, Yuya finally defeats Eve, who had been taken over by Genesis Omega Dragon. Adam finally appears before Eve: he could have approached much sooner, but doing so would awaken G.O.D. and threaten reality itself. But now, she and the others are free from its influence. Adam leaves the future to Yuya and Reiji, and returns to the rift of time, finally at peace with the problems he caused. He asks if Eve will accompany him, and she accepts without hesitation, and the two lovers depart, never to be seen again.
