Forum:Apoqliphort Towers vs Star Eater

On the field: Star Eater and Towers both in atk position; no Veiler effects in play etc.

SO the rulings state that if Star Eater attacks Towers, it'll be unaffected by Towers' -500 effect, regain its 3200 atk and destroy Towers. BUT, reading a little lit about the Damage Step ( http://www.yugioh-card.com/uk/gameplay/damage.html ), it seems like the ruling ought to say that Star Eater is still affected by Towers' effect until AFTER dmg calc has been performed - so, to me, that means Towers wins the battle because Star Eater is still affected by the -500 when damage calculation is being performed and monsters are being determined to have been destroyed or not (and Star Eater would have been determined to have been destroyed here). Thoughts? Explanations? Criticisms? PLEASE read the page connected to the link and reference its text with an explanation, in particular the "Perform Damage Calculation" and "After Damage Calculation" sub-steps. THANKS!

First, it's important to recognize that the Damage Step page is referring to effects that start a Chain (i.e. activate), whereas "Star Eater's" effect does not. "Star Eater's" effect applies as soon as it declares an attack.
Also, I think the official page mentioning that effects that activate "when this card battles" or "attacks or is attacked" activate after damage calculation is going to create more confusion than it solves, because there are plenty of cards with that activation timing that do not activate then (e.g. "Ally of Justice Core Destroyer", "Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Rhino", "Gem-Merchant", "Mecha Phantom Beast Tetherwolf"). There aren't even that many cards with that activation timing that activate after damage calculation ("Downerd Magician" is an example), but the ones that do and have PSCT all specify "after damage calculation". --SnorlaxMonster 06:19, January 11, 2016 (UTC)
