Forum:If this card destroyed your opponent's monster by battle, it can attack once again in a row.

This one has a long topic name I know, but what exactly does this phrase mean? Does this phrase "If this card destroyed your opponent's monster by battle, it can attack once again in a row." mean that the monster can attack again and again if it keeps destroying monsters? I have looked at the Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning rulings page, and it says under the "previously official rulings" section that it only gets 1 extra attack. I'm willing to play that way, but I would really appreciate an explanation as to why that is. Based on your explanation I would assume that all other cards with that phrase have the same rulings (i.e. Ruin, Queen of Oblivion, Element Dragon, etc.). Also, do you think that future reprints of such cards would say something like (you can only gain 1 extra attack from this effect) or put "Once per turn" in front of the phrase?

"If this card destroyed your opponent's monster by battle, it can attack once again in a row." means that a monster could keep attacking all of the opponent's monsters and potentially attack 6 times in one turn (or more with something like Dandylion). HOWEVER, the card text on BLS does say "Once per turn" so that is why he only gets one more attack. IPlay4Fun (talkcontribs) 02:01, December 9, 2011 (UTC)

  • When a cards says "it can attack once again in a row", it literally means once again (so two attacks is the maximum number of attacks in total), and 'in a row' (so you cannot attack with another monster first, then attack with the monster again; but you can cancel the attack second attack, in this case, it cannot attack again that turn).
Cards which say this include: "Alien Hunter", "Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning", "Brain Golem", "Divine Dragon - Excelion", "Element Doom", "Element Dragon", "Element Magician", "Koa'ki Meiru Bergzak", "Laval Twin Slayer", "Lord British Space Fighter", "Ruin, Queen of Oblivion", "Stygian Sergeants" and "Worm Warlord".
For many of those, the card says "If this card destroys an opponent's monster by battle, it can attack once again in a row." - and as mentioned above, two attacks is the maximum number of attacks in total, so if the monster destroys the second monster by battle, it cannot attack again.

What about Tyrant Dragon then? I know the wording is different but isn't it essentially the same thing? "If the opponent controls a monster after this card attacks it can attack once again." And Tyrant Dragon can clear the field right?

Sorry but Tyrant Dragon can't. He's specifically worded so that he can't. He only gets 1 extra attack after his first, and only if the opponent still controls a monster. I appreciate your insights though. I guess it's still a little weird but Falzar is right more often than not.

Like Joe said, If there is a line along with the attack again in a row - "Once per Turn", is always the key word. It mean you can only attack twice per turn, if you hit the monster or not (future release >_>) --FredCat 02:15, December 9, 2011 (UTC)
Tyrant Dragon is once again; but does not need to be in a row. -Falzar FZ- (talk page|useful stuff) 02:16, December 9, 2011 (UTC)

To make better sense of it, you have to break the sentence down. There's the ignition condition "If this card destroyed an opponent's monster by battle" the effect "it can attack once again" and then the condition for the extra attack "in a row." It could have been worded better to avoid confusion, but Yu-Gi-Oh! has never been particularly good about that. --Joejaboy (talkcontribs) 02:22, December 9, 2011 (UTC)
