I have begun work on this, more work tomorrow. More work for the Bakura article tomorrow aswell. -Arctic Wolf

Yami Bakura is both Thief King Bakura and Zorc Necrophades[edit]

Although I made a similar argument about the identity of Yami Bakura in the Bandit King Bakura article, I figured I should make a similar argument in this article too.

The identity of Yami Bakura is a confusing issue because many people believe that he's the spirit of Thief King Bakura, while others, including the editors of this article, believe he's just the partial spirit of Zorc Necrophades, and while others believe he's some sort of fusion of the two. This is justified in the fact that both the anime and manga have you believe that he's initially the spirit of some sort of thief or tomb robber, only to say that he's a part of Zorc near the end. However, based on the information I gathered, I believe that in both the anime and manga, Yami Bakura is an entity comprised of both a portion of Zorc's soul and Thief King Bakura's soul due to the fact that the manga directly states Thief King Bakura's soul is in the Millennium Ring, official Yu-Gi-Oh! sources state Bandit King Bakura was Yami Bakura in the past, and that Yami Bakura has Bandit King Bakura's memories that Zorc could not have possibly known himself.

To begin, the manga directly states that Thief King Bakura's soul exists within the Millennium Ring, along with a shard of Zorc's soul. If Thief King Bakura's soul exists in the Millennium Ring and the evil spirit of the Millennium Ring identifies as a single being, then one can rationalize that the entity known as Dark Bakura is a combination of both spirits. For example, in the manga, in Millennium World Duel 46: Fight in the Holy Tomb, when Dark Bakura approaches the gang in the tomb, Dark Bakura mentions that the "thief's soul" is in his Millennium Ring and could sense the location of the pharaoh's lost name, confirming that Thief King Bakura has undoubtedly been sealed in the Millennium Ring. This would mean that the entity known as Dark Bakura is not wholly Zorc Necrophades, but also Thief King Bakura as well. In addition, the manga and even the anime has Dark Bakura making remarks to hint that he might be comprised of a shard of Zorc's soul and Thief King Bakura's soul. For example, in the manga, in "Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel 39: Choose Wisely!," Dark Bakura offers Ryou Bakura help in choosing the correct door to escape the labyrinth, saying, "It would be easy for a thief like me," and in the anime, said, "I am a thief and stealer of souls" who did terrible things in his quest to obtain the Millennium Items. Although identifying as a thief proves little, it's still more than likely that having Thief King Bakura's soul sealed in the Millennium Ring could also result in Dark Bakura identifying as a thief since Zorc is not known for stealing things in labyrinths, and Thief King Bakura was shown to have done "terrible things" to obtain the Millennium Items to release Zorc to the mortal world. Thus, Dark Bakura is an entity undoubtedly comprised of a shard of Zorc Necrophades and Thief King Bakura's entire soul.

Furthermore, official Yu-Gi-Oh! sources also claim that Thief King Bakura was Yami Bakura in the past. Official Yu-Gi-Oh! sources themselves cannot be wrong and are much more reliable sources than anything fan made regarding Yu-Gi-Oh! For example, in the official Yu-Gi-Oh! website, Bandit King Bakura's character biography reads, "Yami Bakura’s hatred for the Pharaoh stemmed back to ancient Egypt, when he was the King of the Bandits," directly stating that Yami Bakura was indeed Bandit King Bakura in the past, with evidence of this being found here on the official website. Because the website directly states that Yami Bakura was Bandit King Bakura in the past, one should conclude that Yami Bakura is Bandit King Bakura, as well as Zorc Necrophades. Moreover, other characters directly state that the evil spirit of the Millennium Ring is Bandit King Bakura in the anime. To exemplify, in the anime, in the episode of the anime where the pharaoh first enters the Millennium World, Shadi approaches the gang and informs that his earthy body was destroyed by an ancient tomb robber named Bakura, to which the scene cut to a flashback showing the spirit of the Millennium Ring exiting the Millennium Ring and entering the stone tablet with Yami Yugi. If Yami Bakura had nothing to do with Bandit King Bakura, then Shadi would have never referred to the spirit of the Millennium Ring as a "tomb robber named Bakura." Therefore, official sources and even characters in the show prove that Bandit King Bakura is associated with the entity known as Yami Bakura more than anything.

