A zone (Japanese: ゾーン zōn) is any tile for a card(s) on a playmat. Each side features 16 zones, divided into 5 columns of 2 zones each with 2 end columns with 3 zones each.

The top left zone is the Field Zone, where the player's Field Spell Cards are played. The bottom zone is the Extra Deck Zone (formerly the Fusion Deck Zone), where the player's Extra Deck is placed.
+
From left to right, the first zone of the top row is the Field Card Zone, where Field Spell Cards may be played. This is followed by five Monster Card Zones, where Monster Cards may be played, and lastly by the Graveyard Zone, where the player's Graveyard is kept.

The top right zone is the Graveyard Zone, where the player's Graveyard is placed. The bottom is the Deck Zone, where the player's Main Deck is placed.
+
The bottom row, from left to right, features the Extra Deck Zone (formerly known as the Fusion Deck Zone), where the player's Extra Deck is placed, followed by five Spell & Trap Card Zones for Spell and Trap Cards, and the Deck Zone, where the player's Main Deck is placed.

The upper row of five central zones are Main Monster Zones, where Monster Cards are played; the lower row of five central zones are Spell & Trap Zones, where Spell and Trap Cards are played. The leftmost and rightmost is also used as the Pendulum Zones.
+
In addition to these, the Banished Zone (formerly known as the Removed from Play Zone) is a zone not on the field where banished cards are placed.

Between each player's field on the 2nd and 4th columns, are the 2 Extra Monster Zones. These Zones are exclusively used for playing monster from the Extra Deck.
+
Each vertical line of four zones stretching from one player's Spell & Trap Card Zone to their opponent's constitutes a column; there are five columns on the field.

The banished cards are not placed in any particular zone, so the location of banished cards does not appear on the playmat. However, in video games (where this location is usually called the "Removed from Play Zone" or the "Banished Zone", a term not used in the TCG/OCG), it is typically located to the right of the Graveyard Zone.
+
A new set of zones specifically destined for Pendulum Summoning are set to debut in Starter Deck 2014, the Pendulum Zones. These zones are located in between the Extra Deck and Field Card Zones (Left/Blue) and the Graveyard and Deck Zones (Right/Red).

Each vertical line of zones stretching from one player's Spell & Trap Zone to their opponent's constitutes a column; there are five columns on the field.

Pendulum Zones
Starting with Master Rule 3, there are two Pendulum Zones on each player's field. Pendulum Monsters can be played as Spell Cards in the Pendulum Zones.

During Master Rule 3, the Pendulum Zones are new zones located on the far left and right sides of the game mat. The blue Pendulum Zone is located between the Extra Deck and Field Zones, and the red Pendulum Zone is located between the Deck and Graveyard Zones.

Starting in New Master Rule, the Pendulum Zones are shared with the leftmost and rightmost Spell & Trap Zones. These zones normally function as Spell & Trap Zones, but function as Pendulum Zones while a Pendulum Monster is in them.

Extra Monster Zones
Starting in New Master Rule, the field includes two Extra Monster Zones, between the two sides of the field. They can be used by either player to Summon monsters from the Extra Deck, although normally each player can only use one at a time.

During the original version of New Master Rule, all monsters Special Summoned from the Extra Deck can only be Summoned to an Extra Monster Zone or a zone pointed to by a Link Monster. Starting in the April 1, 2020 revision, this restriction only applies to Link Monsters and Pendulum Monsters Pendulum Summoned from the Extra Deck.
