A '''Synchro Summon''' ({{Ruby|Ｓ|シンクロ}}{{Ruby|召|しょう}}{{Ruby|喚|かん}} ''Shinkuro Shōkan'', シンクロ{{Ruby|召|しょう}}{{Ruby|喚|かん}} in [[card text]] before ''[[Duelist Alliance]]'') is the standard method for [[Special Summon]]ing a [[Synchro Monster]] from the [[Extra Deck]]. It involves using a [[Tuner monster]] and one or more non-Tuner monsters as [[Synchro Material]]s, whose total Levels equal the Level of the Synchro Monster.

Synchro Summoning is thematically related to synchronization. In the anime, the non-Tuner monsters are said to be "tuned" with the Tuner monster.

== Mechanics ==
During their [[Main Phase]], the [[turn player]] can Synchro Summon a [[Synchro Monster]] from face-down in their [[Extra Deck]] by [[send]]ing two or more [[face-up]] monsters from their field to the [[Graveyard]] as [[Synchro Material]]s, including at least 1 [[Tuner monster]], whose combined [[Level]]s exactly equal the Synchro Monster's Level and meet the requirements listed for its [[Synchro Material]]s. After that, the player [[Special Summon]]s the Synchro Monster from the [[Extra Deck]] [[face-up]] to an unoccupied [[Main Monster Zone|Main]] or [[Extra Monster Zone]].

Even if all appropriate Monster Zones are occupied, a Synchro Monster can still be Synchro Summoned as long as at least one of the Synchro Materials used is in one of these zones, so that there is an available zone when the Synchro Monster is Summoned.

Monsters that do not have Levels, such as [[Xyz Monster]]s and [[Link Monster]]s, cannot be used as Synchro Materials. [[Token Monster]]s and [[Trap Monster]]s can be used as Synchro Materials.

Synchro Materials are sent to the Graveyard by default, but the Synchro Summon is still successful even if the materials are moved to some other location instead. For example, it is still possible to perform a Synchro Summon while "[[Macro Cosmos]]" is active or using [[Pendulum Monster]]s as materials, in which case the materials will be [[banish]]ed or placed face-up in the Extra Deck, respectively.

A Synchro Summon is a type of [[Special Summon#Built-in Special Summon|built-in Special Summon]], so it can be [[negate]]d by cards like "[[Solemn Warning]]" and "[[Thunder King Rai-Oh]]". Even if a Synchro Summon is negated, the Synchro Materials do not return to the field.

===Synchro Summoning with multiple Tuners===
While most Synchro Monsters require exactly 1 [[Tuner]] to be Synchro Summoned, some Synchro Monsters can use or require multiple Tuner monsters as Synchro Material. For example, "[[Red Nova Dragon]]" requires two Tuners for its Synchro Summon, while [[Red Supernova Dragon]] requires three. "[[Crystron Quariongandrax]]" requires two or more Tuners, but exactly one non-Tuner monster. "[[XX-Saber Gottoms]]" must be Synchro Summoned using a Tuner and [[EARTH]] monsters, but it does not specify that the EARTH monsters must be non-Tuners; it can thus be Synchro Summoned using only Tuner monsters.

Within official media, Synchro Summoning a monster using two Tuners is referred to as [[Double Tuning]], while Synchro Summoning using three Tuners is referred to as [[Triple Tuning]].

===Specifically-named Synchro Materials===
Some Synchro Monsters specifically name particular monsters that they require as Synchro Material (e.g. "[[Majestic Star Dragon]]", "[[Revived King Ha Des]]"). While there is no specific requirement that any specifically named Synchro Material be a Tuner or not, a Synchro Summon requires that at least one of the Synchro Materials is a Tuner monster. If the only listed Synchro Materials are specifically named monsters and explicit non-Tuner monsters, this means that at least one of the specifically named monsters must be a Tuner monster.

For example, "Majestic Star Dragon" lists the Synchro Materials "''"Majestic Dragon" + "Stardust Dragon" + 1 non-Tuner monster''". "[[Majestic Dragon]]" is a Tuner monster and "[[Stardust Dragon]]" is a non-Tuner monster.
* If a Tuner monster has its name changed to "Stardust Dragon" (e.g. "[[Scanner]]" affected by "[[Uni-Song Tuning]]"), "Majestic Star Dragon" can be Synchro Summoned using both "Majestic Dragon" and the monster named "Stardust Dragon" as Tuners.
* If a non-Tuner monster has its name changed to "Majestic Dragon" (e.g. "[[Scanner]]"), normally the Synchro Summon cannot be performed as there would not be any Tuner monsters among the Synchro Materials.
* If a Tuner monster has its name changed to "Stardust Dragon" and a non-Tuner monster has its name changed to "Majestic Dragon", a Synchro Summon can be performed using the monster named "Stardust Dragon" as a Tuner monster and the monster named "Majestic Dragon" as a non-Tuner monster.

===Synchro Summoning with a card effect===

While Synchro Summoning is a type of [[Special Summon#Built-in Special Summon|built-in Special Summon]], so is performed without the use of any card effect, there are some card effects that can perform Synchro Summons immediately after their resolution.

For example, "[[Urgent Tuning]]" and "[[Formula Synchron]]" have effects that can perform a Synchro Summon.

