Playmaker and Varis' second Master Duel

Playmaker and Varis' second Master Duel is the nineteenth Duel of the Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS anime, and is the fourth time Playmaker and Varis have Dueled.

Prior events[edit]

After their Speed Duel, Yusaku and Kolter confronted Ryoken at his home, where Ryoken told Yusaku about the story behind the Lost Incident. Yusaku and Ryoken then had a rematch atop the Tower of Hanoi, to determine the fate of Link VRAINS.

The Duel[edit]

Turn 1: Varis
Varis activates the Field Spell Card "Boot Sector Launch". The effect of "Boot Sector Launch" increases the ATK and DEF of all "Rokket" monsters he controls by 300. Varis activates the effect of "Boot Sector Launch", Special Summoning up to two "Rokket" monsters with different names from his hand in Defense Position. He Special Summons "Shelrokket Dragon" (1100/2000 → 1400/2300) and "Metalrokket Dragon" (1700/1400 → 2000/1700). Varis Normal Summons "Sniffer Dragon" (800/400). As "Sniffer Dragon" was Normal or Special Summoned, Varis activates its effect, adding another copy of "Sniffer Dragon" from his Deck to his hand. Varis uses "Sniffer Dragon", "Shelrokket" and "Metalrokket" to Link Summon "Vorticular Drumgon" (1000/←↓→) to the Extra Monster Zone. As "Vorticular Drumgon" was Special Summoned, Varis activates its effect, drawing a card. Varis activates the Spell Card Link Coin, sending a Link Monster he controls to the GY to excavate cards from the top of his Deck, equal to the sent monster's Link Rating, then add an excavated card to his hand and place the rest on the top of his Deck in any order. During Varis' next Standby Phase, the Link Monster sent to the GY to activate this effect is Special Summoned. He sends the Link-3 "Vorticular Drumgon", excavates the top three cards of his Deck, adds "Mirror Force" to his hand, and returns the rest to the top of his Deck. Varis Sets a card.

Turn 2: Playmaker
As Playmaker controls no monsters, he Special Summons "Linkslayer" (2000/600) from his hand by its own effect. Playmaker activates the effect of "Linkslayer", discarding up to two cards to destroy that many Spell/Trap Cards on the field. He discards "Latency" to destroy Varis' Set card. As the Set "Mirror Force Launcher" was destroyed by Playmaker's card effect and sent to the GY, Varis activates its effect, Setting it and a "Mirror Force" from his hand, Deck, or GY. The cards Set by this effect can be activated this turn. He Sets "Mirror Force Launcher" and "Mirror Force" from his hand. Playmaker Normal Summons "ROM Cloudia" (1800/0). As "ROM Cloudia" was Normal Summoned, Playmaker activates its effect, adding a Cyberse monster from his GY to his hand. He adds "Latency" to his hand. As "Latency" was added from the GY to Playmaker's hand, he activates its effect, Special Summoning it (0/0). Playmaker uses "ROM Cloudia" and "Latency" to Link Summon "Restoration Point Guard" (1000/←↙) to the Extra Monster Zone. As "Latency" that was Special Summoned by its own effect was sent to the GY as Link Material, Playmaker activates its effect, drawing a card. Playmaker uses "Linkslayer" and the Link-2 "Restoration Point Guard" to Link Summon "Excode Talker" (2300/←↑→) to the Extra Monster Zone. As "Excode Talker" was Link Summoned, Playmaker activates its effect, choosing unused Main Monster Zones equal to the number of monsters currently in the Extra Monster Zones and preventing them from being used while "Excode Talker" is face-up on the field. He chooses one of Varis' Main Monster Zones.

"Excode Talker" attacks Varis directly. As Playmaker's monster declared an attack, Varis activates his face-down Trap Card "Mirror Force", destroying all Playmaker's Attack Position monsters. "Excode Talker" is destroyed. As a Link Monster Playmaker controls was destroyed by Varis' card effect while "Restoration Point Guard" was in the GY because it was sent there this turn as material for a Link Summon, Playmaker activates its effect, Special Summoning it (1000/←↙). "Restoration Point Guard" attacks Varis directly (Varis: 4000 → 3000 LP).

