Forum:Benefits of watching the Yu-Gi-Oh Anime series?

I was wondering if watching the Yu-Gi-Oh shows would be beneficial to my understanding and enjoyment of the game? For example, will characters shown in the show have parallel cards in the game? Do cards, characters and concepts from season 1 still get used regularly today?

Also, if I start watching Yu-Gi-Oh should I start Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters which I am told is what the game is based on or the first anime series? Or would it be better to watch the first anime series after watching the other anime series which the game is based on?

Thanks!75.157.2.44 23:34, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

  • Umm well the first series(Toei) is very different because they play many different games, not just duel monsters. Will it benefit you... ... ...kind of. It varies. Some cards have different effects, they have cards that don't exist, etc. But when I was a beginner I think it helped a lot, plus it kind of updates you on what cards could be coming(Ex. Arcana Force was on the GX before it came out). Dmaster 23:48, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
  • Not really. There are very few anime duels that are truly in line with things that happen in the actual game. They are full of ridiculously situational cards and setups which rarely happen in real life (Judai getting Featherman, Burst Lady and Poly first turn almost every time, anyone?), not to mention there are occasionally cards which act completely different in the anime than in real life (players who put Bubbleman on the field with a full hand and start to draw 2 cards make me want to smack a chump). The anime is fun and enjoyable, but I wouldn't use it to try to make a strategy for the real game. Danny Lilithborne 01:05, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

....i think waching yugioh anime can help a bit for biginers. and some of the duels are fun and interactive(minus the hard to pull card in real live). you sould wach yugioh gx season 1. its full of duel with many kind of deck. its give you some picture of what kind of deck that beat the other deck. but for expert, you should play in real live whith expert or trie the online game. ok

Yeah lots of benefits!

First of all your learning how the game of duel monsters work. Second, your also seeing the anime characters reactions, emotions, and personalities, toward othe characters! Watching yugioh is awsome and there are way much more benefits for watching it then what i have on this message. just keep watching you'll eventually find out what i mean.! go relive your childhood and keep watching yugioh! Gotcha!

Yeah....

Personally, I pefer ya mom!.....But seriously, I prefer the anime. It has different decks other than just what the meta-game usues. It kinda gives an insight on the different types of stradagies the Yu-gi-oh card game has to offer.Such as Heroes, Dinosaurs, Cyber Dragons and D-Heroes.I like seeing that not just one deck can dominate all the time such as DAD or Lightsworns.Even though the cards are sometimes situational, its still fun to see what kind of combos you can pull off if you happen to get them.I run a Jaden 4th Year deck and there are tons of combos you can pull off.So dont just pick up the staples such as MST or Threating Roar.Try to find some cards that work with the theme of your deck instead of just trying to beat someone down

Thats my two cents

Generally, if you're watching to learn how the general gameplay works, I suggest picking up once Kaiba launches his new Duel Disk for the Battle City, as that's when the gameplay gets as close to real-life gameplay as it can get. It does show a fair amount of cards and what they do, good for knowing what some cards do. Note that some cards differ from their real-life counterparts.

Aside from this, it may (or may not) have a decent plot. When it does execute it well, sit back and enjoy the show. When it doesn't, take the time to snark at some ridiculous points. As a general rule, with most other anime, crazy stuff happens, try not to think too hard on how it can work logically. --Gadjiltron 07:57, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

Card Play

  • Some cards still get lots of play in todays game, like Monster Reborn, Blue-Eyes, CCV, Shrink, etc. They are mostly Kaiba's cards though, as they aren't so much of a specific for another card. Messengerofthedark 08:36, 23 June 2009 (UTC)Messengerofthedark
