I have some questions regarding the rulings and the available targets of Fairy's Hand Mirror. The effect says "Switch the opponent's Spell Card effect that designates 1 monster as a target to another correct target. ".

  • The text "opponent's Spell Card effect", instead of "opponent's Spell Card activation" or "opponent's Spell Card effect activation" indicated that Fairy's Hand Mirror can be played even when that spell card is already active and face-up on the field. I also read through the net that you can actually play this trap to switch an opponent's equip Spell Card to another target even if it was already on the field. Is this possible?
  • The text mentions a "Spell Card effect that designates 1 monster as a target". Does this mean Fairy's Hand Mirror can be used against Spell Cards that target 1 card on the deck, hand or graveyard? For example, if my opponent plays Foolish Burial can I chain my Fairy's Hand Mirror and get to chose the monster he sends to the graveyard? Can it also be played against Continuous Spell Cards when they activate their effects? (e.g. Call of the Mummy special summons 1 zombie-type monster from the hand) If you ask me, it seems broken enough to me but then again there's nothing on the card that forbids it. However, there's a line in Fairy's Hand Mirror rulings that triggered my thoughts. "Premature Burial: You cannot activate "Fairy's Hand Mirror" to make your opponent chose a different monster when they activate "Premature Burial".". Premature Burial targets a monster, so it doesn't contradict with the trap's effect. So why can't Fairy's Hand Mirror be used against its activation? Also, does the fact that Premature Burial officially can't be targeted means by default that this is also the case for all cards that target in the graveyard (e.g. Monster Reborn, Level Modulation, etc.)? If yes, shouldn't there be a simple ruling that states "Fairy's Hand Mirror can't be played on Spell Cards that target in the graveyard"? Moreover, if the card is anyway designed to work only on the field, shouldn't that be included in the text when its Errata was changed?
  • And a "wild" question. Fairy's Hand Mirror rulings state that it cannot activate against Premature Burial's activation. However, Premature Burial is an equip card that also targets its equiped monster and destroys it when the spell is destroyed. So, can I play Fairy's Hand Mirror to put Premature Burial to another (obviously stronger) monster on my opponent's control and then play Mystical Space Typhoon to practically destroy that monster?

Please include official rullings wherever possible. Where you can find none, I would also hear your personal opinions.Cuorion (talkcontribs) 14:23, February 16, 2011 (UTC)

For your 1st point, it seems logical, but unlikely, due to very few cards being able to alter card effects after they have been prior activated.

For your 2nd point, cards in deck or hand are never counted as targeted (Standard Ruling)

For your 3rd point, it depends on your 1st point being true, if it is, then I don't see why you cannot, if it is not, then you cannot.

Fair enough, regarding number 2. Deck and hand are never targeted. What's going on with monsters targeted in the graveyard though?Cuorion (talkcontribs) 21:53, February 16, 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the link, I kind of had missed the part where hand and deck are not targeted. Since this card caused many disputes among the local community and just to make sure I got it completely right, I'm going to give some examples and what I believe would be possible or not so you can confirm them.

  • 1 vs. Mage Power's activation - Allowed (Equip cards always target)
  • 2 vs. Mage Power when it's already face up on the field - Allowed (Same as above)
  • 3 vs. Monster Reborn's activation - Allowed (It targets, even in the graveyard)
  • 4 vs. Monster Reincarnation's activation - Allowed (Same as above)
  • 5 vs. Salvage's activation - Not Allowed (It targets 2 monsters)
  • 6 vs. Gateway of the Six's 2-counters effect - Allowed (It targets a monster on the field)
  • 7 vs. Ectoplasmer's effect's activation when it's already face up on the field - Not Allowed (The targeted monster is a cost)

Thanks in advance for your time.Cuorion (talkcontribs) 15:21, February 17, 2011 (UTC)

  • 1 Correct
  • 2 IDK but should based on exact card
  • 3 Correct based on reading of mirror,
  • 4 Same as above
  • 5 Correct
  • 6 same as 2
  • 7 "Tributing a monster for "Ectoplasmer" is not a cost, it's an effect, so you can't Tribute monsters unaffected by Spell Cards." though if you replace Ectoplasmer with Mystic Wok then correct.

  • 1 correct
  • 2 wrong, because at this point the monster card is not being targeted, collect power would work in this case because it switch the equiped card not switch the target of the equiped card
  • 3 *4 wrong because fairy's hand mirror can only switch target on the field, if collect power is use on premature barriel when it target in the graveyard premature barriel is destroy, if premature barriel is equiped to the monster card and you use collected power premature bariel is destroy which it will cause the equiped monster to be destroy

5,6 correct 7 you are correct, you cannot use it because it target during a resolution

when a equiped spell card as a mandatory effect or optional trigger effect that activated in the graveyard and it target a monster on the field at activation you can used fairy's hand mirror to switch the target in this case as long it is not the damage step.96.44.82.53 (talk) 02:35, February 18, 2011 (UTC)

How exactly do we know Fairy's Hand Mirror can only change targets on the field? I think -Resk is right about Ectoplasmer, I read it the other way round for a reason when I was looking for a Continuous Spell Card that targets as cost. Since it targets by an effect, you should indeed be able to chain Fairy's Hand Mirror on the effect's activation.

P.S.1: I'm trying to be as detailed as I can here, because there's a lot of different speculations found through the net about this card's valid use, like switching an opponent's Axe of Despair to your monster under attack during the Battle Step, or switching Monster Reborn to one of your dead searchers, like Sangan. Heck, some guy last week tried to force a Metallizing Parasite - Lunatite to equip on a different monster with this trap. And however crazy it sounds, it may actually be possible, as far as Union Monsters are concerned. That's why I asked for any possible official rulings that I may have missed. Anyway, keep your opinions coming. It's a bit of a relief to see I'm not the only one confused that much by this card. :P

P.S.2: Does anyone know if there's a way to actually mail these questions to a Konami TCG representative for 100% accurate answers? Thanks in advance. Cuorion (talkcontribs) 03:41, February 18, 2011 (UTC)

A.P.S.1: It doesn't work for Union Monsters as they target due to monster effect, & become spell cars after resolution.-Resk (talkcontribs) 12:42, February 18, 2011 (UTC)

I guess you're right, regarding the effect's activation. I personally wouldn't allow a Fairy's Hand Mirror redirect an Equip Spell Card while it's already equipped to a monster (for the same reason I wouldn't let a Union Monster be redirected while it's equipped on another monster), but I would let it be played against cards that target in the graveyard, like Monster Reborn. It makes me wonder though... What would a judge say if I tried to play a Fairy's Hand Mirror in any of such cases and why... Cuorion (talkcontribs) 17:36, February 18, 2011 (UTC)

Fairy's Hand Mirror cannot be chained to a Spell Card that targets a monster in the Graveyard (or the Removed Zone). It is an old card so it text is not very clear. The OCG text is clearer:
When the opponent activated a Spell Card that selects 1 monster on the field as a target, switch it to another correct target.
Also you cannot change an already Equip Spell Card to another monster. You must do it when the card was activated.
