"Rush Duel Resignation", known as "So Long, Student Council Prez!" in the Japanese version, is the fourth episode of the Yu-Gi-Oh! SEVENS anime. It first aired in Japan on April 25, 2020. It aired on June 7 on Disney XD in America and on 9Go! in Australia, and became available on Hulu in America on the same day.

Gavin has been feeling unsure about whether he should acknowledge Rush Duels as legitimate or not. One morning, as part of his daily routine, he tried to predict his fortune by drawing a card. The card he drew was his ace monster, "Yamiruler the Dark Delayer". This gave him an idea...

Summary[edit]

Rayne narrates Gavin's morning routine; he rises early to arrive at Goha #7 Elementary's Student Council Office at 6:66:66 AM, draws a card for his daily fortune (drawing "Yamiruler the Dark Delayer"; in the dub Rayne declaes it should be a good day as he drew a good card), has a light jog in the school courtyard (specified to be 40 laps in the dub) meditates, and does calligraphy (straightening the camera as he does so, stated to be a hidden or "not so hidden" camera by Rayne in the dub) before checking his paperwork all before class starts. (In the dub, Rayne notes that it was just another normal day, or so Gavin thought.) As Rino holds a stack of paperwork for Gavin, Yuga comes into the office and he asks if Gavin can help him for a bit. Gavin asks what's happened all of a sudden, as he needs to authorize all of this paperwork (in the dub he tells Yuga he should have made an appointment and asks if this can't wait) but Yuga ignores Gavin's protests and drags him out of the room, much to Rayne and Rino's shock (Rayne vows to guard his desk while he's gone in the dub). In an empty classroom, Romin strums her guitar as Yuga runs in with Gavin and apologizes for the wait. Luke is pleased to see Gavin as he zooms in on his face with a video camera. Gavin asks what's going on, and Luke explains that they're doing a promotional video for Rush Dueling and they need Gavin to be the cameraman, while Yuga and Luke Duel with Romin's vocals in the background. Romin promptly protests that they didn't say anything about her singing; she's a guitarist, so singing is a no-go. Luke is shocked by Romin's refusal, but Yuga just nominates Gavin instead. Gavin frantically refuses, protesting that singing on your own is prohibited at school in the first place and the only thing they're allowed to sing is the school anthem. Luke suggests they just sing the anthem, and Yuga asks how it goes. Gavin is shocked that Yuga doesn't know it, and Yuga suggests Gavin sing it for them. (In the dub, Gavin cites Rule 474 that musical performances are forbidden without Student Council authorization, and Yuga points out that Gavin is Student Council, prompting Gavin to refuse to authorize it. Yuga thinks Gavin's just embarrassed, eventually convincing him to demonstrate.) Gavin clears his throat and stands tall, but his rendition of the Goha #7 Elementary School Song is completely off-key and causes everyone else significant discomfort; Luke can only ask if this is a song, while Kaizo is reduced to repeating "He's tone deaf". Romin flinches backwards and Gavin calls Kaizo out on his rudeness, protesting that they tried to make him sing. Gavin then realizes what time it is, and he asks them to excuse him, rushing off to stamp his paperwork before class...and then realizing that he's fast-walking in the hallway and lamenting that despite being the Student Council President, he's broken the rules (Rule 336 in the dub).

Rayne and Rino implore Gavin to remember his duties.

Later Gavin sits at his desk in the office with his Duel Monsters Deck in front of him (in the dub he has sentenced himself to self-detention) lamenting that he should be stopping the chaos that Yuga and the others cause, but lately he's been following their pace (imagining having fun Rush Dueling Yuga as he does so) and he wonders how he could do such a thing. Rayne and Rino both drop a stack of paperwork in front of Gavin and Rayne tells him that it's just as he said. Rino asks Gavin to look at the mountain of paperwork, and Rayne begs him not to be swayed by Rush Dueling and to return to his Student Council duties. Gavin agrees with them, declaring that he can't waver and will have to draw the line somewhere. His eye is drawn to his Deck again, with "Yamiruler" sitting on top and he picks the card up and realizes something.

A flustered Romin protests again that she won't sing for their promo video.

