Black Magic (くろ Kuroma) is a Type. It is used in Duel Monsters in the Yu-Gi-Oh! and in the Bandai Yu-Gi-Oh! Carddass, but not in the OCG/TCG.

Black Magic refers to the dark arts of magic, specifically, the use of elemental forces, negative effects, necromancy, and generally anything that causes harm or hindrance to an opponent.

The manga also mentions Black Magician (黒魔術師), not suffixed with the word "Type", which might be considered the same thing.

The Dark Alignment, also known as Shadow, appearing in some video games is based on this Type and shares a Japanese name with it.

Manga and anime[edit]

Mentions as "Black Magic Type"[edit]

Sugoroku Mutou mentioned that "Magic Types" comprises four Types, each of which is strong against one of the others, including Black Magic, which is strong against White Magic and weak against Illusion (Illusion Magic).[1]

The cards "Coffin of Dark Resurrection" and "Thousand Knives" require a Black Magic-Type monster in order to use. "Dark Magician" was demonstrated to be such a monster in both cases.[2]

In the anime, this is maintained for "Dark Renewal" (English anime name for "Coffin of Dark Resurrection").[3]

Mentions as "Black Magician"[edit]

In the manga, "Nightmare Chains"[4] and "Dark Magic Curtain" mention Black Magician in their requirements,[5] with "Dark Magician"[4] and "Dark Magician Girl" demonstrated as fitting that criteria.[5]

In the anime, "Nightmare's Chains"[6] and "Dark Magic Curtain" mention Black Magician, as per the manga.[3] "Mystic Box" also mentions Black Magician in its text,[7] unlike the manga version whose text was blank.[8] And likewise "Dark Magician" and "Dark Magician Girl" were shown to work with these cards.[7][6][3]

Relation to the OCG/TCG[edit]

The manga's ideas of monster sub-types and distinct classes of magic users were not adapted directly into the card game produced by Konami or most media based on it. Of the four manga Magic Types, only Fiend was initially given its own monster Type, though Illusion followed when the OCG was already 25 years old. Otherwise all magic users are included in the general Spellcaster Type.

Black Magic as a concept did eventually evolve to be included in one notable capacity however: the "Dark Magician" archetype.
