Varis uses "Anesthrokket" as Link Material (1 Level 4 or lower Dragon) to Link Summon the Link-1 "[[Striker Dragon]]" (1000/←) to the Extra Monster Zone on his right-hand side. Upon its Link Summons, Varis activates the effect of "Striker Dragon", allowing him to add "[[Boot Sector Launch]]" from his Deck to his hand. He then Normal Summons "[[Rokket Synchron]]" (0/0) and activates its effect: when this card is Normal Summoned, he can target 1 Level 5 or higher DARK Dragon monster in his GY and Special Summon it in Defense Position, but he must negate its effects, destroy it during the End Phase, also he cannot Special Summon monsters from the Extra Deck for the rest of this turn, except DARK monsters. He targets and Special Summons "Riot Dragon". Varis then activates the 2nd effect of "Striker Dragon", allowing him target 1 face-up monster he controls and 1 "Rokket" monster in his GY, destroying that monster on the field, and adding that other monster from the GY to his hand. He destroys "Riot Dragon" and adds "Tracer" to his hand. Varis activates the [[Field Spell]] "Boot Sector Launch", whose 1st effect grants all "Rokket" monsters 300 ATK/DEF (Synchron: 0 → 300 ATK/0 → 300 DEF). He then activates the 2nd effect of "Boot Sector Launch" allowing him to either Special Summon up to 2 "Rokket" monsters with different names from his hand in Defense Position, or Special Summon "Rokket" monsters with different names from his GY in Defense Position, up to the difference between the number of monsters he controls and his opponent controls, so long as his opponent controls more monsters than he does. He chosses the 1st option and Special Summons "Tracer" in Defense Position (1600 → 1900 ATK/1000 → 1300 DEF). Varis activates the 2nd effect of "Riot Dragon": if this card is in his GY, Varis can target 1 "Borrel" or "Rokket" monster in his GY, then destroy 1 card he controls or is in his hand, and if he does, he adds that target to his hand. He destroys "Boot Sector Launch" ("Synchron": 300 → 0 ATK/ 300 → 0 DEF)("Tracer": 1900 → 1600 ATK/1300 → 1000 DEF) and adds "Caliber" to his hand. Varis uses "Synchron" and "Striker Dragon" as Link Material (2 DARK Dragon monsters) to Link Summon the Link-2 "[[Dillingerous Dragon]]" (1600/↑↓) to the Extra Monster Zone on his right-hand side. Varis Special Summons "Caliber" from his hand in Defense Position to the zone the bottom-center Link Arrow of "Dillingerous" points to, via its 1st effect. He then uses the effect of "Tracer" to destroy "Dillingerous" to Special Summon "[[Magnarokket Dragon]]" (1800/1200) from his Deck in Defense Position. Varis uses "Magnarokket" and "Tracer" as Link Material (2 Level 4 or lower Dragon monsters, except Tokens) to Link Summons the Link-2 "[[Twin Triangle Dragon]]" (1200/↓→) to the Extra Monster Zone on his left-hand side, and activates its effect, paying 500 LP (Varis: 4000 → 3500 LP) to target 1 Level 5 or higher monster in his GY and Special Summon it to his zone this card points to, but it cannot attack this turn, also it has its effects negated. He Special Summons "Exploderokket" in Defense Position<ref>"Exploderokket Dragon" was placed in the centre Main Monster Zone, instead of the zone the bottom-center Link Arrow of "Twin Triangle Dragon" was pointing to.</ref>. Varis then activates the 2nd effect of "Dillingerous": if a "Rokket" monster(s) is Special Summoned to his field, while this card is in his GY (except during the Damage Step), Varis can Special Summon this card, but it is banished when it leaves the field. Varis uses "Exploderokket", the Link-2 "Twin Triangle", and the Link-2 "Dillingerous" (3+ Effect Monsters) to Link Summon the Link-5 "[[Borrelend Dragon]]" (3500/↙←↑→↘) to the Extra Monster Zone on his right-hand side. Varis activates the 3rd effect of "Borrelend", allowing him to target 1 Effect Monster on the field and 1 "Rokket" monster in his GY, negate the effects of that monster on the field, and if he does, Special Summon that other monster from his GY. His opponent cannot activate cards or effects in response to this effect's activation. He negates the effects of "Caliber" and Special Summons "Magnarokket" in Defense Position. Varis uses Level 4 "Magnarokket" and the Level 4 [[Tuner]] "Caliber" as [[Synchro Material]] to [[Synchro Summon]] the Lveel 8 "[[Borreload Savage Dragon]]" (3000/2500) in Attack Position, and activates its 1st effect: if this card is Synchro Summoned, can equip 1 Link Monster from his GY to this card, and if he does, he places [[Borrel Counter]]s on this card equal to that Link Monster's Link Rating. "Savage Dragon" gains ATK equal to half the ATK of the monster equipped to it by its effect. He equips the Link-2 "Twin Triangle" ("Savage Dragon": 3000 → 3600 ATK, Borrel Counters: 0 → 2).

