Forum:Sea Serpent Deck

I think it can be safely said that Raging Battle was the set designed to turn the meta upside-down. For starters, it introduced a whole freakin' anti-meta archetype. It includes some cards so obviously designed to combat specific decks, it's not even funny. And it includes long-sought support for two weird deck types; Ojamas, and... you can probably guess the next one.

If there's one type that got left behind, it's Sea Serpents. As time's gone by, they've been outstripped by their "little" cousins, the Fish; Reptiles now have a remarkable 3 archetypes; even Plants have beaten them. Finally, we've got some new ideas in the form of Raging Battle, and they show a 180 shift in Sea Serpent ideas. Previously, Sea Serpents were all about getting freakin' huge monsters to the field, like Ocean Dragon Lord - Neo-Daedalus - but there was no real way specific to Sea Serpents to make that happen. And all they had was Umi and whatever happened to support WATER monsters. Now, though, it seems to be a low-level beatdown deck. Of course, there's only 4 new Sea Serpents, but that's good enough for me.

Here it is. This deck has a lot of tricks, but the main two monsters to bring out are Mermaid Archer (equipped) and Sea Dragon Lord Gishilnodon. The main method of doing this is Deep Sea Diva, which can get both with a simple summon. But Diva can also bring out other synchros besides Gishilnodon, and it does a good job of it too.

Here's the breakdown. There's three each of Deep Sea Diva, Mermaid Archer, and Spined Gillman as the primary Serpents. There's also Mother Grizzly to search out most of the deck - Sangan serves the same purpose. Atlantean Pikeman comes in because it's a level 2 Sea Serpent with high ATK. Lunatite, having 1000 ATK, is easily searched by Grizzly and grants any of my monsters spell immunity from my opponent, a good thing. Marauding Captain and Junk Synchron also help with the Synchro Summons and getting food for Mermaid Archer.

For spells, I've got lots of ATK modifiers. Mage Power and Umiiruka serve to boost my monsters; Shrink and Burden of the Mighty weaken those of my opponent. Reinforcement searches out Marauding Captain and Junk Synchron, while Terraforming gets Umiiruka. Finally, Magical Mallet serves as the lone draw spell.

The traps are pretty specific. Shift takes advantage of the fact that I'll probably have more than one monster on the field at a time, and it can make my opponent unintentionally trigger the Gishilnodon Gishilnodon Smackdown. Divine Wrath negates effects and Dark Bribe negates spells and traps.

Finally, the extra deck. I've got 3 Gishilnodon, which can basically only be summoned with the help of Diva. Brionac also goes in for great power. Armory Arm can be summoned as easily as Diva summoning Pikeman. Magical Android and Junk Warrior are also level 5 monsters, which are easiest for this deck to summon; Junk Warrior obviously is a good choice for summoning while I've got something like Atlantean Pikeman on the field with Umiiruka in play, thus buffing it to 4000 ATK. Finally, I put in 2 more level 6 synchros; Goyo Guardian and Iron Chain Dragon.

Tell me what you think of this concept deck. Runer5h 22:39, 21 May 2009 (UTC)Runer5h

  • A straightforward attack-manipulating deck to honor Sea Serpents. I like it! Perhaps Spiritual Water Art - Aoi and/or Salvage may interest you. Don't forget your Monster Reborn and MST. ::Chris427 23:51, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
I can already summon Sea Serpents from the grave with Junk Synchron, so Salvage might not be necessary. But Aoi is a good idea. Runer5h 00:01, 22 May 2009 (UTC)Runer5h
  • Good concept but i am not sure about the speed of the deck. You require a number of monsters to be in the grave so you might be able to survive too long, especially against blackwing decks. Try to add draw power like reckless greed and try to include swarming cards that dont use monsters in the graveyard. Maruading captain was agood idea because with a level 2 monster in the grave you can summon junk synchron and bring back Deep sea diva to synchro then you could use Junk Synchron with the level 5 synchro to summon a level 8 synchro like Stardust or Red dragon archfiend. You can also use a descending lost star to bring back your Sea lord Dragon and have umiiruka to go for a possible OTK. Use foolish burial to get cards in your grave if you need them there. Try out the Otk strategy. You have the cards. Just put in Stardust, Red dragon archfeind, etc. ALso use reenforcement of the army to get maruading captain and foolish burial to put deep sea diva in the grave and try to OTK. You might not if it's early in the game but you'll still take out a chunk of your opponents life points. And then you can finish him off with your original beatdown strategy. If it is late in the game clear his spell/traps. It is ok if he still has monsters cause your monsters will be strong enough to take them out along with a good chunk of your opponents lifepoints. But try to bring down his monster count first or control it with bottomless trap hole and fissure (ideally lightning vortex to clear them all). Dont worry about face-up Spells and traps that your opponent might have out that dont cause you problems. Try to get rid of the face downs if you can though.I'll write a possible deck list. I wont go too far off your original recipe so dont woory too much about acquiring new cards.

The total is 41 cards (20monsters/21spells,traps). I took away some cards because in order to OTK you have to have more destruction and feild controlling cards against your opponent so thats pretty much all that has changed. I took away burden of the mighty because of this and also because between spined gillman and umiiruka and terraforming to get it, you will add enough power to your Sea serpents and moderately fast as well. Try call of the haunted as well. It will bring back any monster you need since monster reborn was banned but i suggest you use it when you need to use the monster immediately because if the trap card goes so does the monster. Also feel free to take your time setting up your OTK because you need 1 card in the graveyard(deep sea diva) 2 on the feild(umiiruka, descending lost star) and 2-3 in your hand(maruading captain plus lightning vortex(ideally) and heavy storm (ideally)) plus 1 in your deck(Junk Synchron) but your beatdown strategy is enought to be able to stall without taking a lot of damage. Feel free to finish off your opponent with whichever strategy you can put in play first (beatdown or OTK). The Otk can also put your opponent away before he can do what he needs to to win so include the OTK strategy to have a trump card in case beatdown doesnt work. The OTK already utilizes the cards already in your deck so it wouldnt be a stretch to keep both strategies in there. Hope this helps. Please COMMENT!

OK... thanks for the input. However, I fail to see an OTK, so if you could explain I'd be happy. In any event, this deck needs more speed than it currently has at the moment, so I'll be putting in 3 copies of SOVR's Moray of Greed and removing the 2 Magical Mallets. Also, I've added more of an extra deck. Runer5h 00:11, 31 August 2009 (UTC)Runer5h