Turn 3: Varis
During the Standby Phase, "Vorticular Drumgon" that was sent to the GY to activate the effect of "Link Coin" is Special Summoned (1000/←↓→). As "Vorticular Drumgon" was Special Summoned, Varis activates its effect, drawing a card. Varis Normal Summons "Sniffer Dragon" (800/400). As "Sniffer Dragon" was Normal or Special Summoned, Varis activates its effect, adding another copy of "Sniffer Dragon" from his Deck to his hand. Varis uses "Sniffer Dragon" and the Link-3 "Vorticular Drumgon" to Link Summon "Topologic Bomber Dragon" (3000/↑↙↓↘) to the Extra Monster Zone. Varis activates the Equip Spell Card "Borrel Regenerator", Special Summoning a "Rokket" monster from his GY in Defense Position and equipping it with "Borrel Regenerator", but it is banished when "Borrel Regenerator" leaves the field. He Special Summons "Metalrokket" (1700/1400 → 2000/1700) to a zone "Topologic Bomber Dragon" points to and equips "Borrel Regenerator" to it. As a monster was Special Summoned to a zone a Link Monster points to while "Topologic Bomber Dragon" is on the field, its effect activates, destroying all monsters in the Main Monster Zones, but Varis' other monsters cannot attack for the rest of this turn. If another Link Monster was Link Summoned, the effect of "Restoration Point Guard" prevents it from being destroyed by battle or card effects for the rest of the turn. "Metalrokket" is destroyed. As "Borrel Regenerator" was sent to the GY because the equipped monster is destroyed, Varis activates its effect, drawing a card.

"Topologic Bomber Dragon" attacks "Restoration Point Guard". During damage calculation, a Varis' monster attacks an Attack Position Cyberse monster, Playmaker activates the effect of "Rescue Interlacer" in his hand, discarding it to prevent him from taking battle damage from that battle. The attack continues, but "Restoration Point Guard" is not destroyed. After damage calculation, as "Topologic Bomber Dragon" attacked Playmaker's monster, its effect activates, inflicting damage to Playmaker equal to that monster's original ATK (Playmaker: 4000 → 3000 LP). Varis activates his face-down Continuous Trap Card "Mirror Force Launcher", and subsequently activates its effect, sending a card from his hand to the GY to add a "Mirror Force" from his Deck or GY to his hand. Varis Sets two cards. During the End Phase, as "Metalrokket" is in the GY because it was destroyed on the field by battle or card effect and sent there this turn, Varis activates its effect, Special Summoning a "Rokket" monster with a different name from his Deck. He Special Summons "Magnarokket Dragon" (1800/1200 → 2100/1500). As the effect of "Rescue Interlacer" was activated this turn and was not negated, Playmaker activates its effect, Special Summoning it from the GY (1000/1200).

Turn 4: Playmaker
Playmaker uses "Rescue Interlacer" and the Link-2 "Restoration Point Guard" to Link Summon "Transcode Talker" (2300/↑→↓) to the Extra Monster Zone. Playmaker activates the effect of "Transcode Talker", Special Summoning a "Code Talker" monster from his GY to his zone "Transcode Talker" points to. He Special Summons "Excode Talker" (2300/←↑→) to the zone the bottom-center Link Arrow of "Transcode Talker" points to. The effect of "Excode Talker" increases the ATK of all monsters it points to by 500 and prevents them from being destroyed by card effects ("Transcode Talker": 2300 → 2800 ATK). As a monster was Special Summoned to a zone a Link Monster points to while "Topologic Bomber Dragon" is on the field, its effect activates, destroying all monsters in the Main Monster Zones, but as a card or effect is activated that would destroy a monster on the field, Playmaker activates his face-down Trap Card "Shield Handler", negating the effects of a Link Monster Varis controls and equipping "Shield Handler" to a Link Monster he controls, preventing it from being destroyed by card effects. He negates the effects of "Topologic Bomber Dragon" and equips "Shield Handler" to "Excode Talker". As "Transcode Talker" is co-linked, it and monsters co-linked to it gain 500 ATK ("Excode Talker": 2300 → 2800 ATK, "Transcode Talker": 2800 → 3300 ATK). Playmaker activates the effect of "SIMM Tablir", revealing it in his hand to Special Summon it from his hand to a zone a co-linked Link Monster he controls points to, then returning a Level 4 or lower Cyberse monster from his hand to his hand. He Special Summons "SIMM Tablir" (0/1800) to the zone the middle-right Link Arrow of "Excode Talker" points to, then returns the Level 4 "ROM Cloudia" from his GY to his hand ("SIMM Tablir": 0 → 500 ATK). Playmaker Normal Summons "ROM Cloudia" (1800/0). As "ROM Cloudia" was Normal Summoned, Playmaker activates its effect, adding "Latency" from his GY to his hand. As "Latency" was added from the GY to Playmaker's hand, he activates its effect, Special Summoning it (0/0). Playmaker uses "SIMM Tablir", "ROM Cloudia" and "Latency" to Link Summon "Powercode Talker" (2300/←↙→) to the zone the middle-left Link Arrow of "Excode Talker" points to ("Powercode Talker": 2300 → 2800 ATK). As "Latency" that was Special Summoned by its own effect was sent to the GY as Link Material, Playmaker activates its effect, drawing a card.

