"Tribute 1 monster and Special Summon 1 Spellcaster-Type monster from your hand."

I used this card the other day and decided to tribute my opponent's monster because it does not indicate that I can only tribute my monsters as other cards do. My friends, including my opponent agreed that this was legal, but I'm not so sure now.

My question is this: Does tribute 1 monster mean I can tribute 1 monster on the field, regardless of controller, or is it implied that I may only tribute a monster on my side of the field?

Thanks in advance. Disruptorbeam (talkcontribs) 03:36, October 18, 2010 (UTC)

You have to tribute your own monster.

"You can Tribute a monster that was targeted by "Soul Exchange" for "Magical Dimension"

So essentially, that means you have to tribute a monster on your side of the field. Usually when effects that require a tribute but don't designate which controller's monsters for tributes are needed, then it will usually require your monsters. EXAMPLE: Fragrance Storm can be from a plant on either side of the field; Tribute Doll requires a monster you control. --Drew-Gi-Oh! (talk) 03:44, October 18, 2010 (UTC)

Can you find an exact ruling for this? I believe that bringing up Tribute Doll works in favor of magical dimension allowing for the use of any monster. I can see what you're saying since the Fragrant Storm says destroy one (type) of monster on the field. I would just like an official ruling for tributes, if that wouldn't be a problem. What do you mean by ruling? Try reading the card. Tribute Doll states: "Tribute 1 monster on your side of the field to activate this card.".-- HHTurtle Talk   12:29, October 18, 2010 (UTC)

I believe he means that Tribute Doll is esplicitly mentioning that you have to tribute a monster on your side of the field, while Magical Dimension is not. The reason why Tribute Doll is mentioning it, is because Tribute Doll is quite an old card. During the time period Tribute Doll was released for the last time (i.e. 2005), it was a common practise to include everything into the lore, even things that are common sense. Times have changed and Konami tries to have the lores as short as possible. That's why Magical Dimension doesn't mention from where to tribute the monster, as it is common sense that you tribute a monster from your side of the field. If Tribute Doll was ever to be released again, its lore would probably be erratad to reflect this.
In the errata section of Magical Dimension you can actually see that the card was originally specifying that you have to tribute a monster from your side of the field, back then when it was released in 2006. Poseidome (talkcontribs) 13:14, October 18, 2010 (UTC)

Ok, it's just that it should be a basic rule that you can only tribute your own monsters unless a card states otherwise. If you used that kind of logic in YGO, I can also say that I can force you to pay 200 LP for my Solemn Warning because it doesn't state which player needs to. Conclusion, bad logic is just bad.-- HHTurtle Talk   13:28, October 18, 2010 (UTC)

It is in fact a basic rule that you can only tribute monsters on your side of the field, I decided to use the the search feature to look at "tributes". And in response to the tribute doll age argument, there is a duelist revolution version that states it in exactly the same terms. I retract my thanks from this post because of the rude nature of the other posters. Disruptorbeam (talkcontribs) 14:12, October 18, 2010 (UTC)