At lunchtime, Yuga, Luke and Romin are watching their promo video, depicting Yuga and Luke facing off and Luke declaring his turn, drawing, and Summoning "Dragon Bat", with a "7" graphic separating their versus splash designed after the Duel Disk. Luke thinks it's perfect and Yuga is pretty happy as well, but Romin is doubtful that anyone will see it, but she spits out her juice when she sees the "like" counter skyrocketing into the tens of thousands and she asks what's going on. Yuga explains that he turned Kaizo into a "Like-alotter"; Kaizo hovers above them tapping several "like" icons every second (yelping in the dub that he doesn't like this). Luke is appreciative, but Romin wonders what the point is (in the dub she snarks that the two of them are their biggest fans). Luke suggests that they used Romin's vocals to appeal to her fans, but Romin protests again that she won't sing. Yuga wonders if she's tone-deaf as well and Romin storms away from the seat with her back to them, protesting that's obviously not true. Luke suggests dancing instead, dancing elegantly while they Rush Duel, but while Yuga seems fond of the concept, Luke quickly remembers that he can't dance. Yuga thinks for a minute, and then he decides that he's got it.

Gavin declares that he will "stop the rules".

Gavin is eating his own lunch at the office when Yuga rushes in with Luke and Romin, asking if Gavin can change regulations so that they can Rush Duel for an hour and a half at school, and possibly change their anthem's lyrics to something cool that would get people excited for Rush Dueling. Gavin holds up his hand and shakes his head and Luke asks what happened. Rayne and Rino leap in to flank Gavin and Rayne declares that Gavin won't be playing along with them anymore. Gavin agrees; he's the Student Council President, so he doesn't have time for things like Rush Duels. He holds up "Yamiruler the Dark Delayer" and he claims to have realized something when he drew it that morning. Yuga asks what Gavin means, and Gavin explains that "Yamiruler" is his ace monster and is like his good luck charm, but Gavin misinterpreted his message and took it for granted, blind to the message it had been trying to tell him. Yuga and Luke (blinded by the message themselves) ask what that message is, and Gavin declares that it's to put a stop to Rush Dueling; to "stop the rules" ("yamero" means "stop" in Japanese, in the dub Gavin interprets the fortune as them delaying him from doing work; Romin isn't impressed by the horrible pun). Regardless, Gavin prohibits Rush Dueling on school grounds, and Luke angrily asks what Gavin is saying; isn't he part of "Team Luke"? (Romin has to tell him there's no team like that; in the dub, Luke tells Romin to tell Gavin he can't do that, and Romin refuses since Gavin is the president.) Yuga is unfazed, suggesting they have a final match between them; if Gavin wins, then he can prohibit Rush Dueling as he desires, but if Yuga wins... Luke cuts in, telling Gavin that he'll have to let them Rush Duel and step down as Student Council President. Gavin accepts their conditions, much to Rayne and Rino's shock, and Gavin and Yuga activate their Duel Disks, ready to Duel -

But then a student comes in, asking Gavin to review the month's School Beautification Poster (poster for the Comic Book Club in the dub). Gavin is taken aback, but agrees to the request and postpones the match until after school, much to Yuga's surprise. Gavin rushes out to fulfill his duties, Rayne and Rino on his heels. Romin asks Luke if he's going too far by making Gavin quit as Student Council President, but Luke states that it's a big chance to spread Rush Dueling, since if Gavin steps down, then of course Luke will be the next in line. Yuga and Romin leave him to his fantasy as Luke imagines being in Gavin's uniform but then wonders if jumping straight to Student Council President might be too difficult, perhaps he should start as Treasurer, then Secretary, then Vice-President...

Gavin is swamped with questions from the other students.