These Tokens cannot be Tributed for a Tribute Summon. Varis chains the 2nd effect of "Savage Dragon": when his opponent activates a card or effect, he can remove 1 Borrel Counter from this card ("Savage Dragon": Borrel Counters: 2 → 1) to negate the activation. "Spool Code" is negated and the direct attack continues Playmaker: 4000 → 400 LP).

Jump Festa 2023: Playmaker vs. Varis was a scripted Duel that took place during the Jump Festa 2023[1]Shouya Ishige and Shunsuke Takeuchi reprised their roles as Yusaku Fujiki/Playmaker and Roken Kogami/Varis, respectively.

Featured Duel: Playmaker vs. Varis[edit]

The duel is conducted as a Master Duel.

Turn 1: Varis
Varis Normal Summons "Rokket Tracer" (1600/1000) and activates its effect, allowing him to target 1 face-up card he controls and destroy it, and in doing so, he Special Summons 1 "Rokket" monster from his Deck, except "Rokket Tracer", also he cannot Special Summon monsters from the Extra Deck for the rest of this turn, except DARK monsters. He targets and destroys "Tracer" and Special Summons "Rokket Caliber" (1700/100) from his Deck in Defense Position. Varis then activates the 2nd effect of "Caliber", tributing it to Special Summon 1 DARK Dragon or Machine monster from his hand, except "Rokket Caliber". He Special Summons "Double Disruptor Dragon" (2500/1500) in Defense Position. Varis activates the 1st effect of "Double Disruptor", tributing it to target 2 "Rokket" monsters in his GY with different names and Special Summon them in Defense Position. He targets and Special Summons "Tracer" and "Caliber". Varis then activates the 2nd effect of "Double Disruptor", banishing it from his GY to add the Ritual Spell "Heavy Interlock" from his Deck to his hand, which he then activates. "Heavy Interlock" allows Varis to Ritual Summon "Borreload Riot Dragon" by Tributing monsters from his hand or field, and/or destroying "Rokket" monsters from his hand or face-up field, whose total Levels equal 8 or more. He destroys the Level 4 "Tracer" and the Level 4 "Caliber" to Ritual Summon "Borreload Riot Dragon" (3000/2500) fromhis hand in Attack Position. Due to the 2nd effect of "Heavy Interlock", "Riot Dragon" cannot be destroyed by battle with a monster Special Summoned from the Extra Deck, and is unaffected by the activated effect of any monster Special Summoned from the Extra Deck. Varis sets 2 cards in his Spell & Trap Zones.

Turn 2: Playmaker
Playmaker discards "Sea Archiver" to activate "Cynet Mining", allowing him to add 1 Level 4 or lower Cyberse monster from his Deck to his hand. He adds "Firewall Defenser", which he then Normal Summons (1200/1500). Playmaker uses "Defenser" as Link Material (1 Level 4 or lower Cyberse monster) to Link Summon the Link-1 "Link Disciple" (500/↓) to the Extra Monster Zone on his right-hand side. Playmaker activates the 1st effect of "Defenser": if this card is sent to the GY as Link Material for a Cyberse monster, he can Special Summon 1 "Firewall" monster from his Deck, except "Firewall Defenser". However, he cannot Special Summon monsters the turn he activates this effect, except Cyberse monsters. He Special Summons "Firewall Phantom" (2000/1300) from his Deck in Attack Position to the Main Monster Zone "Link Disciple" points to. Playmaker uses "Disciple" and "Phantom" as Link Material (2 Cyberse monsters) to Link Summon the Link-2 "Cyberse Witch" (800/↙↓) to the Extra Monster Zone on his right-hand side. He then activates the 1st effect of "Phantom": if this card is sent to the GY as Link Material for a Cyberse monster, he can add 1 "Cynet" Spell/Trap from his Deck to his hand, then discard 1 card. He adds "Cynet Rollback" from his Deck to his hand, and then discards "Cynet Circuit". Playmaker then activates the 2nd effect of "Phantom", banishing it from his GY, in order to shuffle 1 Cyberse monster from his GY into his Deck during the End Phase of this turn. Playmaker activates the Quick-Play Spell "Cynet Rollback", allowing him to target 1 of his banished Cyberse monsters and Special Summon it. He targets and Special Summons "Phantom" in Defense Position to the Zone the bottom-left Link Arrow of "Witch" points to. Playmaker activates the 1st effect of "Witch" and chains the effect of "Sea Archiver" in his GY, and resolves the chain: since a monster was Normal or Special Summoned to a zone a Link Monster points to (except during the Damage Step), Playmaker can Special Summon "Sea Archiver" from his GY, but it is banished when it leaves the field. He Special Summons "Sea Archiver" (300/2100) in Defense Position to the Zone the bottom-center Link Arrow of "Witch" points to. The 1st effect of "Witch" resolves: if a monster is Special Summoned to a zone this card points to (except during the Damage Step), he can banish 1 Spell from his GY in order to add 1 Cyberse Ritual Monster and 1 "Cynet Ritual" from his Deck to his hand. He banishes "Cynet Mining" and adds "Cyberse Sage" and "Cynet Ritual" fromhis Deck to his hand. Playmaker the activates the 2nd effect of "Witch": during the Main Phase of the turn this card's 1st effect was activated, he can target 1 Level 4 or lower Cyberse monster in his GY and Special Summon it. He targets and Special Summons "Defenser" in Defense Position.

