"Gore at War", known as "Thirst for Victory" in the Japanese version, is the fortieth episode of the Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS anime. It first aired in Japan on February 21, 2018, and aired in Canada on January 13, 2019.
Due to Varis' tactics, many of The Gore's monsters have been destroyed. However, The Gore's fighting spirit still does not waver. In order to turn things around, The Gore summons his powerful ace monster, "Gouki The Giant Ogre"!

Summary
Playmaker notes that since Link Monsters can't be placed in Defense Position, they're the perfect prey for "Mirror Force", and the true goal behind Varis's use of "Link Protection" was to destroy The Gore's Link Monsters. Ai comments that he sees, and Varis bursts out laughing at Gore's shocked expression before smirking (as this section is included in the recap, it is cut from the dub).
In Den City's orphanage, Gore's manager, the orphanage owner, and the orphans watch in horror at Gore's monsters all being destroyed. The oldest boy reassures the others that Gore will win, and in Café Nom, Kolter whispers The Gore's name (in the dub, he comments that this looks bad), and in the nearby café, Shima tells The Gore to hang in there. Back in LINK VRAINS, the smoke clears to reveal Gore's empty field, and Ai asks if Gore lost heart. Varis tells him that now's the time if he wants to give up and laughs, but Gore comments that Varis destroying all of his monsters has erased his doubts; he won't back down, and he'll use everything he's built up to defeat Varis (in the dub, Varis claims to have broken Gore's spirit, but Gore refutes this, admitting that round one went to Varis, but it won't be the end, and he'll topple Varis like he'll topple the Tower of Hanoi). He activates the effect of "Gouki Ringtrainer" since he controls no monsters, Special Summoning it in Defense Position, and then Special Summons "Gouki The Great Ogre" from his Graveyard with its ATK reduced by 500. "Great Ogre" appears with 2100 ATK, and Gore ends his turn, telling Varis to bring it on. Varis notes that even when Gore's field was destroyed, he quickly resurrected his monsters to face him, and he declares that he'll honor Gore's unbreakable spirit by completely crushing him (in the dub, Varis states that Gore thinks that his refusal to give up makes him noble, but it does not and all it does is waste Varis's time, and he will end this charade).
He declares his turn and draws, then he activates the Quick-Play Spell Card "Quick Launch" from his hand (which contains "Boot Sector Launch", "Shelrokket Dragon" and "Squib Draw"), Special Summoning "Magnarokket Dragon" from his Deck. Gore warns him that the effect of "Great Ogre" will reduce its ATK by its DEF, and declares "Shrieking Howl". "Great Ogre" lets out a roar, the shockwave reducing "Magnarokket" to 600 ATK. Varis then activates another Quick-Play Spell, "Squib Draw", destroying the "Magnarokket" on his field to draw two cards. Then he activates the Field Spell Card, "Boot Sector Launch" and activates its effect, Special Summoning two "Rokket" monsters from his hand in Defense Position. He Special Summons "Shelrokket Dragon" and "Metalrokket Dragon", and the effect of "Boot Sector Launch" also increases their ATK and DEF by 300, to 2300 and 1700 respectively. He chants "Appear! The future circuit that lights up my path!" and declares that the Summoning conditions are two "Rokket" monsters, setting "Shelrokket" and "Metalrokket" in the Link Arrows to Link Summon the Link-2 "Booster Dragon". Then he Normal Summons another "Shelrokket Dragon" from his hand, and it gains 300 ATK due to "Boot Sector Launch", bringing it up to 1400. But Gore declares the "Shrieking Howl" effect of "Great Ogre" again, reducing the ATK of "Shelrokket" to zero. Varis then activates the effect of "Booster Dragon" (adding that in the dub, he doesn't care what Gore does), and it glows purple as Varis explains that he can increase the ATK and DEF of "Shelrokket" by 500. "Shelrokket" glows purple as it is targeted, but since a Link Monster's effect targeted "Shelrokket", its effect activates and it self-destructs. Then, it destroys a monster in the same column as it, and any monsters in adjacent zones. The specter of "Shelrokket" releases a burst of pellets, destroying both "Great Ogre" and "Trainer", much to Gore's shock. Playmaker notes that this is Varis's specialty; an effect that activates when targeted by an effect. Ai gasps that all of Gore's monsters are really all destroyed (in the dub, Ai comments that Gore's lost all of his monsters again, Playmaker notes that he's wide open for a direct attack). Varis declares battle, attacking Gore directly with "Booster Dragon", which leaps at Gore and strikes him with its tail. Gore cries out in pain, but remains on his feet, though the watching children are horrified and furious that their hero is in pain, gasping his name. The smoke clears as Gore falls to 1000 LP, but he declares that he's still standing (in the dub, he asks if that's it). Varis simply activates the effects of the destroyed "Magnarokket" and "Shelrokket", Special Summoning different "Rokket" monsters from his Deck during the End Phase; another "Shelrokket" and "Metalrokket", who appear in Defense Position and gain 300 DEF due to "Boot Sector Launch". Varis ends his turn there, and Ai comments that The Gore is hanging in there despite losing all his monsters, and he calls The Gore incredible and claims he's moved to tears. Playmaker comments that it took him long enough; this isn't enough to break a Duelist like Gore (in the dub, Ai is more despondent, and Playmaker admits that Gore is in trouble, but that doesn't mean he can't make a comeback).
