In Reshef of Destruction, the Divine Type was given to monsters so that they would not be affected by the game's standard type system, which caused monsters of certain types to automatically destroy monsters of certain types. Any cards that target "''light type''" monsters may also target Divine-Beasts (this might have been applied in some video games, but it does not apply to real game play). For example, "Kaiser Sea Horse's" effect applies to the summoning of Divine-Beast-Type monsters. Also, contrary to popular belief, the Divine type is just as Susceptible to card effects as any other monster, not including monsters with the ability in their effect not to be affected by said effects.

The Winged Dragon of Ra
"The Winged Dragon of Ra", a Divine-Beast monster.

Divine-Beast (Japanese: げんしんじゅう Genshinjū, "Phantom God Beast"), simply called God (Japanese: かみ Kami) in the manga, is a Type of Monster Card.

It debuted as the V Jump February 2009 promotional card in the OCG, and the Shonen Jump Vol. 8, Issue 1 promotional card in the TCG. While Divine-Beast monsters were printed as far back as in 2000 as promotional cards for the three separate versions of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters 4: Battle of Great Duelist, they were unusable collector's cards that are officially considered Illegal.

Overview[edit]

The Divine-Beast Type is used exclusively for the Egyptian God Cards: "Slifer the Sky Dragon", "Obelisk the Tormentor", and "The Winged Dragon of Ra" (including their illegal original prints, as well as "The Winged Dragon of Ra - Sphere Mode" and "The Winged Dragon of Ra - Immortal Phoenix"). As such, all Divine-Beast monsters possess the DIVINE Attribute.

Support cards for the Type deal with easing the Summon of the Egyptian Gods, as well as helping the player in protecting and strengthening them once they hit the field.

Appearance in media[edit]

Contrary to its TCG/OCG exclusivity, the Wicked Gods in Yu-Gi-Oh! R, the Sacred Beasts in the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX anime, and the "Aesir" monsters in the Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's anime are also Divine-Beast monsters. The Wicked Gods were changed to Fiends, while the other 2 groups were split between other Types based on each member's aesthetic and thematic design.

The following characters use Divine-Beast monsters across the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise.