Playmaker activates "Cynet Ritual", allowing him to Ritual Summon any Cyberse Ritual Monster, by Tributing monsters from his hand or field whose total Levels equal or exceed the Level of the Ritual Monster he Ritual Summons. He tributes the Level 5 "Phantom" to Ritual Summon the Level 1 "Cyberse Sage" (0/0) in Attack Position, and activates its 1st effect, allowing him to Fusion Summon 1 Fusion Monster from his Extra Deck, by banishing Fusion Materials mentioned on it from his field and/or GY, including a Cyberse monster. He banishes "Phantom" and "Disciple" (1 Cyberse Ritual, Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, or Link Monster + 1 Cyberse monster) to Fusion Summon "Cyberse Disabwurm" (2300/1500) in Attack Position. Playmaker uses "Sea Archiver" (which is banished due to its own effect) and "Code Radiator" in his hand (2 Cyberse Monsters) to Link Summon the Link-2 "Code Talker Inverted (1300/←→) to the zone the bottom-center Link Arrow of "Witch" points to (If a Cyberse monster Playmaker controls would be used as Link Material for a "Code Talker" monster, "Radiator" can also be used as material from his hand.). In response to this, Varis activates the 1st effect of "Riot Dragon", and then chains the Quick-Play Spell "Quick Launch", and then resolves the chain. "Quick Launch" allows Varis to Special Summon 1 "Rokket" monster from his Deck, but it cannot attack, and it is destroyed during the End Phase. He Special Summons "Exploderokket Dragon" (2000/2000) in Defense Position. The 1st effect of "Riot Dragon" resolves: when his opponent Special Summons a monster(s), he can negate the Special Summon, and if he does, he destroys that monster(s), then he must either destroy "Riot Dragon" or 1 "Rokket" monster he controls. The Special Summon of "Code Talker Inverted" is negated and is destroyed, along with "Exploderokket". As the Link Summon of "Inverted" was negated, Playmaker cannot activate the 2nd effect of "Radiator", which would've allowed him to make the ATK of "Riot Dragon" 0 and negate its effect. Playmaker uses "Sage" and the Link-2 "Witch" (2+ Effect Monsters) to Link Summon the Link-3 "Protectcode Talker" (2300/←↑→) to the Extra Monster Zone on his right-hand side. He then uses "Defenser", "Disabwurm", and the Link-3 "Protectcode Talker" (3+ Cyberse Monsters) to Link Summon the Link-5 "Firewall Dragon Darkfluid - Neo Tempest Terahertz" (3000/↙←↑→↘) to the Extra Monster Zone on his right-hand side, and then activates its 1nd effect, allowing him to send 1 Cyberse monster from his Deck or Extra Deck to the GY, and if he does, this card gains the Attribute of that monster sent to the GY, also it gains 2500 ATK. He sends the LIGHT "Firewall Dragon" from his Extra Deck to the GY (Terahertz: 3000 ATK → 5500 ATK). "Terahertz" can attack monsters a number of times each Battle Phase, up to the number of different Attributes it has. It currently has 2: DARK ad LIGHT.