After school, Gavin is ready for his showdown with Yuga, but is immediately accosted upon leaving class with a request for advice on the month's recommended books from a Book Club member. Gavin admits that he has an important matter to attend to, but he'll prioritize his work as Student Council President. But then a bunch of students pop up to ask Gavin about topics from school regulations, to garbage bin installation, to school broadcasting, and as poor Gavin begs them to ask one at a time, a student in headgear tosses him a rugby ball, explaining that they're a player short. In their own class, Yuga asks Luke if he thinks that Gavin will come, and Luke wonders if he ran away. Romin points out that Gavin is playing rugby (in the dub she states that Gavin is running away, just not the way they think) and the boys join her at the window to see Gavin dodging opposing players in ripper rugby - still inundated with requests from the other students and still begging them to ask one at a time. Luke asks if this is all Gavin's work, and Yuga replies "Who knows" as Gavin is shown confirming safety conditions, dealing with a god in the restroom, and finally finishing as the sun begins to set. He, Rayne and Rino are all exhausted; Gavin only has 15 minutes before he goes home and he needs to hurry. He's tired, but he asks himself what he's saying, as this would be like running away from his match and he won't do so. He slaps his cheeks to stay awake and then speeds off (telling himself to watch his speed in the dub) with Rino calling after him and exchanging a worried glance with Rayne. Yuga, Luke and Romin are waiting in the Student Council Office; Yuga looking at his Deck, Romin playing on her phone, and Luke restlessly tapping his foot, and Gavin arrives with Rayne and Rino in tow, out of breath and apologizing for making them wait. Yuga asks if Gavin came running, and Gavin asks him to excuse this transgression of rules, as he had to attend to his duties and they got out of hand, but it's all right now (in the dub, Gavin claims to have been fast-walking under the speed limit, so he didn't break the rules).

They relocate to the dojo, where Yuga and Gavin stand on hexagonal mats, while Luke and Romin kneel on a spectator's mat, and Gavin tells them to let him show them the Sogetsu Style of Dueling. He calls Rayne and Rino's names, and the Vice-President and Secretary leap in wearing Kuroko clothing to flank Gavin, while Gavin himself grins and flings aside his uniform to reveal his kimono and mantle. Romin is surprised by their clothes, and Yuga grins that it's getting interesting. He calls "Let's go!" and Gavin asks him to allow him, and they activate their Duel Disks and call "Rush Duel!" The holographic dome extends around them.

Rayne draws Gavin's card for him as part of his Sogetsu Style.

Gavin declares his turn, but it's Rayne who draws his card - "Yamiruler the Dark Delayer" - for him. Romin is shocked, and Luke asks if the Vice President drew the card. Gavin confirms that she did; in his Sogetsu Style, he won't lift a finger, but the Kurokos will be his hands and manipulate the cards for him (in the dub he further explains it as acting as a commander and examining the entire field). He looks at the "Yamiruler" that Rayne drew (in the dub, she states her belief that Summoning it will lead to her victory), and thinks to himself, then Sets a monster. Rino takes the card from Rayne's hand and places it on Gavin's Duel Disk, which projects the card image in a road of light. Romin is confused at the notion of Gavin putting the card face-down, and Yuga notes that it's in Defense Position, so he won't know what it is until he attacks it. Gavin then Sets the "Scroll of Salutation" and "Shield & Sword" in his hand (which also contains "Yamiruler" and "Ancient Turtle Protector", "Scroll of Salutation"), and Romin asks if that's all, since Gavin can Summon more monsters. Luke suggests that Gavin didn't have them, and Rayne whispers to Gavin that he can Summon his ace "Yamiruler the Dark Delayer" and she asks why he didn't, but Gavin doesn't answer and he ends his turn, much to Yuga's surprise.

Yuga declares his turn and draws "Dark Sorcerer", adding it to his hand also containing "Fire Golem", "Whispering Fairy", "Straynge Cat", "Cyc the Child of Wind". He Summons "Dark Sorcerer", "Fire Golem" and "Whispering Fairy". He immediately orders "Dark Sorcerer" to attack, and Rino flips up Gavin's Set monster, another "Turtle Keeper of Ancient Traditions"; the holographic card flipping up and disgorging the monster, who flips around so that its shell faces Yuga. "Dark Sorcerer" destroys "Turtle Keeper" with a blast of purple magic, and Rino tells Yuga that he won't be inflicting any damage since he battled with a Defense Position monster. Luke points out that now Gavin has no more monsters, and Yuga attacks directly with both "Fire Golem" and "Whispering Fairy", reducing Gavin first to 2800, then to 2000 LP. Rino gasps that Gavin's LP dropped to 2000 in an instant. Rayne whispers that Gavin could have avoided the damage if he'd Summoned "Yamiruler" on his first turn, and she wonders when he didn't. Yuga ends his turn.