===Interactions with effects===
* "[[Synchro Material (card)|Synchro Material]]" allows the player to use their opponent's monsters as Synchro Material.
* Some cards (such as "[[T.G. Cyber Magician]]") have effects that allow [[Uses cards from hand as Synchro Material|cards in the hand]] to be used as Synchro Materials.
* [[Synchro Substitute Monster]]s can substitute one of the required materials listed on a Synchro Monster. All Synchro Substitute Monsters specify that they can be used in place of a Synchro Material of a particular [[archetype]].
* Some card effects can [[Treats monsters as Tuner monsters|treat non-Tuner monsters]] as Tuner monsters or [[Treats itself as a non-Tuner monster|treat Tuner monsters]] as non-Tuner monsters for Synchro Summoning.

===Treating a Special Summon as a Synchro Summon===

Some card effects can Special Summon a Synchro Monster, treating that Special Summon as a Synchro Summon. This type of Special Summon is not a Synchro Summon despite being treated as one, so it does not necessarily follow any mechanics of a Synchro Summon.

===Synchro Monsters that cannot be Synchro Summoned===
A small number of Synchro Monsters [[cannot be Synchro Summoned]], but instead must be Special Summoned with requirements referenced from its printed [[Level]]. This summon is not treated as a Synchro Summon; there are no listed Synchro Materials, and the materials used for this Special Summon are not Synchro Materials. In both cases, they correspond to or are based off on [[Dark Synchro Summon]].

The two [[Dark Synchro Monster|Dark Synchro]] Monsters found in the manga, [[Ultimaya Tzolkin]] and [[Phantasmal Lord Ultimitl Bishbaalkin]], retained this Summoning requirement; these are also the only [[Level 0]] Monsters in the game. Additionally, they are also the only Monsters with a [[Level condition]] as their original Level. "Ursarctic" Synchro Monsters also require the differences of the Levels of their "Synchro Materials" to Special Summon; giving rise to Level 1 Synchro Monsters otherwise impossible due to the fact Synchro Monsters require two or more Materials to summon.

In ''[[Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's]]'', many characters in the Japanese version of the anime recite a [[Summon chant]] when Synchro Summoning, often unique to them and each of their Synchro Monsters. Before the chants, the Duelist announces the monsters being used, starting with the Levels and names of all non-Tuner monsters, from the lowest to the highest Level, then the Level and name of the Tuner monster. In the English dub, this is reversed; the Tuner monster's name is said first and the non-Tuner monsters' names are said last. 

During a Synchro Summon, the Tuner monster transforms into a number of green rings which corresponds to its Level. These rings then "scan" the non-tuner monsters, which first change into a glowing yellow "outline" of themselves before turning into a number of stars which correspond to their Levels. A beam of light then envelops the stars, passing through the rings, and the Synchro Monster appears thereafter. In some special versions of Synchro Summons, the rings are a different color or are completely redesigned, for example, when "[[Shooting Quasar Dragon]]" is Limit Over Accel Synchro Summoned, the rings are gold instead of green, and when "[[Red Nova Dragon]]" is Synchro Summoned, the Tuner monsters transform into rings of fire, which form a sphere around the non-Tuner monster. Additionally, when "[[Malefic Paradox Dragon]]" is Synchro Summoned, the Synchro Rings are black instead of green, and the non-Tuner monsters become a purple outline, and a cyclone of darkness envelops the stars instead of a beam of light. Also, the characters may have personalized backgrounds and other graphics for Synchro Summons (most noticeably [[Bruno|Vizor]]).

Starting with [[Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's - Episode 065|episode 65]] and carried into the second season, when the non-Tuner(s) turn into stars, the arithmetic addition of the total Levels involved in the Synchro Summon is briefly shown on the bottom of the screen.

====''Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V''====
In ''[[Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V]]'', Synchro Summoning appears to be more advanced than it was in ''Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's'' as can be seen by the Synchro Rings are surrounded by multiple small rotating rectangles, which gives them a more futuristic look, implying that in the future the actual Synchro Summoning method has evolved. Like in 5D's, when [[Jack Atlas (ARC-V)|Jack Atlas]] performs a Double Tuning, the two Tuners become rings of fire rather than Synchro rings.  

A Synchro Summon performed using monsters that have been Pendulum Summoned is referred to as a "Pendulum-Synchro".

In ''[[Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS]]'', the Synchro Summon is changed drastically. Green thunder strikes behind the Duelist, and then the Synchro Materials dissolve into particles, and each one reforms into rings of light equal to their Level. The Tuner monster transforms into a aquamarine ring with an inner layer patterned with lines, while the non-Tuner monsters transform into lines of the [[wikipedia:Complementary colors|color that opposes]] their [[Attribute]] (for example, [[LIGHT]] monsters turn into purple rings, while [[DARK]] monsters turn into yellow rings) broken up by white circles (which resemble Levels on Monster Cards) or breaks in the line that total [[Level 12 Monster Cards|twelve]]. The monster's Level is numbered in a small status screen that connects the rings. The rings then glow blue and merge into one resembling that of the Tuner monster's ring, which flickers in a manner akin to a frequency wave and then bursts into particles, but then reforms surrounded by fifteen green rectangles evocative of those seen in the rings of the ''ARC-V'' Synchro Summon. The blue ring then separates into a number equal to the Level of the Synchro Monster in a column, and a blue display reading "LEVEL" appears, slotting in from the back of the rings and bearing the Levels of the Synchro Materials on it, which quickly meld into the Synchro Monster's Level with a red flash. The view then flashes down the rings as a light glows in a similar manner to past Synchro Summons, and the Synchro Monster appears, forming out of a blue outline.
