Forum:Ancient city - rainbow ruins negation effect

Oy, I've been wondering about one of the effects of Ancient City - Rainbow Ruins for a while. The third effect says: "You can send 1 "Crystal Beast" monster you control to the Graveyard to negate the activation of a Spell or Trap Card and destroy it.". Do you have to send a monster from a monster card zone or can you pay the cost with a crystal beast monster card in a trap/spell card zone?

At first, it seemed to me like it had to be a crystal beast monster from a monster card zone, but the first sentence on my Ancient City - Rainbow Ruins reads: "This card gets these effects, based on the number of "Crystal Beast" monsters in your Spell & Trap Card Zone." which suggests to me that Ancient City - Rainbow Ruins accepts crystal beasts in spell/trap card zones as monsters for the purpose of its effects.

To further add to the confusion, Ancient City has been erratad to read ""Crystal Beast" cards" instead of ""Crystal Beast" monsters" in its first sentence which puts me back to my original train of thought. Anyone who can clear this matter out for me? Flesk 21:20, February 4, 2010 (UTC)

You have to send a "Crystal Beast" card from your Monster Card Zone, since cards in the Spell/Trap Cards Zone are not treated as monsters. See the rulings:

• For the "3+" effect, you have to send a "Crystal Beast" Monster to the Graveyard. You cannot send a "Crystal Beast" Spell Card. This is a cost.

One other thing. Can you pay the cost for the 3+ effect with a face down crystal beast? Pollinosis and Icarus Attack can pay for their effects with face down plants/winged beasts afaik, but those cards only say: "tribute one plant type monster" ( or winged beast in the case of Icarus Attack) while Ancient City asks you to send a crystal beast you control. I'm not sure on this, but those cards say "Tribute", Rainbow Ruins says "Send", so you can't really compare this Card to those. I would think no because there's a ruling for Darkness Neosphere saying: you cannot send a face-down Fiend-Type monster from your field to the Graveyard as a cost to activate the effect of "Darkness Neosphere" Falzar FZ 07:36, February 5, 2010 (UTC)

"Falzar FZ" is correct. If a cost "sends" monsters to the graveyard with a specific characteristic (like "a Crystal Beast monster", "a Light monster", "a monter with 1500 or less ATK", ect), then it cannot send a face-down monster. So Ancient City - Rainbow Ruins cannot send a face-down Crystal beast monster to activate its 3rd effect. (By the way, there are still exceptions by their rulings as Transcendent Wings). Costs that "tribute" monsters with a specific characteristic can tribute a face-down monster. ATEMVEGETA (Talk) 12:26, February 5, 2010 (UTC)