"Powercode Talker" attacks and destroys "Magnarokket Dragon". "Transcode Talker" attacks "Topologic Bomber Dragon". Varis activates the Continuous Trap Card "Link Turret", preventing Varis' Link Monsters from being destroyed by battle for the rest of the turn and sending two "Rokket" monsters from his Deck to the GY, then placing a Rokket Counter on "Link Turret" for each Link-3 or higher monster on the field. He sends two unknown "Rokket" cards[Notes 1] and places four Rokket Counters on "Link Turret" for the four Link-3 or higher monsters on the field ("Link Turret": 0 → 4 Rokket Counters). The attack continues, but "Topologic Bomber Dragon" is not destroyed (Varis: 3000 → 2700 LP). The effect of "Link Turret" places a Rokket Counter on itself each time Varis takes battle damage ("Link Turret": 4 → 5 Rokket Counters). Playmaker Sets a card. During the End Phase, as "Magnarokket" is in the GY because it was destroyed on the field by battle or card effect and sent there this turn, Varis activates its effect, Special Summoning a "Rokket" monster with a different name from his Deck. He Special Summons "Autorokket Dragon" (1600/1000 → 1900/1300).

Turn 5: Varis
Varis draws and subsequently activates the Quick-Play Spell Card "Squib Draw", destroying a "Rokket" monster he controls, then drawing two cards. He destroys "Autorokket" and draws two cards. As Playmaker controls more monsters than him, Varis activates the effect of "Boot Sector Launch", Special Summoning "Rokket" monsters with different names from his GY, up to the difference in number of monsters. Playmaker controls two more monsters than him, so he Special Summons "Shelrokket" (1100/2000 → 1400/2300) and "Metalrokket" (1700/1400 → 2000/1700). Varis uses "Shelrokket" and "Metalrokket" to Link Summon "Miniborrel Dragon" (800/←→) to a zone a Link Arrow of "Topologic Bomber Dragon" points to. Varis Normal Summons "Gateway Dragon" (1600/1400). Varis activates the effect of "Gateway Dragon", Special Summoning a Level 4 or lower DARK Dragon monster from his hand. He Special Summons "Sniffer Dragon" (800/400). Varis uses "Gateway Dragon", "Sniffer Dragon" and "Miniborrel Dragon" to Link Summon "Borreload Dragon" (3000/←↙↘→) to the zone the bottom-left Link Arrow of "Topologic Bomber Dragon" points to. Varis activates the effect of "Borreload Dragon", decreasing the ATK and DEF of a face-up monster on the field by 500. He targets "Powercode Talker" ("Powercode Talker": 2800 → 2300 ATK).

"Borreload Dragon" attacks "Transcode Talker". At the start of the Damage Step, as "Borreload Dragon" is attacking Playmaker's monster, Varis activates its effect, placing that monster in a zone "Borreload Dragon" points to, and he gains control of it. He places "Transcode Talker" in the zone the middle-right Link Arrow of "Borreload Dragon" points to ("Transcode Talker": 3300 → 2300 ATK, "Excode Talker": 2800 → 2300 ATK). As "Transcode Talker" is co-linked, it and monsters co-linked to it gain 500 ATK ("Topologic Bomber Dragon": 3000 → 3500 ATK, "Transcode Talker": 2300 → 2800 ATK). "Topologic Bomber Dragon" attacks and destroys "Excode Talker" (Playmaker: 3000 → 1800 LP, "Powercode Talker": 2300 → 1800 ATK). "Transcode Talker" attacks and destroys "Powercode Talker" (Playmaker: 1800 → 800 LP).