Gavin declares his turn, and Rayne draws three cards for him and holds up his hand; "Bonded Bowing", "Yamiruler the Dark Delayer", "Yurushima the Hermit", and two "Ancient Turtle Protector". He Sets two monsters, and thinks to himself that Tribute Summoning "Yamiruler" is his best move right now, but if he wins just like that... Rayne asks if Gavin is hesitating, is he perhaps thinking about how Rush Dueling will be prohibited after he wins? Gavin protests that he would never, and Rayne begs Gavin to Tribute Summon "Yamiruler", moving her hand to take the card for him, but Gavin stops her with his fan. Rino looks at them in worry, but is snapped out of it by Yuga laughing. Rino angrily asks if their bickering is amusing Yuga, and Yuga claims to just be enjoying the Duel, but didn't Gavin also want to enjoy this match? After all, he broke the rules by running to get here. Yuga tells the shocked Gavin that he's always wanted to have a match with Gavin as he's always been, a match with Gavin Sogetsu. (In the dub, Yuga admits his amusement regarding Gavin's hands-off Duel style considering his willingness to get his hands dirty when helping with schoolwork, and states he knows Gavin enjoys Rush Dueling as much as he does helping people.) Gavin grins and he agrees, asking Yuga to allow him to enjoy himself. He slides his fan into his sash and takes "Yamiruler" from Rayne, declaring that it's telling him to "stop" his doubts (in the dub, he declares proudly that he's touched his own card; once again, Romin and Luke aren't impressed by his pun). Gavin then takes his hand from Rayne, much to Rino's shock, and Gavin politely asks them to step back, before Tributing both of his Set "Turtle Protectors" to Tribute Summon, dramatically chanting "When the darkness threatens to overwhelm all that is right and just, this general rises to meet the challenge! Come forth! Yamiruler the Dark Delayer!" Romin gasps that it's strong; it has 2500 ATK and DEF. Yuga points out that his "Sevens Road Magician" can surpass that if it uses its effect, and Gavin wonders if things will go as Yuga says. He activates the Spell Card "Bonded Bowing", changing "Yamiruler" to Defense Position to draw a card. Romin asks why Gavin switched his Level 8 monster into Defense Position after just Summoning it. Gavin chuckles, telling them that they will soon know the reason.

He activates the "Delay Directive" effect of "Yamiruler", switching it to Attack Position. Rayne and Rino explain that "Yamiruler" can change its battle position to prevent Level 7 or higher monsters from being Tribute Summoned until the end of the opponent's next turn - in other words, Yuga will be unable to Summon the Level 7 "Sevens Road". Yuga gasps in shock, but Gavin warns him that it's too early to be surprised, and he Summons "Binding Chain", then Tributes it to Tribute Summon "Yurushima the Hermit". Romin protests that she thought the effect of "Yamiruler" prevented Tribute Summons, but Luke points out that "Yurushima" is Level 6 and is thus unaffected. Yuga wonders why Gavin Tribute Summoned a Level 6 monster, and Gavin notes that Yuga isn't aware of his intentions, so he'll make him aware. He activates his Set Spell Card "Shield & Sword". Rayne and Rino explain that it will switch the ATK and DEF of all monsters on the field until the end of the turn. "Yamiruler" has no change, but "Yurushima" rises to 2000 ATK, while "Fire Golem" falls to 800 ATK, "Dark Sorcerer" to zero ATK, and "Whispering Fairy" rises to 1200 ATK. Yuga asks what's up with that, and Gavin declares his Battle Phase, attacking "Fire Golem" with "Yurushima", destroying it and reducing Yuga to 2800 LP. Gavin warns Yuga that there's more, and he attacks "Dark Sorcerer" with "Yamiruler the Dark Delayer". "Yamiruler" unsheathes its katana and attacks with "Samurai Slash", destroying "Dark Sorcerer" with an energy slash and reducing Yuga to 300 LP. Romin cries out in worry and Luke gasps that Yuga's LP dropped to 300 in an instant. Gavin ends his turn, and the ATK and DEF of "Yurushima", "Yamiruler" and "Whispering Fairy" return to normal. Luke declares that Gavin has a great strategy, and Romin asks if this is the time to be praising it, does he think Yuga can make a comeback? (In the dub, Romin points out that Gavin is good at everything, and suggests he could be better than Luke.)

Yuga Summons "Sevens Road Witch" and "Sevens Road Magician" despite Gavin's efforts to prevent him.