Finally, another aspect to consider is Yami Bakura's memories of the past. In the anime and manga, Yami Bakura seems to share Thief King Bakura's memories, as well as Zorc's memories. For instance, in the anime, when Yami Bakura first entered Bandit King Bakura's body, Yami Bakura remembered himself as "King of Thieves" and remembered the day when the Pharaoh first acquired the throne to Egypt, something that Zorc Necrophades otherwise could not have remembered at the time because he wasn't yet released at the time. If Yami Bakura was entirely Zorc, Zorc would likely only remember instances of his past when he was released into the mortal world, not well before it. Additionally, some might argue that Yami Bakura sharing Bandit King Bakura's memories could be the result of Zorc possessing Bandit King Bakura the whole time. For example, this article suggests that Zorc was possibly possessing Bandit King Bakura when he murdered Shadi in the past, to which Zorc could have memories of doing this through Bandit King Bakura. However, no evidence exists that Zorc ever possessed Bandit King Bakura in the past, which isn't likely anyway considering that Zorc was never released in the mortal world to possess anyone, as Thief King Bakura summoned Zorc in the past all on his own. Thus, reading through the manga and watching the anime carefully and logically analyzing Yami Bakura's memories through Bandit King Bakura should be enough to conclude that Yami Bakura is also Thief King Bakura.

In closing, I strongly believe because the manga directly states Thief King Bakura's soul is in the Millennium Ring, official Yu-Gi-Oh! sources state Bandit King Bakura was Yami Bakura in the past, and that Yami Bakura has Bandit King Bakura's memories that Zorc could not have possibly known himself, Yami Bakura is both Zorc and Bandit King Bakura. I believe a good way to write Yami Bakura's character biography is to explain that he is an entity comprised of Thief King Bakura, along with a shard of Zorc, but personally identifies as Zorc, similar to how Aknadin also identified as Zorc when infused with a portion of Zorc's spirit to become The Great Shadow Magus. I believe this would be a more accurate way to describe exactly who Yami Bakura is and clear up a lot of confusion about his identity. I want to change the contents of this article to reflect my arguments, but I honestly don't know how to change it, as I am no wiki editing expert, and I need to know if I am wrong about anything before I even begin, so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about something.

I know some more points in the manga and anime that supports this:

Manga:

  • When the villagers were talking about Thief King Bakura's survival, Dark Bakura commented that "He [Dark Bakura] was famous"
  • It CAN'T be a coincidence that Thief King Bakura has the exact same personality as Dark Bakura; even Dark Yugi mused that the Thief King was Dark Bakura in the past.

Anime:

  • Why would Yami Bakura have his deck based on Bandit King Bakura's ka, Diabound. If he had absolutely no connection to Bandit King Bakura other than being a vessel, why would he have his deck focusing on Diabound's card counterpart?

Scheepybird (talkcontribs) 19:56, October 2, 2015 (UTC)

Yami Bakura didn't have his memories either, despite what he told Yugi, but he knew that there was a thief's soul sealed in the Ring. He probably assumed that he was the Bandit King. And he had the Deck focused on Diabound so that he could give it an edge in the Shadow Game by powering it up with Blue-Eyes White Dragon, remember? That was the whole point of him Dueling Kaiba. Sanokal K-T (talkcontribs) 20:42, October 2, 2015 (UTC)

Manga:

He has faint memories. He said in one chapter that his "sleeping memories are awakening", when watching the city.

Anime:

He still DID have Diabound. Scheepybird (talkcontribs) 21:28, October 2, 2015 (UTC)

Don't play the fool by pulling wordplay on me, and he never said those were the Bandit King's.
And what you you mean by that last bit? Sanokal K-T (talkcontribs) 01:52, October 3, 2015 (UTC)

What I meant is that he had the card counterpart of the ka of the Thief King; if he had nothing to do with the Thief King, then why would he have the card counterpart of his ka.