"Terahertz" attacks "Riot Dragon". In response, Varis activates his Set Trap, "Magic Cylinder", in order to negate the attack and inflict damage to Playmaker, equal to the attacking monster's ATK. In response, Playmaker activates the Quick-Play Spell "Cynet Crosswipe", tributing a Cyberse Monster in order to target and destroy 1 card on the field. He tributes "Terahertz" and destroys "Riot Dragon". As its target is no longer on the field, "Magic Cylinder" resolves without effect.

Playmaker sets 1 card in his Spell & Trap Zone. During the End Phase, Playmaker uses the effect of "Phantom" activated earlier to shuffle "Inverted" back into his Extra Deck. Also during this End Phase, Varis activates the 2nd effect of "Exploderokket": if this card is in the GY because it was destroyed on the field by battle or card effect and sent there this turn, he can Special Summon 1 "Rokket" monster from his Deck, except "Exploderokket Dragon". He Special Summons "Anesthrokket Dragon" (0/2200) in Defense Position.

Turn 3: Varis

Varis uses "Anesthrokket" as Link Material (1 Level 4 or lower Dragon) to Link Summon the Link-1 "Striker Dragon" (1000/←) to the Extra Monster Zone on his right-hand side. Upon its Link Summons, Varis activates the effect of "Striker Dragon", allowing him to add "Boot Sector Launch" from his Deck to his hand. He then Normal Summons "Rokket Synchron" (0/0) and activates its effect: when this card is Normal Summoned, he can target 1 Level 5 or higher DARK Dragon monster in his GY and Special Summon it in Defense Position, but he must negate its effects, destroy it during the End Phase, also he cannot Special Summon monsters from the Extra Deck for the rest of this turn, except DARK monsters. Varis activates the Field Spell "Boot Sector Launch", whose 1st effect grants all "Rokket" monsters 300 ATK/DEF (Synchron: 0 → 300 ATK/0 → 300 DEF). Varis uses "Synchron" and "Striker Dragon" as Link Material (2 DARK Dragon monsters) to Link Summon the Link-2 "Dillingerous Dragon" (1600/↑↓) to the Extra Monster Zone on his right-hand side. Varis Special Summons "Caliber" from his hand in Defense Position to the zone the bottom-center Link Arrow of "Dillingerous" points to, via its 1st effect. He then uses the effect of "Tracer" to destroy "Dillingerous" to Special Summon "Magnarokket Dragon" (1800/1200) from his Deck in Defense Position. Varis uses "Magnarokket" and "Tracer" as Link Material (2 Level 4 or lower Dragon monsters, except Tokens) to Link Summons the Link-2 "Twin Triangle Dragon" (1200/↓→) to the Extra Monster Zone on his left-hand side, and activates its effect, paying 500 LP (Varis: 4000 → 3500 LP) to target 1 Level 5 or higher monster in his GY and Special Summon it to his zone this card points to, but it cannot attack this turn, also it has its effects negated. He Special Summons "Exploderokket" in Defense Position[2]. Varis then activates the 2nd effect of "Dillingerous": if a "Rokket" monster(s) is Special Summoned to his field, while this card is in his GY (except during the Damage Step), Varis can Special Summon this card, but it is banished when it leaves the field. Varis uses "Exploderokket", the Link-2 "Twin Triangle", and the Link-2 "Dillingerous" (3+ Effect Monsters) to Link Summon the Link-5 "Borrelend Dragon" (3500/↙←↑→↘) to the Extra Monster Zone on his right-hand side. Varis uses Level 4 "Magnarokket" and the Level 4 Tuner "Caliber" as Synchro Material to Synchro Summon the Level 8 "Borreload Savage Dragon" (3000/2500) in Attack Position, and activates its 1st effect: if this card is Synchro Summoned, can equip 1 Link Monster from his GY to this card, and if he does, he places Borrel Counters on this card equal to that Link Monster's Link Rating. "Savage Dragon" gains ATK equal to half the ATK of the monster equipped to it by its effect. He equips the Link-2 "Twin Triangle" ("Savage Dragon": 3000 → 3600 ATK, Borrel Counters: 0 → 2).

"Savage Dragon" attacks directly. In response, Playmaker activates his set Quick-Play Spell "Spool Code": when an opponent's monster declares a direct attack, while Playmaker has 3 or more Cyberse monsters in his GY, he negates the attack, then, he can Special Summon up to 3 "Spool Tokens" (Cyberse/LIGHT/Level 1/ATK 0/DEF 0) in Defense Position.

