Manabu presents himself as strict and no-nonsense, dedicated to upholding the principles of MIK and enforcing them. He is depicted as honorable, both in positive and negative aspects; during his Rush Duel with Yudias Velgear, he consoled him over struggling with Tributing his monsters, assuring him it wasn't meaninglessly sacrificing them, while he previously refused to Rush Duel Yuhi Ohdo because he was careless enough to leave his cards outside. After Yudias defeated him, Manabu kept his word to leave him alone as long as he didn't cause trouble.
By the second season, Manabu's personality has become incredibly conflicted between his loyalty to his friends and to MIK. Despite his heart being in the right place, his actions often serve to oppose his good intentions causing him act out in in temper tantrums. He then begins to spiral and behave incredibly impulsively, with the hope of someone scolding him to set him straight. After defeating Makuto, Manabu appears to have reverted to his old personality.  Despite his stoic façade, Manabu is prone to suddenly exclaiming cat and chemistry puns after uttering certain words, possibly due to a neurological disorder.

Etymology
"Manabu" may come from 学ぶ, meaning "to study." The kanji itself means "study" and it coincidently also makes up part of Gavin Sogetsu's Japanese name, Gakuto (学人).
Manabu's "Commander Study" persona may be a reference to the possible meaning of his name.
Although Manabu's victory had won the matches for the local team, Manabu not being a UTS member convinced everyone to continue the Duels. Before they could, Chupataro broke through a wall and demanded to Rush Duel. Manabu was shocked Chupataro had escaped the MIK Headquarters and ordered his capture after learning they couldn't contact HQ, though Chupataro threatened everyone in the room. Bochi was unable to stop Chupataro, having used up his power Dueling Manabu, so Yudias accepted Chupataro's challenge despite Manabu and Yuhi warning him they didn't know Chupataro's plans. Yudias gained a significant lead over Chupataro when the latter used a Trap to reduce the ATK of his monster just to draw "Magical Sheep Girl Meeeg-chan". To Manabu's shock, a strange substance emerged from Chupataro's Duel Disk when he Summoned "Meeeg-chan", physically materializing her. Manabu then learned Mitsuko had orchestrated the escape of Chupataro and several other aliens, having been captured on purpose. Magical Sheep Girl Meeeg-chan destroyed Yudias' monsters and physically attacked him, so Manabu tried to stop the Duel, but Yudias continued after learning a monster physically materializing was not a rule violation. Meeeg-chan attacked Yudias again during his own turn, his monsters unable to protect him as they were still only Solid Vision, but Yudias again insisted on Dueling fairly to win, succeeding in Summoning and powering up "Galactica Oblivion" to defeat Meeeg-chan, causing her to vanish. Manabu and the MIK agents had Chupataro and his Duel Disk taken away afterwards.
Chupataro claimed to have been tricked by Zuwijo before losing consciousness, so Manabu and Nyandestar visited the UTS office to interrogate Yudias over his whereabouts. Yudias didn't answer and the Ohdo twins told Manabu to stop interrogating him as Yudias wouldn't lie, a statement Manabu admitted he knew to be true after Nyandestar's agreement. After Manabu complimented the Duel Rice Crackers London Kirishima had provided, Yudias asked what would happen to Zuwijo if MIK caught him, and Manabu explained Zuwijo's likely sentence of cryostasis, sharply declaring that he was doing all he could and asking of all Yudias could do was plead and beg before departing. Despite Manabu's harshness, he structured his search to give the UTS group a small lead in their own efforts. As they continued searching for Zuwijo, Manabu worried that Zuwijo had left the town and assured Nyandestar it wasn't her fault she had trouble tracking old aline traces. They were informed an alien had been detected and rushed to the location, but found Tell Kawai there. Tell Kawai denied he was working with Zuwijo, claiming that he wanted to witness what concerned the future of all aliens on Earth, indicating Zuwijo was at Mutsuba Tower.
Manabu and Nyandestar hurried to Mutsuba Tower, shocked to see the massive "Voidvelgr Hecatoncheir" towering above the Tower, but Zuwijo had already materialized it with the Earthdamar by the time they reached the roof, leaving MIK powerless to stop the Rush Duel. After Yuhi failed to create a new Earthdamar for Yudias, Nyandestar told Manabu the Duel was out of their hands and Manabu learned the power of Earthdamar depended on the Duelist using it. During the Duel Manabu learned Mutsuba Cable were broadcasting the match and tried to have it stopped, but Manya and Yuamu instead suggested using the opportunity to convince the townspeople it was special effects. Yudias destroyed "Hecatoncheir, but to Manabu's shock Zuwijo Summoned "Voidvelgr Requiem" and used the Earthdamar's "Egil Velgear Gyurudo" to clad himself with it after its power was spread across Mutsuba Town. The Earthdamar's power partially materialized monsters from Duelists' Decks across the town, including Manabu's "Dynamo Might", and caused Yuhi to collapse. As Manabu tried to find the source of the phenomenon, Yuamu suggested he check the power source of Mutsuba Tower; to his shock, Manabu learned the tower was operating and Yuamu explained her belief Zuwijo was spreading the Earthdamar with Mutsuba Tower's radio transmitter. Manabu suggested stopping the Duel, but Yuamu revealed Yuhi's soul had been trapped inside "Voidvelgr Requiem" and worried doing so could be dangerous. Asaka Mutsuba then used her Heavy Cavalry to remove the Earthdamar from Mutsuba Tower, dematerializing most of the monsters. After Yuamu conveyed the unconscious Yuhi's request for Yudias to defeat Zuwijo, Yudias was able to do so by destroying "Requiem" with "Galactica Oblivion", freeing Yuhi's soul. Manabu immediately ordered his agents to capture Zuwijo, but Mitsuko fled with him before they could do so. Yuhi soon awoke, and admitted he didn't believe Zuwijo to be as bad as they thought given his restraint while clad in "Requiem", while Yudias believed Zuwijo to be hiding something.

