Forum:Main Page redesign

From Yugipedia
Jump to: navigation, search

I'd like to suggest a major change to the Main Page. You can see the link to the proposed version below. I'd like if people could say if they are in favour, against, neutral or if there is anything they'd like done differently.

Proposed version

There's a couple of things I need to explain about this version.

  • Where it says "Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's", "Yu-Gi-Oh! GX" and "Yu-Gi-Oh!" in blue boxes in the characters, latest episodes and latest chapters sections, those are actually tabs, not links. It's not as obvious as I'd like to be, but when you click them it will change the characters/episode/chapter below it to the series selected. (If you don't have Javascript enabled this may look different.)
  • The "Latest set" section would need to be updated manually after a new set is released/announced.
  • The "Other sets" section below the latest set links to portal pages. Ideally they'll all look like the Structure Deck one when they're done.
  • "Latest chapter" and "latest episode" will always show the last episode and chapter before and including today's date. It automatically updates itself.

Comments[edit]

Where will the ads be placed? I like the new design, but it will take a while to get used to. -bewk 19:50, April 3, 2010 (UTC)

Same as the current Main Page, a banner ad across the top and a box ad pushing the right hand column down a bit. -- Deltaneos (talk) 23:38, April 3, 2010 (UTC)

I like it, but, you'll have to add the "welcome to Yugioh wikia" "Ruby text for japanese" and the "goal of this wiki" sections for me to support the change. Thorn of RosenYubel 20:03, April 3, 2010 (UTC)

The three sections are there, but greatly reduced.
  • Welcome to Yu-Gi-Oh! Wikia!
    • The Community portal link has been removed, since that page was really created to fill people in what's going on on the wiki. It's rarely used for that anymore. People are just using for queries that are better suited to the forums. You can easily find the community portal via the sidebar anyway.
    • The 3 policy pages were also reomved.
    • This site is recommended to be viewed at a resolution of 1280x1024, with Mozilla Firefox 3.0, Internet Explorer 7 or higher. - also removed. It works fine on browsers other than the two mentioned and can be viewed on lower resolutions. It's common sense that higher resolutions and newer versions of browsers grant better results.
    • The mention of the eBay scams page is also removed. I don't see why that article needs to be given that much attention over the thousands of others.
  • Ruby text for Japanese characters: It's mentioned just below the "Welcome to Yu-Gi-Oh! Wikia!" section. It directs people to a help page dealing with the problem. There's also one for problems with displaying characters from other alphabets. I don't think it needs as big a section as it has now.
  • "Goal of this wiki" - extremely cut down to Yu-Gi-Oh! Wikia is a free repository on all aspects of the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise. The current goal of the wiki section attempts to say what the goal is, by mentioning every project done here. Just like many other sections on the current Main Page, it is trying to link to everything. It links to a lot of important stuff and a lot of unimportant stuff. One thing is certain, it's impossible to link to everything and be neat.
What I was aiming for, is we include the most important stuff and include links to portals, which go into more detail on the excluded stuff. The version I've proposed is biased. It covers what I think is imporant, which isn't necessarily going to be the same for everyone. This is why it's good to have people comment here.
Im sure I have left out some important stuff from the goal of the wiki section, but I don't think it's all needed. e.g. Category:Card Rulings is important. TCG Set Prefixes... not majorily important.
Could you say which exact parts, you'd like readded? -- Deltaneos (talk) 23:38, April 3, 2010 (UTC)
Re-added the links to the other card info. categories. -- Deltaneos (talk) 23:49, April 3, 2010 (UTC)

I'm for the redesign, but I would like to know if you planned on redesigning the News Center and the Forbidden & Limited List section. DemonGodAsura 22:41, April 3, 2010 (UTC)

Oh, oops, I completely missed the News section. Don't know how... DemonGodAsura 22:44, April 3, 2010 (UTC)
Added links to Illegal, Forbidden, Limited and Semi-Limited pages. Previous F&L lists can be access via them pages. I dont think they need direct links on the Main Page. A link to each Illegal card, like on the current Main Page, is way too much I think. -- Deltaneos (talk) 23:49, April 3, 2010 (UTC)

Do you plan on putting in the Related Wikia section? -bewk 23:54, April 3, 2010 (UTC)

