Rank

A Rank (Japanese: ランク Ranku) is a property exclusive to Xyz Monsters, in place of a Level. An Xyz Monster's Rank corresponds to the required Levels of its Xyz Materials.

Card layout

The original Rank of an Xyz Monster Card is generally represented by a number of stars a yellow star on a black circle printed in the top-left. The Rank stars being left-aligned contrasts to the right-alignment of Level stars. Monsters with a printed Rank of 0 instead have a Rank condition that treats their original Rank as a different value.

In the OCG and TCG, monsters' printed Ranks can range from 0 to 13. A monster's printed Rank is the same as the Level of its required Xyz Materials, unless it lists Xyz Monsters as material (which do not have Levels).

Mechanics

A monster can only have a single Rank at a time.[1]

When Xyz Summoning an Xyz Monster, the player normally must use two or more monsters with the same Level, whose Levels are the same as the Rank of the Xyz Monster being Summoned.

An Xyz Monster's Rank is not its Level—Xyz Monsters do not have a Level. Consequently, Xyz Monsters cannot normally be used as material for a Synchro or Xyz Summons (unless specifically permitted, such as with the Pendulum Effect of "Xiangke Magician"); and any effects that refer to the Level of a monster (such as "Gravity Bind" and most Ritual Spell Cards) cannot be applied to Xyz Monsters. Since Xyz Monsters do not have Levels, cards that modify Levels (such as "Harmonic Waves") do not affect the Rank of Xyz Monsters. However, some card effects refer to both Levels and Ranks together (such as "Al-Lumi'raj" and "Toon Mask").

Trivia

  • Due to the impracticality of Xyz Summoning them in the normal way, all Rank 11 and higher Xyz Monsters either have an alternate Summoning procedure (Xyz Evolution), or were designed to be Summoned via another card's effect (e.g. a "Rank-Up-Magic" card). However, a few do give a benefit for Summoning them with their printed materials, such as "Number 77: The Seven Sins".