Gore declares his turn and draws, activating the Spell Card "Gouki Re-Match" from his hand, Special Summoning two "Gouki" monsters with different Levels from his Graveyard in Defense Position. He resurrects "Gouki Twistcobra" and "Gouki Moonsault", then activates the effect of "Moonsault", returning a "Gouki" Link Monster in his Graveyard to his Extra Deck to add a "Gouki" monster from his Graveyard to his hand. Returning "Gouki Jet Ogre" he immediately chants "Appear! My circuit!" He declares that the Summoning conditions are two "Gouki" monsters, and he sets "Twistcobra" and "Moonsault" in the Link Arrows to Link Summon the Link-2 "Gouki Jet Ogre". Since it was sent from the field to the Graveyard, the effect of "Twistcobra" activates, allowing Gore to add a different "Gouki" card from his Deck to his hand. Next he Summons "Gouki Suprex", which activates its effect, allowing Gore to Special Summon another "Gouki" monster from his hand. He Special Summons "Gouki Tagpartner", then activates the effect of "Gouki Jet Ogre"; once per turn by destroying itself, it can switch all other monsters on the field to Attack Position. Both "Shelrokket" and "Metalrokket" lose their defensive glow as they change battle position, and then Gore activates the other effect of "Jet Ogre" since it was sent to the Graveyard, increasing the ATK of all "Gouki" monsters he controls by 500 until the end of the turn. Then he activates the Equip Spell Card "Gouki Grit", Special Summoning the destroyed "Jet Ogre" from the Graveyard and equipping it with "Gouki Grit". Ai cheers that Gore is making a rally (in the dub he comments that he has more beef than a cattle ranch), and Playmaker wonders if Gore will attack with all of his monsters now; he would destroy all of Varis's monsters, but he can't deplete his LP, and even if he destroys the "Rokket" monsters they'll just resurrect, while if he destroys Varis's Link Monster, Varis will just resurrect the "Rokkets" to Summon a second one. He wonders what Gore will do. Gore chants "Appear! My circuit!" and authorizes the Link Arrows, explaining that the Summoning conditions are at least three "Gouki" monsters. He sets "Suprex", "Tagpartner", and the Link-2 "Jet Ogre" in the Link Arrows, linking the circuit to Link Summon the Link-4 "Gouki The Giant Ogre". "Giant Ogre" appears with 3000 ATK, and Varis smiles, calling it interesting.