As Varis controls a "Borrel" Link Monster while "Miniborrel Dragon" in his GY, he activates its effect, Tributing a Link-3 monster to Special Summon it. He Tributes "Transcode Talker" to Special Summon it (800/←→) ("Topologic Bomber Dragon": 3500 → 3000 ATK). During Varis' Main Phase 2, he activates the effect of "Link Turret", removing a Rokket Counter from it, then Special Summoning a "Rokket" monster from his GY in Defense Position, but its effects are negated and it is banished when it leaves the field. He activates this effect twice, removing two Rokket Counters ("Link Turret": 5 → 3 Rokket Counters) to Special Summon "Metalrokket" (1700/1400 → 2000/1700) and "Shelrokket" (1100/2000 → 1400/2300). Varis uses "Shelrokket", "Metalrokket" and the Link-2 "Miniborrel Dragon" to Link Summon "Borrelguard Dragon" (3000/↑↓↘→) to the zone the middle-left Link Arrow of "Borreload Dragon" points to. Varis activates the effect of "Borrelguard Dragon", sending a card from his Spell & Trap Zone to the GY to Special Summon from either GY to his field, a monster that was destroyed by battle and sent there this turn, but its effects are negated, also it is destroyed during the End Phase. He sends "Mirror Force Launcher" to the GY to Special Summon "Powercode Talker" (2300/←↙→). As Varis controls a "Borrel" Link Monster while "Miniborrel Dragon" in his GY, he activates its effect, Tributing "Powercode Talker" to Special Summon it (800/←→). Varis activates the effect of "Link Turret" twice, removing two Rokket Counters ("Link Turret": 3 → 1 Rokket Counter) to Special Summon "Magnarokket" (1800/1200 → 2100/1500) and "Shelrokket" (1100/2000 → 1400/2300). Varis uses "Magnarokket", "Shelrokket" and the Link-2 "Miniborrel Dragon" to Link Summon "Borrelsword Dragon" (3000/←↙↓↑) to the zone the bottom-center Link Arrow of "Topologic Bomber Dragon" points to. Varis activates the effect of "Borrelguard Dragon", sending "Mirror Force" from his Spell & Trap Zone to the GY to Special Summon "Excode Talker" (2300/←↑→). Varis activates the effect of "Link Turret", removing a Rokket Counter ("Link Turret": 1 → 0 Rokket Counters) to Special Summon "Anesthrokket Dragon" (0/2200 → 300/2500).

Varis uses "Anesthrokket" and the Link-3 "Excode Talker" to Link Summon "Topologic Gumblar Dragon" (3000/↑←↓→) to the second Extra Monster Zone, creating an Extra Link. As "Topologic Gumblar Dragon" is Extra Linked and Playmaker has at least one card in his hand, Varis activates its effect, destroying as many cards in Playmaker's hand as possible and inflicting 3000 damage to Playmaker, also this effect cannot be negated, but as Varis activated a card or effect that would inflict damage, Playmaker activates his face-down Continuous Trap Card "Drop Frame Wedge", sending a card from his hand to the GY to halve the damage, then Playmaker can send another card from his hand to the GY to further halve the damage. He sends two unknown cards[Notes 2] from his hand to the GY to quarter the damage (Playmaker: 800 → 50 LP). The effect of "Drop Frame Wedge" prevents monsters on the field from attacking. During the End Phase after activation, "Drop Frame Wedge" is destroyed, but as two cards were sent to the GY with its effect, it will be destroyed during the second End Phase after activation instead. During the End Phase, as "Autorokket" is in the GY because it was destroyed on the field by battle or card effect and sent there this turn, Varis activates its effect, Special Summoning a "Rokket" monster with a different name from his Deck. He Special Summons "Magnarokket" (1800/1200 → 2100/1500). During the End Phase, as there are no Rokket Counters on "Link Turret", its effect activates, sending it to the GY.