Yuga chuckles, commenting that it's getting really fun, isn't it? He declares his turn and draws three cards, then Tributes "Whispering Fairy" to Tribute Summon "Sevens Road Witch", which emerges from a swirl of fire with 1600 ATK. Romin appears enchanted by the monster and Luke cheers that Yuga just needs to increase her ATK by 400 and attack "Yurushima" to reduce Gavin's LP to zero. Kaizo then pops in behind them, cheering likes, much to their surprise. Yuga grins that Level 6 monsters aren't affected by "Yamiruler", are they? Gavin praises Yuga's move, but warns him that it won't be that easy and he activates his Trap Card, "Scroll of Salutation". Once again, Rayne and Rino pop up to explain the card's effect; by returning one monster he controls to the hand, Gavin can change all monsters he controls to Defense Position, and he returns "Yurushima" to his hand, switching "Yamiruler" into Defense Position, who holds up his fan and greys out. Gavin asks how that was, and Yuga praises his move. Gavin thinks that Yuga won't be able to do anything as his ace has been blocked, but Yuga wonders about that. He sends a card from his hand to the Graveyard ("Straynge Cat") to activate the effect of "Sevens Road Witch", allowing him to Special Summon a Level 7 or higher DARK Spellcaster from his hand (which contains "Cyc", "Sevens Road Magician" and "Curtain of Sparks"). Gavin realizes what Yuga's Summoning, and Yuga grins, then declares the "Sevens Sorcery" effect of "Sevens Road Witch", who swings her staff and blast the yellow beam of light down on Yuga, who chants "A wall, a mountain, not even a planet can block my way! Nothing will stop my road to victory! Let's go! Sevens Road Magician!" Gavin gasps "What?" and Luke cheers that it's here. Romin asks what's going on, didn't Gavin block "Sevens Road" from being Summoned? Luke clarifies that Gavin only prevented it from being Tribute Summoned, but Yuga was able to Special Summon it. The term confuses Romin, and Luke explains that a Special Summon differs from a Tribute Summon; in this case, the Special Summon was due to the effect of "Witch". Yuga adds that if the monster that the effect of "Witch" Special Summoned was "Sevens Road Magician", then "Witch" will gain 400 ATK until the end of the turn.

Yuga also activates the effect of "Sevens Road Magician", sending "Hydro Magician" from the top of his Deck to the Graveyard to activate the "Elemental Road" effect of "Sevens Road Magician", increasing its ATK by 300 for every different Attribute in his Graveyard. Rino calculates that Yuga has five different Attributes in his Graveyard, so it will have 3600 ATK. "Sevens Road Magician" powers up, and Yuga orders it to attack "Yamiruler the Dark Delayer". It destroys "Yamiruler" with "Sevens Magic Attack", and then Yuga orders "Sevens Road Witch" to attack directly with "Sevens Slinger". She charges forwards and launches seven discs from her staff, enclosing Gavin in a pillar and shocking him with electricity, reducing his LP to zero as Rayne and Rino call his name. Gavin drops "Yurushima" as Yuga cheers that he won and the holographic dome disappears.

Immediately after stepping down as Student Council President, Gavin is reinstated in the emergency election.

Gavin and Yuga deactivate their Duel Disks, and Gavin contentedly states that he lost. Luke walks up, asking if they can freely Rush Duel at school now, and adding that he'll also have to give up his position as Student Council President. Yuga tells Gavin not to worry about that promise since Luke was just being selfish, deflating Luke, but Gavin states that a promise is a promise and he declares that he will step down from his position. Rayne and Rino gasp his name, and Gavin thanks them for everything so far as they tear up and hug him (in the dub he tells them to call him Gavin from now on...or better yet, their friend). Rayne then narrates that Gavin stopped being Student Council President, and they held an emergency election to decide the next term Student Council President...and Gavin defeated Luke in the election, resuming his duties as Student Council President. Yuga decided to help him out, turning Kaizo into a docu-stamper to stamp Gavin's paperwork. Gavin thanks Yuga; now he'll be able to watch over them as Student Council President without any worry, because they never know what kind of mess they'll get into without him around. Rayne and Rino jump down with a curtain and fan confetti over Gavin, calling his name proudly (in the dub, Luke also claims that wasn't too im-prezz-ive).