Playmaker repeats the new monster's name, and Ai comments that it's a new one (in the dub, Playmaker notes that it's Gore's strongest "Ogre" yet). Gore grins, commenting that he isn't done and that his improved "Gouki" Deck's power is only getting started. Since "Suprex" was sent from the field to the Graveyard, Gore can add a different "Gouki" card from his Deck to his hand, and he chooses another "Gouki Octostretch". Then since the ATK of "Tagpartner" changed and it was used to Link Summon, the Summoned monster gains 1000 ATK until the end of the turn. "Giant Ogre" increases to 4000 ATK, and then Gore activates its effect since its ATK changed, increasing its ATK by 1000 until the end of the turn. "Giant Ogre" karate chops the ground and a massive sword appears in the ground, and "Giant Ogre" grabs it and levels it at Varis as it glows a faint red and increases to 5000 ATK. Ai (somehow now holding a sizeable knife himself) is shocked by the high ATK value (in the dub he comments that Gore is sharper than he thought), and "Giant Ogre" roars as it holds its blade aloft, blasting out powerful gusts of wind. Pigeon and Frog are badly buffeted, and Frog tells Pigeon to hang in there and keep filming; Gore declares battle, ordering "Gouki The Giant Ogre" to attack "Booster Dragon" with "Ogre Sword". With one swipe of the massive sword, "Giant Ogre" pulverizes "Booster Dragon" and reduces Varis to 900 LP - 3100 damage in an instant, as Ai observes (in the dub, he comments that it must have hurt). The watching children all cheer that he did it, big brother Gore can do it, and Gore's manager and the orphanage owner exchange pleased nods. Varis angrily mutters that Gore got him, and Gore comments that it's payback for earlier (in the dub, he snaps that it changes nothing; Gore retorts that it changes everything, and Varis scoffs that it's because Gore is a buffoon). Varis activates the effect of "Booster Dragon", Special Summoning a Dragon monster from his Graveyard. He resurrects "Triple Burst Dragon", and Gore ends his turn, causing the effects of "Giant Ogre" and "Tagpartner" to end and the ATK of "Giant Ogre" to return to normal. He declares that he always improves; that's what makes him The Gore (in the dub, he tells him that he'll be going down on his next turn).
Varis declares his turn and draws, then he activates the effect of "Triple Burst Dragon", Tributing it to Special Summon "Booster Dragon" from his Graveyard, then also Special Summoning a Level 4 or lower Dragon monster from his hand. He Special Summons "Hibernation Dragon" and activates its effect since it was Normal or Special Summoned, adding a Level 4 or lower DARK Dragon monster from his Graveyard to his hand, which he promptly Summons; "Magnarokket Dragon", which gains 300 ATK due to "Boot Sector Launch", bringing it to 2100. Then Varis activates the effect of "Booster Dragon" to increase the ATK of "Magnarokket" by a further 500, but this activates the effect of "Magnarokket" to self-destruct. It explodes into a bullet, which is loaded into the cartridge on "Booster Dragon's" head (this shot is cut from the dub), and Varis explains that he can choose one monster on the field and send it to the Graveyard. He chooses "Gouki The Giant Ogre", and "Booster Dragon" levels its head, bringing "Giant Ogre" into its sights. Playmaker notes that The Gore's field will be empty if "Giant Ogre" is destroyed, and Ai screams that it'll be the end of the story if Gore is attacked directly (in the dub, Ai panics in binary). Varis orders his monster to fire, and it blasts a ball of energy from its mouth. But Gore responds with the effect of "Giant Ogre"; it is unaffected by monsters with equal or less ATK (in the dub, before he explains, he smugly tells Varis that he means "Misfire".) "Giant Ogre" easily deflects the blast with its sword into the ruins surrounding the Tower of Hanoi. Ai gasps and cries Gore's name (in the dub, he comments that it was close; he almost deleted half his data), and Playmaker smiles. Gore comments that it's too bad, and Varis snarls that he's so stubborn. Gore declares that until now he's battled in front of large crowds in the dub, Gore asks if Varis has any more, and Varis states that Gore is beginning to annoy him. Gore replies that he must be doing something right). As he remembers holding the children's belt aloft, he states that he tried to make Duels more exciting to entertain the many children who root for him. But he's realized he's all alone; there are no fans rooting for him here. He realized that they always Duel alone, they fight for themselves, not for anyone else. That's why he decided to fight for himself; to prove he's the strongest, for the thirst for victory that's deep in his heart. He tells Varis to bring it on with all his strength (in the dub, Gore is less selfish, though he still maintains that he's fighting for himself).