If he couldn't remember anything, then how does he know he was Zorc, and in the anime he said that he remembered "this day in the past quite clearly" upon possessing the Thief King, and in the manga, he knew that the Thief King would do "the second act of the palace tragedy" right before he even did it. Scheepybird (talkcontribs) 20:02, October 3, 2015 (UTC)

Because he was trying to power up Diabound in order to ensure that he could keep the Game on course, though the addition of that fact was anime garbage designed to give Kaiba a reason to come to Egypt.
That's a Dub-induced plot-hole. As they (Yami Yugi and Yami Bakura) spent time in the Memory World, they slowly recovered their memories. Something that may need to be mentioned is that fact that while a fragment of Zorc's soul was sealed into the Ring, Zorc's memories were actually sealed in the Millennium Puzzle; and this is directly stated by Bakura. Sanokal K-T (talkcontribs) 20:06, October 3, 2015 (UTC)

But one thing that confuses me is that Dark Bakura still remebered Shadi/Hasan, despite losing his memories, in the Battle City and Duelist Kingdom arc in the manga. Scheepybird (talkcontribs) 20:15, October 3, 2015 (UTC)

That confuses everyone: it was never explained. That being said, it's likely that Dark Bakura might possibly remember Shadi from when Shadi still had the Ring. Sanokal K-T (talkcontribs) 20:20, October 3, 2015 (UTC)
This is a point of confusion that was recently clarified, it was Dark Bakura who killed Shadi and not Thief King Bakura. The notion that Thief King Bakura killed him was based on what Shadi said in the dub, whereas in the original he only said that "Bakura" killed him years ago. He was referring to present-day Bakura, as confirmed in the recent movie. VillainousTroper (talkcontribs) 2:44, August 26, 2016 (UTC)

One more question: If ZORC'S memories were gone, then what happened to the Bandit King's? Scheepybird (talkcontribs) 21:12, October 18, 2015 (UTC)

Although it's a given by now that Dark Bakura is an entity made from both Thief King Bakura and Zorc's souls combined, there are some other points that showed this as well:

Manga:

  • His first arc has him describe himself as a thief. He also plays a character in the RPG that resembles Bakura, who deceives the main characters into thinking he's good but then reveals himself to be evil and shows his true form as a monster named "Dark Master Zorc".
  • Thief King Bakura's death is never shown, he is instead turned to sand and taken out of the game because he fulfilled his purpose and this is the point where all memory of him stops. Before this happens, his last thoughts are a crazed mantra of his mission: "Kill the Pharaoh, steal all the Millennium Items and summon the dark power..." Before he turns to sand, he is last seen trying to put the Millennium Ring inside the stone tablet. It would make sense that at this point, his soul was sealed inside it and when it was awoken as Dark Bakura years later, his obsessive thoughts about his mission remained in his memory and is why he started on it once again.
  • The Japanese version of the following chapter shows Dark Yugi and Dark Bakura at the RPG game table with narrative text reading "Pharaoh vs. Bandit King! The Ultimate Shadow RPG!" Remember, this is well after the scene where Dark Bakura declared himself to be Zorc. Add to this that Akhenaden's corrupted spirit is also referred to as Zorc multiple times, and we learn that he became corrupted by Zorc infusing him with a piece of his soul (Dark Bakura even says of Akhenaden: "His soul is one with Zorc's!"), and it becomes obvious that Dark Bakura is indeed the soul of Thief King Bakura infused with a piece of Zorc's soul, sealed inside the Millennium Ring. The soul of Zorc (and by extension Akhenaden) were sealed inside the Millennium Puzzle. The Shadow RPG has re-awoken Akhenaden's soul, and both he and Dark Bakura aim to re-awaken Zorc's full soul and revive him in the modern world.

Anime:

  • Thief King Bakura is revived in the RPG even after being turned to sand because, as he says, the game cannot be completed without him. His role turns out to be sacrificing himself to grant Zorc a physical form. He does this by transforming into pink light that goes inside the Millennium Stone, then shoots out and into the earth, which Zorc emerges from. It seems that this is Thief King Bakura merging his own soul with Zorc, and in the anime, a part of Zorc resided in the Millennium Ring from its creation. This would be why Dark Bakura is more like Thief King Bakura for most of the series, and why as his memories fully awaken through the Shadow RPG, he starts to look and act more demonic, like Zorc.
  • Dark Bakura inside of Thief King Bakura tells Akhenaden at one point that the massacre of Kul Elna doesn't really matter to him anymore, because it "has nothing to do with who I am now". This is pretty much a direct confirmation that he did indeed used to be Thief King Bakura, but he isn't anymore, as he is now Zorc. VillainousTroper (talkcontribs) 10:20, August 26, 2016 (UTC)
