Card legality

Card legality affects whether or not a Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game (TCG) or Yu-Gi-Oh! Official Card Game (OCG) card can be used in official tournaments. Card legality is separate from a card's status on the Forbidden & Limited Lists.

Only TCG cards can be used in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game.[1] Only OCG cards can be used in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Official Card Game.[2]

Usually, a card becomes legal for TCG tournament play as soon as it is released in an official TCG product.[1] In the TCG, cards obtained as subscription promos for Weekly SHONEN JUMP Magazine are legal one week after the Expected Delivery Date for that promo.[3]

Event-specific legalities[edit]

On very rare occasions, a major tournament will take place on the same weekend that a product containing new cards is released. Players who have to travel a significant distance to the event may not have time to obtain such new cards; so that they are not disadvantaged against local players, cards from that product may be declared not legal for that specific event only. In such as case, this information will be made publicly known before the event, either via a news announcement or an update to that event's FAQ page. If no announcement is made prior to the start of the event, it should be presumed that newly-released cards will be legal for that event.[1]

Region-specific legalities[edit]

Cards are not legal in a specific region until they are released in that region.

Promotional cards from books and video games become legal in a region on the date that their corresponding product becomes available in that region. If they are later reprinted in another product, they become legal when that product releases, regardless of the availability of their original printing.[1]

Promotional cards awarded as prizes (such as Sneak Peek Promotional Cards or Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series Prize Cards) are not legal for play in a region until an event takes place in said region awarding such a card.

The official European site displays a list of TCG cards that are not legal for use in Europe due to not having been released in Europe yet. The Oceanic site displays an equivalent list.

Illegal cards[edit]

Some cards have limitation text which specifically designates them as illegal in official tournaments. For example, the text "This card cannot be used in a Duel" is printed on Match winners (except "Victory Dragon") to designate them as illegal for use in official tournaments.