Re-added. Less noticeable, but jazzed up a little. -- Deltaneos (talk) 00:23, April 4, 2010 (UTC)

Totally agreed, its better and more organizated ShredderArbok 22:21, April 4, 2010 (UTC)

I love the new design.--Akiza Izayoi 00:44, April 5, 2010 (UTC)

it looks pretty good other than to say make it happen, well... make it happen.Kazisaki 00:55, April 5, 2010 (UTC)

Could you make the "Related wikis" headline and "Other languages Yu-Gi-Oh! wikis" headline appear the same as the rest of the other titles on the home page (like "Welcome to Yu-Gi-Oh! Wikia!" and "Characters"), and <center> the links to the other language Wikis. Also, could you take "Yu-Gi-Oh! wikis" out of the "Other laguages Yu-Gi-Oh! wikis" - it sounds strange? I think those changes would make it look alot better. -bewk 01:05, April 5, 2010 (UTC)

Okay now? -- Deltaneos (talk) 01:13, April 5, 2010 (UTC)
Maybe you could center the "Other Sets" links. Otherwise, it's perfect. -bewk 02:59, April 5, 2010 (UTC)

Okay, the Main Page is now changed to this version. -- Deltaneos (talk) 16:17, April 5, 2010 (UTC)

Related Wikias[edit]

Hi Del, <3 the new design, but I noticed that u removed the link to My Yugioh Deck Wikia. Although barely visible, this wikia has been a major success. I constantly receive messages asking me to rate and comment on decks. Could you please repost this link? Thanks. Also, I need to speak with you about adding a similar format to mYDW. Thanks! NitroAssassin {talk} 01:41, April 6, 2010 (UTC)

DemonGodAsura requested it on irc. I pinged you while we were discussing it, to ask if you minded if we removed it, but you must have been away at the time. I've re-added it now. Maybe the three of us can discuss it some time when we are all on irc? -- Deltaneos (talk) 04:28, April 6, 2010 (UTC)

Colors/somethings screwed-up[edit]

First of all, great job with the redesign. The layout looks amazing, and it should prove to be really helpful for everybody. The only issue I have at this moment is that the colors on the main page clash. I think the blue color looks fine, but the maroon header/yellow text don't match the blue header/white text. I suggest making it all blue/white or use some other set of matching colors. --Sub (Talk | Contribs) 17:44, April 10, 2010 (UTC)

For some reason I can't get the side links to expand, and while they link places, I can't access anything else except through search, and contributions pages. including the forums. (and I liked being able to just click "Forums" to get here, too) Community just links somewhere strange, a page I've never seen before, and seems to have very little to do with the community of users here.

I like the color blue, but I don't think it matches the wikia, or Yugioh, I like the old black, red, and yellow/gold colors better, which matched the Sennen Puzzle picture on the sidebar. (though a better layout for the colors would not have been bad.) Thorn of RosenYubel 00:11, April 11, 2010 (UTC)

Made it all maroon/yellow since it matches the skin and logo. -- Deltaneos (talk) 01:16, April 11, 2010 (UTC)
Ug, Wikia has killed the monaco-brick theme, which we were using, which is why people are probably seeing a blue and white (monaco-sapphire) theme instead. I'm not sure if the messed-up sidebar is related. Fixing the colours shouldn't be too much of a problem. I'll see what I can do about the sidebar too. -- Deltaneos (talk) 01:27, April 11, 2010 (UTC)
The skin colour should be back to normal now. Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome users might need to press Ctrl + F5 to show the most recent version. Opera users may clear their caches through Tools→Preferences. Konqueror and Safari users can just click the Reload button. -- Deltaneos (talk) 01:41, April 11, 2010 (UTC)
I don't think it's because of anything I'm after doing, but the sidebar is back to normal now. -- Deltaneos (talk) 01:46, April 11, 2010 (UTC)
yay, the colors are right and the sidebar works again. Thanks, whether you did anything or not. Thorn of RosenYubel 13:16, April 11, 2010 (UTC)

Changes to latest set[edit]

The latest set section is now automatic-ish. To update it, create a page like this one. The Main Page should then change to the most recent one and push the old one onto an archive. You may need to refresh the page if you don't see the change immediately. -- Deltaneos (talk) 13:48, April 17, 2010 (UTC)
