Forum:Field Commander Rahz VS Torrential / Trap Hole / BTH

Ok just need some clarity on this card and all other similar cards.

Field-Commander Rahz (When this card is Normal Summoned or Special Summoned, select 1 Level 4 or lower Warrior-Type monster from your Deck except "Field-Commander Rahz" and place it on top of your Deck.)

Now if I activate Torrential / Trap Hole / or BTH does he still get his effect? and likewise do other monsters that are similar also get their effects.

And does my opponent have to show me the card he selects to place on top of his deck?

Also what does it mean to declare priority on a card?

And why do monarchs get their effect even if they are BTH or Torrential or Trap Holed? I would say since they weren't successfully summoned they shouldn't get the effect. But everyone keeps telling me that they do so I guess I'll go with it.

  • First, I must make clear why negate is not the same as destroy. If I attempt to summon Field-Commander Rahz, there are 2 things my opponent can do:
1) Respond to the declaration of the summon with a summon-negating card, such as Forced Back or Solemn Judgment, in which case the monster was not summoned successfully, and its effect is not activated, or
2) he can allow the summon to be completed, in which case the monster was successfully summoned. Then, after Priority is declared/passed, he can respond with cards like Torrential Tribute or Bottomless Trap Hole.
Now, what is Priority and when can it be declared? Well, Priority is any Player's right to put the activation of his monster's effect on Chain Link 1 (It activates first, before anything else), so long as it can be activated, in the event of a chain. Priority can only be declared if the monster is first summoned successfully, so if its summon was negated, you cannot declare Priority. Also, if a continuous effect is triggered when you summon your monster, like King Tiger Wanghu, that results in that monster being removed from the field, you cannot declare Priority, because Continuous effects are applied before anything else (that is, because they do not use a Chain, so they activate and resolve before anything else can happen).
Now for your specific questions:
1) Field-Commander Rahz's effect can be activated once he is successfully summoned. Torrential Tribute and Bottomless Trap Hole can both be activated only in response to a successful summon, so Rahz's effect will activate and resolve as normal, even if one of the above traps removes him from the field, so long as you choose to activate his effect. The monster sent to the top of the deck must be shown to the opponent, so that they can verify it is a valid target.
2) Monarchs get their effects so long as they are tribute summoned successfully. Easy as that - it doesn't matter what happens next, so long as their summon is not negated, their effects are activated. That is because of the nature of their Trigger effects. Since their effects are all mandatory, they automatically activate immediately after being summoned, so they always go on Chain Link 1 (you don't have to declare Priority).

Hope I cleared the field a bit! --Darth Covah 13:25, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

in response to your answer. How do I know which effects can be put on priority? I mean I'm not new to the game but just never used this whole priority thing before so I'm just trying to get everything right the first time.

Also one other thing. Can Light and Darkness Dragon negate a synchro summon. A friend of mine used it and said it could because krebons (who i was using to synchro summon) was activating an effect when the synchro summon was happening. So he said krebons would be destroyed and i wouldn't get to synchro summon as long as light and darkness dragon is on the field. I found this to be a little fishy but I went along with it anyway. Someone clear this up for me...thanks.

oops...forgot to post my name with that question...not that it matters i guess.

If you use Priority to respond to a Summon, you can respond with any Ignition Effect or Spell Speed 2+ card (Quick Effects, Quick-Play Spell Cards, Trap Cards). For example, if you Normal Summon "Exiled Force", you can activate "Exiled Force"'s Ignition Effect before your opponent can respond with "Torrential Tribute".
"Stardust Dragon" cannot negate a Synchro Summon since a Synchro Summon does not start a Chain. Using a Tuner Monster for a Synchro Summon does not start a chain.

  • I believe all optional monster effects can use Priority - that is, so long as any and all conditions they have are met. For instance, you can use Priority when you summon Cannon Soldier, and use itself as a tribute. Or you can use Priority when you summon Exiled Force, to tribute itself and destroy a monster. It goes without saying, as I'm sure you've understood so far, that you declare Priority only when you Summon an Effect monster successfully, and that monster has an optional effect. Mandatory effects are always triggered before anything else, so they kinda "claim" priority on their own, so to speak. If this does not clarity the meaning of Priority enough, check the appropriate article, which is here. --Darth Covah 01:12, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
All the examples you gave are Ignition Effects. If you are using Priority when responding to a Summon, you can only activate Spell Speed 2+ effects or Ignition Effects. You do not use Priority to activate Optional Trigger Effects like "Mobius the Frost Monarch". --Deus Ex Machina (Talk) 01:52, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

Can I use priority to activate Breaker's effect to destroy a magic/trap card before torrential tribute destroys my breaker? And would my opponent activate torrential tribute as soon as breaker is summoned succesfully or after i designate a target? 199.242.176.85 21:45, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

No. When "Breaker the Magical Warrior" is successfully Normal Summoned, his effect to gain a Spell Counter automatically activates as Chain Link 1. You cannot use Priority to activate anything because there is an effect as Chain Link 1. Your opponent then activates "Torrential Tribute" in chain to "Breaker the Magical Warrior", so that "Torrential Tribute" resolves first and destroys everyhting, and then the effect of "Breaker the Magical Warrior" resolves without effect. --Deus Ex Machina (Talk) 22:48, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