Turn 6: Playmaker
Playmaker Sets a card.[Notes 3]

Turn 7: Varis
Varis Normal Summons "Autorokket" (1600/1000 → 1900/1300). Varis activates the effect of "Borreload Dragon", decreasing the ATK and DEF of "Autorokket" by 500, but as a Link Monster's effect is activated that targets the face-up "Autorokket" on the field, Varis activates its effect, destroying it to send a Spell/Trap Card on the field to the GY. He sends Playmaker's Set card. Varis Sets a card. During the End Phase, as "Autorokket" is in the GY because it was destroyed on the field by battle or card effect and sent there this turn, Varis activates its effect, Special Summoning "Anesthrokket" from his Deck (0/2200 → 300/2500).

Turn 8: Playmaker
As there are two Link Monsters with the same Link Rating in the Extra Monster Zones, Playmaker activates the Spell Card "Arrow Charge", drawing two cards and revealing them, but they are banished during the End Phase of the turn, if they are still in Playmaker's hand. He draws "Disconnect Linker" and "Transaction Rollback". Playmaker activates the Spell Card "Disconnect Linker", Special Summoning a Link-2 or lower monster from his GY with its effects negated, then, immediately after this effect resolves, Link Summoning using that monster as material. The Link Summoned Link Monster is unaffected by Varis' card effects, and monsters in the Extra Monster Zones cannot attack while it is face-up on the field. Playmaker Special Summons "Restoration Point Guard" (1000/←↙) and uses it to Link Summon "Secure Gardna" (1000/→) to a zone a Link Monster points to. Playmaker Sets "Transaction Rollback". As it is the second of Playmaker's End Phases after "Drop Frame Wedge" was activated, it is destroyed by its own effect.

Turn 9: Varis
"Borreload Dragon" attacks "Secure Gardna". Varis activates the effect of "Borreload Dragon", decreasing the ATK and DEF of "Secure Gardna" by 500, however "Secure Gardna" that was Link Summoned with the effect of "Disconnect Linker" is unaffected by Varis' card effects. As Playmaker's Cyberse Link Monster would be destroyed by battle, he activates the effect of "Protection Wizard" in his GY, banishing it instead. As Playmaker would take battle or effect damage, the effect of "Secure Gardna" reduces that damage to 0. The attack continues, but "Secure Gardna" is not destroyed. "Borrelsword Dragon" attacks "Secure Gardna". Varis activates the effect of "Borrelsword Dragon", changing an Attack Position monster on the field to Defense Position, also "Borrelsword Dragon" can make a second attack during each Battle Phase this turn. He targets "Magnarokket", but as a Link Monster's effect is activated that targets the face-up "Magnarokket" on the field, Varis activates its effect, destroying it to send a monster on the field to the GY. He sends "Anesthrokket". During the Battle Step, as a Link Monster Playmaker controls is attacked, he activates the effect of "Cluster Congester" in his GY, banishing it and that Link Monster to Special Summon "Congester Tokens", up to the number of Link Monsters Varis controls, also monsters on the field cannot activate their effects for the rest of this turn. During Varis' End Phase, these "Congester Tokens" are destroyed, then Varis takes 300 damage for each "Congester Token" destroyed by this effect. He banishes "Cluster Congester" from his GY and "Secure Gardna" from his field to Special Summon five "Congester Tokens" (0/0) in Defense Position for the five Link Monsters Varis controls. A replay occurs and "Borrelsword Dragon" attacks and destroys a "Congester Token". "Borrelsword Dragon" attacks another "Congester Token". Playmaker activates his face-down Trap Card "Transaction Rollback", paying half his LP to target a Normal Trap in Varis' GY, then this effect of "Transaction Rollback" becomes the that Normal Trap's activated effect (Playmaker: 50 → 25 LP). He targets "Mirror Force" in Varis' GY, destroying all Varis' Attack Position monsters, but while "Topologic Gumblar Dragon" is Extra Linked, Link Monsters Varis controls cannot be destroyed by card effects. The attack continues and the "Congester Token" is destroyed. "Borrelguard Dragon", "Topologic Bomber Dragon" and "Topologic Gumblar Dragon" attack and destroy the three "Congester Tokens". During the End Phase, as "Magnarokket" is in the GY because it was destroyed on the field by battle or card effect and sent there this turn, Varis activates its effect, Special Summoning "Autorokket" (1600/1000 → 1900/1300).

