In the OCG and TCG, monsters' printed Ranks can range from 0 to 12 (though all monsters with a printed Rank of 0 have a Rank condition stating that their original Rank is to be treated as a different value). In the Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL anime, Xyz Monsters with an original Rank of 13 have also been seen. With the exception of "Number 93: Utopia Kaiser" and "Number 100: Numeron Dragon", a monster's printed Rank is the same as the Level of its required Xyz Materials (including Rank 0 monsters, whose required Xyz Materials are themselves Xyz Monsters that have no Level).

An Xyz Monster's Rank is not its Level; Xyz Monsters do not have a Level. Consequently, Xyz Monsters cannot be used for Synchro, Ritual, or Xyz Summons (unless specifically permitted); and any effects that would refer to the Level of a monster, such as those of "Gravity Bind", "Level Limit - Area B" and "Burden of the Mighty", cannot be applied to an Xyz Monster. Since Xyz Monsters do not have Levels, cards such as "Star Changer", "Scanner" and "Give and Take" cannot be used on them at all. Cards that modify Levels such as "Harmonic Waves", "Feedback Warrior", "Synchro Boost" and "Demotion" also cannot be used on Xyz Monsters.

When Xyz Summoning an Xyz Monster, the player normally must use two or more monsters with the same Level, whose Levels are the same as the Rank of the Xyz Monster being Summoned.

The average ATK for monsters of each Rank are a fair bit higher than for their respective Levels (for example, barring negative effects, 2-Material Rank 3 monsters can reach 2100 ATK and 2-Material Rank 4 monsters can reach 2600 ATK, compared to 1750 ATK for a Level 3 monster and 2000 ATK for a Level 4 monster). Just as with any other category of monsters, Xyz Monsters with more powerful effects may have lower ATK and DEF than other monsters of the same Rank, while Xyz Monsters with negative effects or more difficult Summoning conditions may have higher ATK and DEF.

An Xyz Monster's Rank is not its Level—Xyz Monsters do not have a Level. Consequently, Xyz Monsters cannot normally be used as material for a Synchro or Xyz Summons (unless specifically permitted, such as with the Pendulum Effect of "Xiangke Magician"); and any effects that refer to the Level of a monster (such as "Gravity Bind" and most Ritual Spell Cards) cannot be applied to Xyz Monsters. Since Xyz Monsters do not have Levels, cards that modify Levels (such as "Harmonic Waves") do not affect the Rank of Xyz Monsters. However, some card effects refer to both Levels and Ranks together (such as "Al-Lumi'raj" and "Toon Mask").

A Rank Star

A Rank (Japanese: ランク Ranku) is a property exclusive to Xyz Monsters, in place of a Level. An Xyz Monster's Rank corresponds to the required Levels of its Xyz Materials.

Card layout[edit]

The original Rank of an Xyz Monster Card is generally represented by a number of stars a yellow star on a black circle printed in the top-left. The Rank stars being left-aligned contrasts to the right-alignment of Level stars. Monsters with a printed Rank of 0 use monsters without Levels as Material, and have a Rank condition that treats their original Rank as a different value.

In the OCG and TCG, monsters' original Ranks can range from 1 to 13. A monster's printed Rank is the same as the Level of its required Xyz Materials, with a handful of exceptional cases where the Summoning requirement has been changed to require Xyz monsters.

Mechanics[edit]

A monster can only have a single Rank at a time.[1]

When Xyz Summoning an Xyz Monster, the player normally must use two or more monsters with the same Level, whose Levels are the same as the Rank of the Xyz Monster being Summoned.

Trivia[edit]

 • Due to the impracticality of Xyz Summoning them in the normal way, all Rank 11 and higher Xyz Monsters either have an alternate Summoning procedure (Xyz Evolution), or were designed to be Summoned via another card's effect (e.g. a "Rank-Up-Magic" card). However, a few do give a benefit for Summoning them with their printed materials, such as "Number 77: The Seven Sins".
