Q&A Rulings
- Q: There are 2 monsters on my field, a single monster on my opponent's field, and "Lair of Darkness" is face-up in my Field Zone. In this situation, after activating and resolving a Counter Trap Card such as "Drastic Drop Off", if I activate the effect of "Voltanis the Adjudicator" in my hand, can I apply the effect of "Lair of Darkness"?
- A: To activate the effect of "Voltanis the Adjudicator" in your hand, you must Tribute all monsters on your field as the cost, so normally you cannot Tribute any of your opponent's monsters by applying the effect of "Lair of Darkness". In this scenario, since there are 2 monsters on your field, you can only activate the effect of "Voltanis the Adjudicator" by Tributing those 2 monsters. However, in a situation where you have no monsters on your field and wish to activate the effect of "Voltanis the Adjudicator", you can apply the effect of "Lair of Darkness" and Tribute only 1 DARK monster on your opponent's field.[1]
Previously Official Rulings
These TCG rulings were issued by Upper Deck Entertainment and have since been declared unofficial by Konami.[2] They were previously considered official and can still be correct, as long as they follow the official gameplay rules, or unless Konami has issued a ruling that says otherwise. - "Voltanis the Adjudicator" can be Special Summoned by its effect immediately after your Counter Trap's effects have resolved.
- Tributing all your monsters to Special Summon "Voltanis the Adjudicator" is a cost. If you do not have at least 1 monster to Tribute, you cannot activate this effect.
- If the negated effect was Chain Link 2 or higher, you can still activate "Voltanis the Adjudicator's" effect when the Chain resolves.
- "Voltanis the Adjudicator's" effect does not target the cards you want to destroy.
- "Voltanis the Adjudicator's" effect cannot be activated during the Damage Step.
- If "DNA Surgery" is on the field making all face-up monsters Fairy-Type, then all the face-up monsters you Tributed will count towards "Voltanis the Adjudicator's" effect for determining how many cards are destroyed by "Voltanis the Adjudicator".
- You cannot Special Summon "Voltanis the Adjudicator" if "Mask of Restrict" is active on the field.
- If you have 2 or more "Voltanis the Adjudicator" in your hand when your Counter Trap Card negates your opponent's effect, you can only activate the effect of 1 "Voltanis the Adjudicator", even if you negate multiple card effects.
- If you have "Voltanis the Adjudicator" and "Van'Dalgyon the Dark Dragon Lord" in your hand and your Counter Trap Card negates your opponent's card effect, you can Special Summon only 1 of the 2 monsters. You cannot Special Summon both monsters.
- If you draw "Voltanis the Adjudicator" during the Chain your Counter Trap Card negates the effect of your opponent's card(s), you can activate its effect after the Chain resolves.
- If you activate "Magic Drain" and your opponent discards 1 Spell Card, you cannot activate "Voltanis the Adjudicator's" effect.
- "Voltanis the Adjudicator's" effect can be activated when you activate "Goblin Out of the Frying Pan" or "Malfunction" to negate your opponent's Spell or Trap Card.
- "Royal Oppression" can be used to negate "Voltanis the Adjudicator's" effect to Special Summon itself.
- If you activate "Magic Jammer," etc. and discard "Night Assailant" for its activation cost, the effects of "Night Assailant" and "Voltanis the Adjudicator" will start a new Chain after the Chain that included your "Magic Jammer" resolves. "Night Assailant's" effect will be Chain Link 1 and "Voltanis the Adjudicator's" will be Chain Link 2.
Mentions in Other Rulings
- Synthetic Seraphim: After the "Synthetic Seraphim" Token is Special Summoned, when the Chain has finished resolving it may be Tributed to activate "Voltanis the Adjudicator's" first effect.
- Van'Dalgyon the Dark Dragon Lord: If you have "Voltanis the Adjudicator" and "Van'Dalgyon the Dark Dragon Lord" in your hand and your Counter Trap Card negates your opponent's card effect, you can Special Summon only 1 of the 2 monsters. You cannot Special Summon both monsters.
