(this note is unnecessary: people making the assumption that "all monsters of this Type are Illegal" == "this Type is Illegal" was on them; there was never any actual reason to draw that conclusion)

Type (種族 Shuzoku, lit. "tribe"; shortened to -zoku when used as a suffix) is a characteristic of Monster Cards in Yu-Gi-Oh! media and card games. It represents the monster's "biological" grouping, and are involved in card effects in the card games.

A Type (種族 Shuzoku, also written in text as the specific Type followed by 「族」), is a characteristic of a Monster Card. Each monster has one printed Type (although certain monsters might have an effect that treats them as a different Type, changes their Type, or gives them an additional Type(s)), such that monsters of the same Type can be grouped together (in a similar way to Attributes), and support cards can affect that specific Type of monster.

List
 +
The following Types have appeared throughout various games. The list is initially ordered roughly by first appearance of each Type.

There are 26 different Types in the OCG and TCG. There are 20 different Types since the inception, four extra types were added later in the game's history, and two of these are highly exclusive: the Divine-Beast-Type is shared only by the Egyptian Gods; and the Creator God-Type is exclusive to "Holactie the Creator of Light".
+
The "debut" column refers to when the Type was first mentioned by name.

There are 29 different Types in Yu-Gi-Oh! Rush Duel; Illusion, Divine-Beast and Creator God don't appear, while six new Types (Cyborg, High Dragon, Magical Knight, Celestial Warrior, Omega Psychic, and Galaxy) have appeared, the first five being added exclusively for certain Fusion Monsters.
+
The "manga" column only refers to Duel Monsters in the Yu-Gi-Oh!, Yu-Gi-Oh! R, and Yu-Gi-Oh! GX series, as later entries fully match the Type roster of the OCG.

There is also Immortal, which only appears in Yu-Gi-Oh! The Duelists of the Roses. Cards that were introduced in that game as Immortal-Type monsters were given one of the 20 Types of that time when they were added to the OCG/TCG.
+
The "DDM" column refers to the real-world, manga, and video-game versions of Dungeon Dice Monsters.

From "Starter Deck: Link Strike" onward, the word "-Type" was removed from card texts. However, its OCG counterpart retains the word 族. Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links uses "-Type" in most cards' texts, even in texts that never included it in the TCG, and the international release of Yu-Gi-Oh! RUSH DUEL: Dawn of the Battle Royale!! uses "Type" without the hyphen in card texts (including removing the hyphen from the flavor text of "Summoned Skull") as well as "Attribute", even though "Attribute" was never used in that way in TCG texts.

Rush Duel
+
Non-game Types
Yu-Gi-Oh! Rush Duel has featured all Types from the OCG/TCG except for Illusion, Divine-Beast and Creator God. Rush Duel also features a new Type, Galaxy (ギャラクシー), introduced in Yu-Gi-Oh! GO RUSH!! by Yudias Velgear. Additionally, Fusion Monsters in Rush Duel introduce several new Types that are thematically fusions of other Types in the OCG/TCG:
+
These Types are only mentioned in cards not intended for use in Duels, so they are only meant as tongue-in-cheek references and are not considered valid for gameplay purposes (even if those cards are printed in real life), such as for card effects that require the player to declare a Type's name.
* Celestial Warrior (戦士): a Fusion of a Warrior and a Fairy Type.
+
* Human (人間 Ningen) is the Type used for "Everyone's King", a card appearing in a fantasy Carly Carmine had in the Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's anime. It was released as a non-game card in the OCG/TCG, where it maintained this Type.
* Cyborg (サイボーグ): a Fusion of a Machine and a non-Machine Type.
+
* Charisma (カリスマ Karisuma) is a Type used as a joke on "Charisma Token".
* High Dragon (ハイドラゴン): a Fusion of two Dragon Types.
+
* ? is used on some Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links Token cards to indicate the Token's Type is variable. (See also: List of ?-Type monsters)
* Magical Knight (): a Fusion of a Spellcaster and another Type, typically a Warrior Type.
+
* In the Yu-Gi-Oh! SEVENS anime, the Newspaper Club used a card-printing machine to create their own cards with their own original Types and Attributes. The Types included:
* Omega Psychic (オメガサイキック): a Fusion of two Psychic Types.
+
** Business (ビジネス Bijinesu) for "The★Luke Division Manager"
 +
** Newspaper ( Shinbun) for "Masa on the Mic" and "Cub the Picture Popping Paparazzi"
 +
** Swindler ( Sagi) for "Tracker the Ultimate Treasure Hunter"
 +
** Son ( Musuko) for "Good Yosh the Overcrusher"
 +
** Swirls (グルグル Guruguru) for "Adorable Newbie Swirls"

