Special rules
The end of Volume 4 outlines the set of rules that the Yu-Gi-Oh! R series follows. They are based off of the Battle City Rules fundamentally, with a few changes. These rules are exclusive to the Yu-Gi-Oh! R series. The rules stated in the volume are as follows:

The end of Yu-Gi-Oh! R outlines the set of rules that the Yu-Gi-Oh! R series follows. They are based on the Super Expert Rules (which are used during the Battle City arc and the Rite of the Duel).

*Each player's opening hand consists of six cards. Each player draw one card at the start of their first turn (so will have seven cards in their hand at the start of their first turn).
Main Phase

** This rule is due to the fact that this same rule was used in the Rite of the Duel in the manga.
*On your own turn, you may activate up to one spell card from your hand. Unlike in the Official Card Game rules, you can't activate several at a time when the field is empty.

*You can only place one spell card and one trap card card face-down during your turn. If you try to cheat and put down two spell cards or two trap cards, your Duel Disk will sound an alarm.

*Face-down spell cards can be activated whenever the phase changes.

*Face-down trap cards can be activated whenever their trigger event occurs, beginning from the moment they are set on the field.

*Monsters may be summoned in attack mode or in defense mode. In the Official Card Game , monsters can be set as well. In this manga, they aren't used that way, but they probably could be. After using a fusion spell card, the Fusion Monster can't attack.

Battle Phase

*Face-down Trap Cards can be activated whenever their activation timing occurs, beginning from the moment they are Set on the field.
:At this point, all damage to all monsters is dealt simultaneously. In the manga, it is sometimes drawn as though the damage is dealt in a certain order, but it really happens simultaneously.
+
*Monsters can be Normal Summoned in face-up Attack Position or face-up Defense Position. They can also be Normal Set (although this never occurs in the Yu-Gi-Oh! R manga).
::For example, in the battle between Yugi and Depre in Yu-Gi-Oh! R volume 3, Depre attacks with "Eva Epsilon" and "Greed Quasar." As Yugi takes damage from "Greed Quasar," he activates "Fit of Rage," but when the damage to "Toy Magician" and "Eva Epsilon" is calculated, this isn't reflected. That is because both the damage to Yugi which triggered "Fit of Rage" and the "Toy Magician" counter-attack were treated as having occurred simultaneously, with "Fit of Rage" applied after the battle phase.

 +
;Battle Phase

*Players can declare attacks with multiple monsters at once.
 +
*If only one attack is declared, the attack functions like it does in the OCG.
 +
*If multiple monsters declare attacks at the same time, first all of the attacking monsters and their respective attack targets are selected, then the game can proceed to the Damage Step. All damage from simultaneous attacks is inflicted simultaneously (even if the panel is drawn in a way that might make it appear otherwise).
 +
**For example, in Yu-Gi-Oh! R, during Yugi Mutou's Duel with Depre Scott, Depre attacks Yugi directly with "Eva Epsilon" and "Greed Quasar" at the same time. Yugi takes the direct attack from "Greed Quasar", but activates the effect of "Toy Box" to Special Summon the "Toy Magician" that was hidden inside it and redirects the attack of "Eva Epsilon" to "Toy Magician", after which "Toy Magician" destroys "Eva Epsilon" by battle. Due to taking the direct attack from "Greed Quasar", Yugi activates "Fit of Rage", increasing "Toy Magician's" ATK points (after it had already battled "Eva Epsilon").
 +
*Fusion Monsters cannot declare an attack on the turn they are Fusion Summoned. In addition, Fusion Monsters count as multiple monsters, equal to the number of its Fusion Materials.

Special rules[edit]

The end of Yu-Gi-Oh! R volume 4: "Return of the Dragon" outlines the set of rules that the Yu-Gi-Oh! R series follows. They are based on the Super Expert Rules (which are used during the Battle City arc and the Rite of the Duel).

Game start
  • Both players start the Duel with 4000 Life Points.[2]
  • Each player's opening hand consists of six cards. Each player draw one card at the start of their first turn (so will have seven cards in their hand at the start of their first turn).[2]
    • This rule is due to the fact that this same rule was used in the Rite of the Duel in the manga.[2]
Main Phase
  • Each player may only activate one Spell Card from their hand during each of their turns.[2]
  • Each player may only Set one Spell Card and one Trap Card card during each of their turns.[2]
    • If a player tries to cheat by attempting to Set two Spell Cards or two Trap Cards, their Duel Disk will sound an alarm.[2]
  • Face-down Spell Cards can be activated whenever the phase changes.[2]
  • Face-down Trap Cards can be activated whenever their activation timing occurs, beginning from the moment they are Set on the field.[2]
  • Monsters can be Normal Summoned in face-up Attack Position or face-up Defense Position. They can also be Normal Set (although this never occurs in the Yu-Gi-Oh! R manga).[2]
Battle Phase
  • Players can declare attacks with multiple monsters at once.
  • If only one attack is declared, the attack functions like it does in the OCG.[2]
  • If multiple monsters declare attacks at the same time, first all of the attacking monsters and their respective attack targets are selected, then the game can proceed to the Damage Step. All damage from simultaneous attacks is inflicted simultaneously (even if the panel is drawn in a way that might make it appear otherwise).[2]
    • For example, in Yu-Gi-Oh! R Duel Round 24: "Another Partner!!", during Yugi Mutou's Duel with Depre Scott, Depre attacks Yugi directly with "Eva Epsilon" and "Greed Quasar" at the same time. Due to taking the direct attack from "Greed Quasar", Yugi activates "Fit of Rage", increasing "Toy Magician's" ATK points (after it had already battled "Eva Epsilon").[2]
  • Fusion Monsters cannot declare an attack on the turn they are Fusion Summoned. In addition, Fusion Monsters count as multiple monsters, equal to the number of its Fusion Materials.
