Volcanic Emperor
"Volcanic Emperor", a Pyro monster.

Pyro (ほのお Honō "Flame") is a Type of Monster Card. It debuted in Booster 1 in the OCG, Legend of Blue Eyes White Dragon in the TCG, and Deck Mod Pack: Hyperspeed Rush Road!! in Rush Duel.

Overview[edit]

Pyro monsters represent control over fire; many early Pyro monsters depict various humans or humanoid beings with the ability to wield fire or imbue their armaments with the element, such as "Mr. Volcano" and "Flame Champion". A Pyro monster may also be an embodiment of fire itself, such as with "Invasion of Flames" and "Infernal Flame Emperor". Additionally, Pyro monsters may also represent various non-human creatures or even nonliving beings utilizing the fire element in various ways, such as with "Flame Cerebrus" and "Molten Zombie". Most Pyro monsters are FIRE, although Pyro monsters of other Attributes do exist, such as "Gem-Knight Garnet", "Daigusto Phoenix" and "Impcantation Candoll".

In the Rush Duel card game, Pyro monsters have been represented with quite a diverse monster concepts, mostly involving visual or linguistic puns related to fire, including but not limited to noodles, the outer space, and forensic chemistry.

Pyro monsters typically employ Burn strategies, inflicting effect damage to the opponent in various ways, which range from Stalling (such as "Solar Flare Dragon") to more proactive methods (such as "Inferno"). In 2023, several overaching Pyro support (and to an extent FIRE attribute as a whole) allows various Pyro/FIRE theme to be combined together in a similar manners to the Dinosaur type. New wave of Pyro strategies features an emphasis on destroying other Pyro/FIRE monsters and/or sending them to GY, either to provide beneficial effect while they are in GY or being banished for effect. This includes the "Snake-Eye" and "Volcanic" archetypes, as well as generic cards such as "Bonfire", "Fire Recovery", and "Infernal Flame Banshee".

Pyro monsters are also notable for containing a number of "fragile" Effect Monsters, like "Gaia Soul the Combustible Collective", which has a high ATK for its Level and in possession of an ATK boost effect, but is destroyed during the End Phase, or "Neo Flamvell Sabre", whose ATK fluctuates depending on the current game state.
