Discarding (Japanese:
Cards can be discarded in one of two ways:
- During the turn player's End Phase due to hand size limit.
- By card that specifically uses this term (as a cost, effect, or as part of a Summoning condition).
It is possible to discard multiple cards at once. For example, "Card Destruction" discards multiple cards at once, but is still considered a single discard (for the purposes of cards such as "Blessings of the Nile").
While discarded cards are normally sent to the Graveyard, some card effects can cause discarded cards to be moved to a location instead. Even if they are not sent to the Graveyard, they are still considered to be discarded. For example, even while "Macro Cosmos" is active, the cost of cards such as "Magic Jammer" can still be paid.
Only cards that specifically say that a card is discarded do so. Cards such as "Hand Destruction", "Chain Destruction", "Polymerization" and "Black Illusion Ritual" can send cards from the hand to the Graveyard, but they do not discard cards.
The "Dark World" and "Fabled" archetypes revolve around discarding.
