How to understand when a card needs to be on the field for her effect to resolve? Blue-Eyes Shining Girl 13:42, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

  • Could you be anymore vague? I'm not completely confounded yet. Danny Lilithborne 06:40, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

Could you be anymore sarcastic? She was wondering how you can tell which monsters need to be on the field when their effects resolve and which ones don't. For example, Chaos Sorcerer doesn't need to be on the field for the selected monster to be removed from play, but Royal Knight needs to be on the field for you to gain life points. 75.185.178.105 02:25, 6 February 2009 (UTC)

  • It's a good question, actually. A general rule of thumb is that effects that involve battle require the card to be on the field, otherwise no. But don't quote me on that. Danny Lilithborne 02:45, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
In general, cards do not need to remain face-up on the field to resolve their effects. The exception is Continuous/Equip/Field Spell/Trap cards - these always need to remain face-up on the field for their effects to resolve/be applied.
Monsters with Continuous Effects need to remain face-up for the Continuous Effect to remain.
Monsters need to be in the proper place for their effects to activate, but once the effect activates, the monster doesn't need to remain there.
For example, all "When this card destroys a monster by battle and sends it to the Graveyard" effects require the monster to remain face-up on the field for its effect to activate, but once the effect activates, the monster doesn't need to remain face-up on the field.
Example: "Goyo Guardian" needs to be face-up on the field when the monster is sent to the Graveyard. If "Goyo Guardian" is not face-up on the field at this time (eg, he was destroyed by battle, or by a Flip Effect, etc), then his effect does not activate. However, if "Michizure" is Chained to the effect of "Goyo Guardian", then "Michizure" destroys "Goyo Guardian" first, then "Goyo Guardian"'s effect resolves properly (because it was activated correctly).
Also, if a monster does something to itself, it generally needs to remain on the field. For example, "Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress" and "Light and Darkness Dragon" need to remain on the field.
As always, there are exceptions to these. MANY exceptions. Be sure to check a card's Rulings if you have a question about a specific card.