Varis smiles. "Fine. As you wish," he replies (in the dub he calls Gore delusional). Ai asks what Varis is going to do; thanks to the last attack, their LP are about equal and Varis has no cards in his hand, but Playmaker tells Ai to look at Varis's field, and Ai looks at the four monsters. Playmaker declares that Varis will summon a Link-4, and Ai gasps that he must be about to summon "Borreload Dragon" (in the dub, Playmaker asks how Ai could have missed that, and Ai huffs that he's not talking to Playmaker). Varis chants "Manifest! The future circuit that lights up my path!" and authorizes the Link Arrows, declaring that the Summoning conditions are at least three Effect Monsters. He sets "Hibernation Dragon", "Shelrokket Dragon", and the Link-2 "Booster Dragon" in the Link Arrows, linking the circuit and chanting "My gale that slices open the closed world! Link Summon! Appear, Link-4 Borrelsword Dragon!" "Borrelsword Dragon" appears with 3000 ATK, and Ai comments that it looks tough. Playmaker notes that it has the same ATK as "Borreload", but does it have a different effect for this situation? Ai asks if Gore is in trouble again (in the dub, Ai initially claims that it doesn't look so tough if you take away its extra features, then admits that maybe Gore should be worried). Varis admits that he can't believe that Gore forced him to play "Borrelsword Dragon", but it's the end of the line. He snaps that he doesn't agree with fighting for the lame reason of fighting for others, nor for himself; he just carries out his goal (in the dub, Gore admits that "Borrelsword" looks intimidating; Varis snaps that it doesn't just look intimidating, it is intimidating, admitting that he never expected to Summon it against him, but to reward his smidgen of competence he will wipe it off the face of this realm).
He locks eyes with Gore and declares battle, and "Borrelsword Dragon" attacks "Giant Ogre". "Borrelsword's" twin blades slam together, and it brings them down as "Giant Ogre" meets it with "Ogre Sword". The shockwave of their clash buffets Ai and blasts Frog and Pigeon away, cutting out the feed that Kolter and Shima are watching, and Shima protests that it's the most important part as he taps his tablet frantically. The orphanage loses their feed too, and one of this kids angrily asks why they can't see it. Gore's manager whispers his first name (this is cut from the dub). Back in LINK VRAINS, Varis explains that "Borrelsword Dragon" can't be destroyed in battle once per turn, and Gore adds that "Giant Ogre" also isn't destroyed, nor is it affected by monsters with equal or fewer ATK. But Varis activates the effect of "Borrelsword", by battling "Giant Ogre", it will gain half its ATK until the end of the turn, rising to 4500. Ai gasps that it now has more ATK than "Giant Ogre", so effects can affect it now. Varis does just that, explaining that the ATK of "Giant Ogre" will be halved. "Giant Ogre" falls to 1500 ATK, and "Borrelsword" begins to push it back. Ai gasps the ATK value, crying that since "Metalrokket" has 2000 ATK, it'll be able to affect it too (in the dub, he asks if there isn't anything they can do for him). Varis activates the additional effect of "Borrelsword", switching "Metalrokket" into Defense Position. But this activates the effect of "Metalrokket Dragon", causing it to self-destruct. "Metalrokket" turns into a blue sphere and loads into "Borrelsword's" cartridge, which begins to spin, and Varis explains that all Gore's cards in the same column as "Metalrokket" will be destroyed. As "Borrelsword" and "Giant Ogre" continue to struggle, "Borrelsword" opens its mouth and extends its cannon, and Varis declares "Blast Destruction". "Borrelsword" blasts a fountain of yellow energy from its maw that consumes "Giant Ogre" and blasts Gore as well as he screams, and Ai screams his name.
But the smoke clears to reveal both "Giant Ogre" and The Gore still standing. Ai asks how he survived, and then he sees that the ATK of "Giant Ogre" stands at 2500. Gore reminds Varis that when the ATK of "Giant Ogre" changes, it gains 1000 ATK until the end of the turn, bringing it back to 2500, higher than "Metalrokket" and rendering it unaffected by its effect. He comments that it's too bad, but Varis mutters that he doesn't feel like winning so inelegantly (in the dub, he tells Varis that he's failed, and Varis asks if he's sure).
