Card Rulings:Spell of Pain
TCG Rulings
- “Spell of Pain” ‘switches’ damage, like “Barrel Behind the Door.” It does not actually have an effect itself that ‘inflicts’ damage.[1]
- “Spell of Pain” is chained to an effect that would inflict damage to you.[1]
- You cannot activate “Spell of Pain” during the Damage Step.[1]
OCG Rulings
- "Spell of Pain" activates in chain to an opponent's card effect which inflicts damage.
- Example: "Spell of Pain" can be activated in chain to "Ectoplasmer", "Ring of Destruction", and "Cannon Soldier".[2]
- "Spell of Pain" does not inflict damage. It makes the damage be inflicted to the opponent instead of you.[2]
- You cannot activate this card during the Damage Step.[3][2]
Mentions in Other Rulings
- You can only activate "Barrel Behind the Door" in chain to an effect which inflicts damage. "Power Bond" does not start a chain, so you cannot activate "Barrel Behind the Door".[4]