"Borrelend" attacks directly. In response, Playmaker activates the 2nd effect of "Cynet Circuit" in his GY: if his LP are 2000 or less, he can banish this card from his GY, then return 1 "Firewall" Link Monster from his GY to the Extra Deck, then he can Special Summon it from his Extra Deck. He returns "Terahertz" from his GY to his Extra Deck and Special Summons it to the Extra Monster Zone on his right-hand side. Playmaker then activates the 2nd effect of "Terahertz", sending "Secure Gardna" from his Extra Deck to the GY, in order for "Terahertz" to gain its Attribute and 2500 ATK ("Terahertz": 3000 → 5500 ATK). A replay occurs and Varis chooses not to attack.

During the End Phase, Playmaker activates the 2nd effect of "Protectcode" in his GY: if he controls a "Firewall" Link Monster, he can banish any number of Link Monsters from his GY whose total Link Ratings exactly equal 3, and Special Summon this card from his GY, but banish it when it leaves the field. He banishes the Link-1 "Secure Gardna" and the Link-2 "Witch".

Turn 4: Playmaker

Since his LP are 2000 LP or less, Playmaker activates the 2nd effect of "Cynet Rollback" in his GY, banishing it from his GY, in order to target 2 of his banished Cyberse monsters and adding them to his hand. He adds "Sea Archiver" and "Phantom" to his hand. Playmaker Normal Summons "Sea Archiver" (300/2100). Playmaker uses "Sea Archiver" and the Link-3 "Protectcode" as Link Material (2+ Effect Monsters) to Link Summon the Link-4 "Accesscode Talker" (2300/←↑→↓) to the Extra Monster Zone on his right-hand side ("Protectcode" is banished due to its own effect), and activates its 1st effect: upon being Link Summoned, Playmaker can target 1 Link Monster that was used as material for its Link Summon, and have "Accesscode" gain ATK equal to that monster's Link Rating x 1000. In response, Varis activates the 3rd effect of "Borrelend", negating the effects of "Accesscode" and Special Summoning "Anesthrokket" from his GY in Defense Position[3]. Playmaker activates his Skill "Neo Storm Access": if his LP are at 1000 or below, he adds 1 randomly generated Cyberse monster from a nearby Data Storm to his Extra Deck. Playmaker activates the Spell "Link into the VRAINS!",letting him Special Summon 1 monster from his hand, but negate its effects, then, immediately after this effect resolves, Link Summon 1 Link Monster using monsters he controls as material, including that monster. This Link Summon cannot be negated, also his opponent cannot activate cards or effects when a monster is Link Summoned this way. He Special Summons "Phantom" (2000/1300) in Attack Position, the uses "Phantom", "Terahertz" and the Link-4 "Accesscode" as Link Material (3+ Effect Monsters) to Link Summon the Link-6 "Firewall Dragon Singularity" (3500/←↖↑↗→↓) to the Extra Monster Zone on his right-hand side. Playmaker activates the 1st effect of "Singularity", letting him target cards his opponent controls and/or in their GY, up to the number of different types of monsters (Ritual, Fusion, Synchro, Xyz) Playmaker controls and in his GY, and return them to the hand, and if he does, this card gains 500 ATK for each card returned. He has 2: the Ritual Monster "Sage" and the Fusion Monster "Disabwurm", so he adds "Tracer" and "Caliber" from Varis' GY to his hand ("Singularity": 3500 → 4500 ATK).

"Singularity" attacks and destroys "Savage Dragon" (Varis: 3500 → 2600 LP). Playmaker activates the 2nd effect of "Singularity": if a monster(s) this card points to is destroyed by battle or sent to the GY, he can target 1 Cyberse monster in his GY and Special Summon it. He Special Summons "Terahertz" to the Main Monster Zone the bottom-center Link Arrow of "Singularity" points to. Playmaker activates the 2nd effect of "Terahertz", sending the LIGHT "Lady Debug" from his Deck to the GY in order to gain its Attribute and 2500 ATK ("Terahertz": 3000 → 5500 ATK).

"Terahertz" attacks "Borrelend" (Varis: 2600 → 600 LP) but it cannot be destroyed in battle.

"Terahertz" can attack up to the number of Attributes it has. It currently has 2: DARK and LIGHT. "Terahertz" attacks "Borrelend" again, but doesn't destroy it (Varis: 600 → 0 LP).

  2. "Exploderokket Dragon" was placed in the centre Main Monster Zone, instead of the zone the bottom-center Link Arrow of "Twin Triangle Dragon" was pointing to.
  3. Varis shouldn't have been able to do this, as the effect activations of "Accesscode Talker" cannot be responded to by the opponent.