Featured Duel: Yuga Ohdo vs Gavin Sogetsu[edit]

Yuga VS Gavin.png

The Duel is conducted as a Rush Duel.

Turn 1: Gavin
Gavin draws "Yamiruler the Dark Delayer". Gavin Sets a monster. Gavin's hand contains "Ancient Turtle Protector", "Scroll of Salutation", "Shield & Sword", and "Yamiruler the Dark Delayer". Gavin Sets "Scroll of Salutation" and "Shield & Sword".

Turn 2: Yuga
Yuga draws "Dark Sorcerer". Yuga's hand contains "Fire Golem", "Whispering Fairy", "Straynge Cat", "Cyc the Child of Wind", and "Dark Sorcerer". Yuga Normal Summons "Fire Golem" (1200/800), "Whispering Fairy" (800/1200), and "Dark Sorcerer" (1500/0). "Dark Sorcerer" attacks Gavin's Set "Ancient Turtle Protector" (0/1400) and destroys it. "Fire Golem" and "Whispering Fairy" attack directly (Gavin: 4000 → 2800 → 2000 LP).

Turn 3: Gavin
Gavin's hand contains "Bonded Bowing", "Yamiruler the Dark Delayer", "Yurushima the Hermit", and 2 copies of "Ancient Turtle Protector". Gavin Sets two monsters. He then Tributes his two Set "Ancient Turtle Protector" to Tribute Summon "Yamiruler the Dark Delayer" (2500/2500). Gavin activates the Spell Card "Bonded Bowing", changing one Attack Position Warrior Type monster he controls to Defense Position and drawing a card. He changes "Yamiruler" to Defense Position. Gavin activates the effect of "Yamiruler"; as it was Normal Summoned this turn, he can change its battle position, then until the end of Yuga's next turn, neither player can Tribute Summon Level 7 or higher monsters. He changes "Yamiruler" to Attack Position. Gavin Normal Summons "Binding Chain" (1000/1200). Gavin Tributes "Binding Chain" to Tribute Summon "Yurushima the Hermit" (0/2000). Gavin activates his Set Spell Card "Shield & Sword", switching the original ATK and DEF of all face-up monsters on the field until the end of the turn ("Yamiruler": 2500/2500 → 2500/2500) ("Yurushima": 0/2000 → 2000/0) ("Whispering Fairy": 800/1200 → 1200/800) ("Fire Golem": 1200/800 → 800/1200) ("Dark Sorcerer": 1500/0 → 0/1500). "Yurushima" attacks and destroys "Fire Golem" (Yuga: 4000 → 2800 LP). "Yamiruler" attacks and destroys "Dark Sorcerer" (Yuga: 2800 → 300 LP)

Turn 4: Yuga
Yuga Tributes "Whispering Fairy" to Tribute Summon "Sevens Road Witch" (1600/1000). As Yuga Normal Summoned a monster while Gavin controls two Level 5 or higher monsters, Gavin activates his Set Trap Card "Scroll of Salutation", returning a monster he controls to his hand to change all Attack Position monsters he controls to face-up Defense Position. He returns "Yurushima" to his hand and changes "Yamiruler" to Defense Position. Yuga activates the effect of "Sevens Road Witch", sending a card from his hand to the Graveyard to Special Summon a Level 7 or higher DARK Attribute Spellcaster Type monster from his hand, and if he Special Summons "Sevens Road Magician", then "Sevens Road Witch" will gain 400 ATK until the end of the turn. Yuga sends "Straynge Cat" from his hand to his Graveyard and Special Summons "Sevens Road Magician" (2100/1500) in Attack Position ("Sevens Road Witch": 1600/1000 → 2000/1000). Yuga's hand contains "Cyc the Child of Wind" and "Curtain of Sparks". Yuga activates the effect of "Sevens Road Magician", sending the top card of his Deck to the Graveyard to increase its ATK by 300 for each different Attribute in his Graveyard until the end of the turn. He sends "Hydro Magician", so he has five Attributes in his Graveyard (FIRE, DARK, WIND, EARTH, and WATER) ("Sevens Road Magician": 2100/1500 → 3600/1500). "Sevens Road Magician" attacks and destroys "Yamiruler". "Sevens Road Witch" attacks directly (Gavin: 2000 → 0 LP).