Second Arc
Manabu and Nyandestar learned that someone had been visiting the Coruffium in the Alien Residential Area, and visited the Coruffium themselves to deduce the identity of the intruders. They discovered Yudias, Yuhi and Yuamu at the Coruffium and confronted them, Manabu being both concerned for their safety and incensed the trio were trespassing in MIK jurisdiction. To Manabu's surprise, Director General Ranran Nanahoshi, who Manabu learned had been Nyandestar's first partner, arrived and declared her intention to close the Coruffium despite Manabu's suggestion they should consider the wishes of the residents. The Ohdo twins and Yudias briefly escaped, but Manabu and the other MIK agents cornered them in the Coruffium arena, where Manabu again disagreed with Ranran over whether to close the Coruffium; Venus Ganiko suggested they Rush Duel to decide the matter. Though Ranran boasted she had never taken damage, let alone lost a Rush Duel, Manabu easily destroyed her monsters and depleted most of her LP with "Chemicalize Salamander"; Nyandestar explained that Ranran had no real strategy and her win record had come from her subordinates throwing their matches with her. Despite this, Ranran made a surprising comeback on her next turn, Manabu praising his boss's efforts before defeating her on his next turn with "Analyze Phlogiston", ensuring the Coruffium would remain open.

Though the Coruffium remained open, Manabu still tried to insist Yudias and the Ohdo twins left the Alien Residential Area, but as he argued with Yuhi over the matter, the UTS employees were accosted by a girl in a cloak, demanding to know what they wanted with her master Rovian. Yudias and the twins asked the girl about Yuna Goha, who they were searching for, but the girl refused to answer, violently thrashing Fisher Sukai, who she was holding hostage, and losing her temper, prompting Manabu and Nyandestar to worry the girl's aggression would cause a fight. Ganiko suggested a Rush Duel to resolve the argument; a Duel the girl accepted upon seeing Yudias' unusual Duel Disk with the promise she would take all of their Duel Power if she won, a resource Manabu was unfamiliar with. Manabu returned to the Coruffium with the Ohdo twins to watch Yudias' Rush Duel with the girl and was surprised by her strength. Manabu also learned how Yudias had acquired his Duel Disk and cards from an armored stranger, and came to agree with Yudias and Yuamu's suspicions the stranger may have been Yuna Goha. To Manabu's shock, the girl revealed she was Yuna and activated an Equip Spell Card, a Spell type Manabu had never seen before, powering up her "Sevens Road Magician" and defeated Yudias. As she had promised, the girl took Yudias and the twins' Duel Power, resulting in them being pinned to the ground by the Alien Residential Area's high gravity, which Ranran explained to them, to Manabu's surprise.<ref name="ep20">{{episode|Yu-Gi-Oh!