The Magical Knight Type first appeared in Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel 37: , when Dark Yugi Summoned "Gaia the Fierce Knight" and Seto Kaiba commented that it was "the strongest card in the Magical Knight Type". For the English release of the manga, Viz Media translated it as Warrior instead, and when "Gaia" was printed in the OCG, its Type was changed to Warrior.
+
Card text
 +
In the OCG and TCG, when a Type is mentioned in a card text, it is suffixed with "-Type". From Starter Deck: Link Strike onward, this was dropped in the TCG.
 +
Western versions of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links use "-Type" in most cards' texts, even some that were printed after Link Strike and never included it in TCG.

?
+
The international versions of Rush Duel cards in Yu-Gi-Oh! RUSH DUEL: Dawn of the Battle Royale!! and Duel Links do not use the hyphen, including the flavor text of the Normal Monster "Summoned Skull".
List of ?-Type monsters

? is used for some Monster Tokens in some mediums to indicate the Token's Type is variable.

???
+
Rush Duel
List of ???-Type monsters
+
There are 29 different Types in Yu-Gi-Oh! Rush Duel; they include all Types from the OCG/TCG, except for Illusion, Divine-Beast, and Creator God.
??? is used to indicate that a monster's Type is unknown; in the OCG/TCG it is only used for newly-announced monsters whose Type has not yet been revealed.

Other
+
Five of these types (all newly-added ones) are exclusive to certain Fusion Monsters, which are thematically fusions of other Types:
* Human (人間) is used on the non-game card "King of All"
+
* Celestial Warrior (Warrior + Fairy)
* Charisma (カリスマ) is a Type used only as a joke, on "Charisma Token".
+
* Cyborg (Machine + non-Machine)
 +
* High Dragon (Dragon + Dragon)
 +
* Magical Knight (Spellcaster + non-Spellcaster)
 +
* Omega Psychic (Psychic + Psychic)

Several one-off Types have appeared in the anime:
+

Latest revision as of 22:28, 19 April 2024

Various monsters of the Beast-, Beast-Warrior-, and Winged Beast Types in the artwork of "The Big Cattle Drive".

Type (しゅぞく Shuzoku, lit. "tribe"; shortened to ぞく -zoku when used as a suffix) is a characteristic of Monster Cards in Yu-Gi-Oh! media and card games. It represents the monster's "biological" grouping, and are involved in card effects in the card games.

In the North American English version of Yu-Gi-Oh! Dark Duel Stories, Type is referred to as Class, abbreviated to Cl. This is changed to Type and Tp respectively in the European English version.[n 1]

List[edit]

The following Types have appeared throughout various games. The list is initially ordered roughly by first appearance of each Type.

The "debut" column refers to when the Type was first mentioned by name.

The "manga" column only refers to Duel Monsters in the Yu-Gi-Oh!, Yu-Gi-Oh! R, and Yu-Gi-Oh! GX series, as later entries fully match the Type roster of the OCG.

The "DDM" column refers to the real-world, manga, and video-game versions of Dungeon Dice Monsters.

Non-game Types[edit]

These Types are only mentioned in cards not intended for use in Duels, so they are only meant as tongue-in-cheek references and are not considered valid for gameplay purposes (even if those cards are printed in real life), such as for card effects that require the player to declare a Type's name.

Card text[edit]

In the OCG and TCG, when a Type is mentioned in a card text, it is suffixed with "-Type". From Starter Deck: Link Strike onward, this was dropped in the TCG. Western versions of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links use "-Type" in most cards' texts, even some that were printed after Link Strike and never included it in TCG.

The international versions of Rush Duel cards in Yu-Gi-Oh! RUSH DUEL: Dawn of the Battle Royale!! and Duel Links do not use the hyphen, including the flavor text of the Normal Monster "Summoned Skull".

Rush Duel[edit]

There are 29 different Types in Yu-Gi-Oh! Rush Duel; they include all Types from the OCG/TCG, except for Illusion, Divine-Beast, and Creator God.

Five of these types (all newly-added ones) are exclusive to certain Fusion Monsters, which are thematically fusions of other Types:
