Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel is a console, PC, Android, and iOS video game. It was released on consoles and PC on January 19, 2022.[1]

Features

  • Cross-play and cross-progression - all systems can play against each other, and can use the same save file for each player.
  • Solo Mode - learn the card game's mechanics through tutorials and enjoy the storylines of cards.
  • Events - timed events called Festivals, with special rules and Forbidden/Limited lists.

Gameplay

Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel is a free-to-play multiplayer game where players can either duel against other players or play a singleplayer mode. Player can obtain cards via spending Gems on pack openings or crafting specific card(s) using Craft Points based on its rarity. The game uses a modified OCG Forbidden & Limited List that will be updated with each updates. Master Duel also features various accessories to personalize player's profile and dueling field, mostly based on a popular and notable cards.

Earning Gems

Ranked Duel

The main gameplay mode of Master Duel, where players from all across the world face off against each other.

Solo Mode

This single-player mode lets the player sample several archetypes of the game, and offers the option of using loaner decks to help new players get a feel of these archetypes.

Events

Time-limited events impose a special deck-building restriction to add some variation to the game, and offer more Gems or special cosmetics as rewards.

DUEL LIVE

A side mode where the player can watch replays of recent matches from either Ranked, Event, or Casual Duels. It's intended to help expose a player to new playstyles or inspire them to build new Decks. There's a daily mission that yields 5 Gems for watching a DUEL LIVE replay.

An update in 14 Jul 2023 expanded on this mode, allowing the player to pick from a selection of replays or enable autoplay for the mode. The selection menu shows the "main cards" for the Decks to give a clue on the matchup.

Proficiency Test

A side mode added on 6 Nov 2023, where players can test themselves by answering questions about card trivia and completing basic tasks in Dueling. Rewards include Legacy Pack tickets and various accessories.

Cards

The game includes 11,994 cards (plus 10 alternate artworks) as of October 10, 2023, going up to Age of Overlord. The card pool is updated at least monthly, usually (but not always) with cards that have received release in both TCG and OCG within the previous year. Some popular cards are given Summoning/activation animations (see below).

A number of older cards that have been available in both the TCG and OCG since before Master Duel's release are still missing. These are:

Special animations

The following cards cause the game to play a 2D animation when Summoned (if they are monsters) or a 3D animation when resolved (if they are Spells/Traps). So far, all cards with an alternate artwork in-game have an animation, with every artwork having a different matching one.

Spirit monsters

Pendulum Monsters

Ritual Monsters

Link Monsters

These cards have animations in other miscellaneous situations, e.g. Duel winners play a 2D animation when their victory condition is achieved.

Forbidden/Limited list

The game's Forbidden/Limited Lists, at initial release, was a variant of the April 2021 OCG Lists to match the availability of cards at the time.

Banlist changes in the game's Standard format are more frequent than the physical game, and different cards get affected to account for the game's best-of-1 format and staggered card release schedule. For instance, cards can become unbanned to coincide with an expansion that introduces them, and known powerful cards can be preemptively restricted the moment they debut in this game.

Various events feature their own specific Forbidden/Limited Lists which are usually the same as the Standard format but have additional cards restricted to fit the theme of the event (such as all non-Synchro Extra Deck Monsters being Forbidden in the Synchro Festival event).

Notes

  1. Kevin Tewart, who is U.S. head of development for the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game, has previously expressed his opposition to using a regular hexagram as an occult symbol due to its common usage as the Star of David.[2]
