A "Spell Counter" card

A Spell Counter, known as Magical Power Counter (魔（ま）力（りょく）カウンター Maryoku Kauntā) in Japan, is a type of counter used by a variety of cards.

Cards that use Spell Counters typically have the Spell Counter symbol somewhere in their artwork (such as on their clothing or accessories). However, some cards (such as "Old Vindictive Magician") feature Spell Counters in their artwork but do not have any effects related to them; other cards (such as "Dark Red Enchanter") do not feature Spell Counters in their artwork despite their effects relying on them.

Spell Counters are usually centered around Spellcaster-Type monsters. The Structure Decks Spellcaster's Judgment and Lord of the Magician contain a number of Spell Counter-related cards.

There is a "Spell Counter" card that officially represents Spell Counters.

Effect[edit]

Spell Counters themselves do not have an effect, but many cards have effects that require Spell Counters.

Spell Counters can only be placed on cards that have an effect that allows Spell Counters to be placed on them. If that card's effect is negated, Spell Counters cannot be placed on it and any Spell Counters already on it are removed.[1] Some cards (such as "Mythical Institution") have effects that specifically support cards that Spell Counters can be placed on.