Turn 10: Playmaker
Playmaker activates the effect of "Transaction Rollback" in his GY, banishing it and paying half your LP to target a Normal Trap in his GY then this effect of "Transaction Rollback" becomes that Normal Trap's activated effect (Playmaker: 25 → 13 LP). He targets "Recoded Alive", banishing a Link-3 Cyberse Link Monster he controls or in his GY to Special Summon a "Code Talker" monster from his Extra Deck. He banishes "Transcode Talker" to Special Summon "Encode Talker" (2300/↑↓↘) from his Extra Deck to the zone the top-center Link Arrow of "Topologic Gumblar Dragon" points to. As a monster was Special Summoned to a zone a Link Monster points to while "Topologic Gumblar Dragon" is on the field and Varis has at least one card in his hand, its effect activates, destroying all cards in each player's hand. As "Spam Mail" was sent from the hand, Deck, or field to the GY by a card effect, Playmaker activates its effect, drawing a card, revealing it, then if Varis controls a face-up card of that type of card, he returns one of them to the hand. He draws the Monster Card "Swap Cleric" and reveals it, then Varis returns "Autorokket" to his hand. Playmaker Normal Summons "Swap Cleric" (500/1000). As Playmaker controls no monsters in his Extra Monster Zone, he activates the effect of "Recoded Alive" in his GY, banishing it to Special Summon one of his banished "Code Talker" monsters. He Special Summons the banished "Transcode Talker" (2300/↑→↓) to the zone the top-center Link Arrow of "Topologic Bomber Dragon" points to. As "Transcode Talker" is co-linked, it and monsters co-linked to it gain 500 ATK ("Topologic Bomber Dragon": 3000 → 3500 ATK, "Transcode Talker": 2300 → 2800 ATK). As a monster was Special Summoned to a zone a Link Monster points to while "Topologic Gumblar Dragon" is on the field and Varis has at least one card in his hand, its effect activates, destroying all cards in each player's hand. Playmaker activates the effect of "Transcode Talker", Special Summoning "Powercode Talker" (2300/←↙→) to the zone its middle-right Link Arrow points to ("Powercode Talker": 2300 → 2800 ATK).

Playmaker uses "Swap Cleric" and the Link-3 "Encode Talker" to Link Summon "Firewall Dragon" (2500/↑←↓→) to the zone the middle-right Link Arrow of "Powercode Talker" points to, creating a second Extra Link. As "Swap Cleric" was sent to the GY as Link Material, Playmaker activates its effect, reducing the ATK of that Link Monster by 500, then drawing a card. He draws and subsequently activates the Continuous Spell Card "Zero Extra Link", targeting a Link Monster he controls that is co-linked to a Link Monster in the Extra Monster Zone and increasing its ATK by 800 for each Extra Linked monster. He targets "Transcode Talker" ("Transcode Talker": 2800 → 9200 ATK). As Playmaker controls at least as many Link Monsters as monsters in Varis' Main Monster Zones, Varis activates his face-down Trap Card "Link Short", preventing co-linked monsters Playmaker currently controls from attacking, also they have their effects negated. Playmaker uses "Transcode Talker", "Powercode Talker" and "Firewall Dragon" to Link Summon "Decode Talker" (2300/↙↑↘) to the zone the top-center Link Arrow of "Topologic Bomber Dragon" points to ("Topologic Bomber Dragon": 3500 → 3000 ATK). The effect of "Decode Talker" increases its ATK by 500 for each monster it points to ("Decode Talker": 2300 → 2800 ATK). As a Link Monster is Link Summoned using the monster targeted by the effect of "Zero Extra Link" as material while it was Extra Linked, its effect activates, increasing that Link Monster's ATK by the same ATK increase that the targeted monster had, until the end of this turn ("Decode Talker": 2800 → 9200 ATK).

"Decode Talker" attacks and destroys "Borreload Dragon" (Varis: 2700 → 0 LP).

Aftermath[edit]

As Playmaker won the Duel, the Tower of Hanoi was shut down. All the victims that were caught and turned into data for the tower were returned, and begin to awaken in the real world. With his revenge completed, and past revealed to him, Yusaku frees Ai from his Duel Disk and allows him to return to his homeworld.