Gore is surprised by his statement, and Varis reveals that since he activated the "Blast Destruction" effect during his turn, "Borrelsword" can attack again. Gore gasps "What? and Varis declares that this is the end, ordering "Borrelsword" to attack with "Electric Borrelsword Slash". "Borrelsword Dragon" wheels and dives towards "Giant Ogre", swatting its sword away with its tail and knocking it into the air, and then brings its blades down, bisecting "Giant Ogre" and destroying it. Gore screams as the cloud of smoke engulfs him. The smoke clears to reveal Gore still standing, hunched over and his eyes in shadow. In the orphanage, a picture of Gore with the kids on the bookcase falls off and shatters on the floor. The orphanage owner picks it up and whispers George's name, and one of the boys comes over and asks that Gore won, didn't he? She reassures him that of course he did, and Gore's manager adds that The Gore never loses. Isn't that right, George? he thinks (in the dub he thinks that there's always a first time, and let's just hope this isn't it).
Back in LINK VRAINS, Ai cheers that Gore survived again. But Playmaker replies that he didn't; The Gore's LP is zero, and it decreases even as he speaks. Ai groans sadly as Playmaker grits his teeth angrily. With his loss, Gore's Avatar turns magenta and begins to disintegrate. He tells Playmaker that this was all he was able to do. Playmaker replies that thanks to The Gore he was able to learn Varis's strategies (in the dub, he specifies that now they know the identity of Varis's secret card). Gore smiles, and he tells Playmaker that he's leaving the rest to him before vanishing entirely, his data absorbed by the Tower of Hanoi.
Varis tells Playmaker that they're the only two Duelists left in this world, and it's finally time to bring this to an end. Playmaker turns to face Varis and he agrees (in the dub, Varis claims that there's only enough room in this world for one of them, and Playmaker vows that Duelist will be him), and as the two of them face off in front of the half-completed Tower of Hanoi, a Data Storm begins to whips up around the Tower...

Turn 3: Gore
As he controls no monsters, Gore activates the effect of "Gouki Ringtrainer" in his hand to reveal it and Special Summon itself, then Special Summon a "Gouki" Link Monster from his GY, but decrease that monster's ATK by 500. He Special Summons "Ringtrainer" (0/0) in Defense Position, then Special Summons "Gouki The Great Ogre" (2600 → 2100/↙↓↘) to the right of "Ringtrainer".
Turn 4: Varis
Varis' hand contains "Quick Launch", "Shelrokket Dragon", "Boot Sector Launch" and "Squib Draw". Varis activates the Quick-Play Spell Card "Quick Launch" to Special Summon a "rokket" monster from his Deck, but it cannot attack, and it is destroyed during the End Phase. He Special Summons "Magnarokket Dragon" (1800/1200) in Attack Position. The effect of "Great Ogre" reduces the ATK of all monsters on the field by a value equal to their original DEF ("Magnarokket": 1800 → 600 ATK). Varis activates the Quick-Play Spell Card "Squib Draw, destroying a "rokket" monster he controls to draw two cards. He destroys "Magnarokket". Varis activates the Field Spell Card "Boot Sector Launch". Varis activates the effect of "Boot Sector Launch" to either Special Summon up to two "rokket" monsters from his hand in Defense Position, or excavate the top 6 cards of his Deck, send any excavated "Rokket" cards to the GY, and place the other cards on the bottom of his Deck in any order. He chooses the first effect and Special Summons "Shelrokket Dragon" (1100/2000) and "Metalrokket Dragon (1700/1400). The effect of "Boot Sector Launch" increases the ATK and DEF of all "Rokket" monsters on the field by 300 ("Shelrokket": 1100 → 1400/2000 → 2300; "Metalrokket": 1700 → 2000/1400 → 1700).

He targets "Shelrokket", but as a Link Monster's effect that targeted "Shelrokket" was activated, Varis activates its effect to destroy itself, then destroy a monster in the same column as "Shelrokket", as well as all monsters in the zones adjacent to that monster. He destroys "Great Ogre" and the adjacent "Ringtrainer". "Booster Dragon" attacks Gore directly (Gore: 2900 → 1000 LP). During the End Phase, as they were destroyed and sent to the GY this turn, Varis activates the effect of "Magnarokket" and "Shelrokket" to Special Summon a "Rokket" monster with a different name from his Deck. He Special Summons "Shelrokket" (1100 → 1400/2000 → 2300) and "Metalrokket" (1700 → 2000/1400 → 1700) in Defense Position.
Turn 5: Gore
Gore activates the Spell Card "Gouki Re-Match" to Special Summon two "Gouki" monsters with different Levels from his GY in Defense Position. He Special Summons "Gouki Moonsault" (1900/0) and "Gouki Twistcobra" (1600/0). Gore activates the effect of "Moonsault", returning a "Gouki" Link Monster from his GY to the Extra Deck, then adding a "Gouki" monster from his GY to his hand. He returns "Gouki Jet Ogre" to his Extra Deck and adds an unknown "Gouki" monster to his hand. Gore sets "Moonsault" and "Twistcobra" in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Gouki Jet Ogre" (2000/←↓) to the Extra Monster Zone. As "Twistcobra" was sent from the field to the GY, Gore activates its effect to add a "Gouki" card with a different name from his Deck to his hand. He adds an unknown card. Gore Normal Summons "Gouki Suprex (1800/0). As "Suprex" was Normal Summoned, Gore activates its effect to Special Summon a "Gouki" monster from his hand. "Giant Ogre" attacks and destroys "Booster Dragon" (Varis: 4000 → 900 LP). As "Booster Dragon" was destroyed and sent to the GY, Varis activates its effect to Special Summon a Dragon monster from his GY. He Special Summons "Triple Burst Dragon" (2400/↑←↓).
Turn 6: Varis
Varis activates the effect of "Triple Burst Dragon", Tributing it to Special Summon a Link-2 or lower monster from his GY, then Special Summon a Level 4 or lower Dragon monster from his hand. He Special Summons "Booster Dragon" (1900/↙↘) and "Hibernation Dragon" (600/???). As "Hibernation Dragon" was Special Summoned, Varis activates its effect to add a Level 4 or lower DARK Dragon monster from his GY to his hand. He adds "Magnarokket" and subsequently Normal Summons it (1800 → 2100/1200 → 1500). Varis activates the effect of "Booster Dragon", increasing the ATK/DEF of "Magnarokket" by 500, but as a Link Monster's effect that targeted "Magnarokket" was activated, Varis activates its effect to destroy it, then send a monster on the field to the GY. He targets "Giant Ogre", but "Giant Ogre" is unaffected by the effects of monsters with ATK less than or equal to that of "Giant Ogre".
Varis sets "Hibernation Dragon", "Shelrokket" and the Link-2 "Booster Dragon" in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Borrelsword Dragon" (3000/↑←↙↓). "Borrelsword Dragon" attacks "Giant Ogre", but "Borrelsword Dragon" cannot be destroyed by battle once per turn. "Giant Ogre" cannot be destroyed in battle by monsters with equal ATK to it. As "Borrelsword Dragon" battled Gore's monster, Varis activates its effect to make "Borrelsword Dragon" gain ATK equal to half the ATK of Gore's monster and then have Gore's monster lose the same ATK ("Giant Ogre": 3000 → 1500 ATK; "Borrelsword Dragon": 3000 → 4500 ATK). Varis activates the effect of "Borrelsword Dragon" to change an Attack Position monster on the field to Defense Position, also allowing "Borrelsword Dragon" to make a second attack during each Battle Phase this turn. He targets "Metalrokket", but as a Link Monster's effect that targeted "Metalrokket" was activated, Varis activates its effect to destroy it, then destroy all of Gore's cards in the same column as "Metalrokket". As the ATK of "Giant Ogre" changed, Gore activates its effect, increasing its ATK by 1000 until the end of the turn ("Giant Ogre": 1500 → 2500 ATK). As the ATK of "Metalrokket" is lower than the ATK of "Giant Ogre", "Giant Ogre" is not affected by its effect, therefore is not sent to the GY. "Borrelsword Dragon" attacks and destroys "Giant Ogre" (Gore: 1000 → 0 LP).
