"Trap Monsters" are a group of Trap Cards that Special Summon themselves as a Monster Card by their own effects. In some cases, once the monster has been Summoned, it is both a monster and a Trap Card simultaneously, and in other cases, the Trap Card will simply Special Summon itself as solely a monster card. The card's text will state which is the case. Examples of these kinds of cards include "Zoma the Spirit" and "The Prime Monarch".
+
Trap Monster is a semi-officialCitation needed term used to describe Trap Cards with effects that Special Summon themselves as a Monster Card. In some cases, once the monster has been Summoned, it is both a monster and a Trap Card simultaneously, and in other cases, the Trap Card will simply Special Summon itself as a Monster Card solely. The card's text will specifically state which is the case.

 +
Characteristics
 +
All Trap Monsters have an effect to Special Summon themselves as a monster. All Trap Monsters are either Normal Traps or Continuous Traps—there are no Counter Traps that are Trap Monsters.
 +

 +
Depending on the specifics of the effect that Special Summons it, the Trap Monster may Special Summon itself from the Spell & Trap Zone (when the card is activated) or the Graveyard (due to the Trap Card's effect). Whether or not the card is still treated as a Trap Card also depends on the effect that Special Summoned it. <!--All Trap Monsters summoned from ST zone do so at card activation; no Trap Monsters are summoned from ST zone from an effect activation separate from their card activation (flip face-up)-->
 +

 +
If a Trap Monster is treated as an Equip Card from the Monster Zone (e.g. with "Relinquished"), it is treated only as an Equip Spell Card, not a Trap Card or Monster Card.citation needed

Still a Trap Card
 +
Trap Monsters that are still treated as Trap Cards after being Summoned include the text "(This card is also still a Trap.)" as part of the effect that Special Summons them. All such Trap Monsters are Continuous Traps, and are exclusively Special Summoned from the Spell & Trap Zone, at the activation of the Trap Card.

Identified by card text: (This card is also still a Trap.)
+
As they are considered both monsters and Trap Cards, these Trap Monsters are affected by effects that affect monsters (e.g. "Dark Hole") and effects that affect Traps (e.g. "Harpie's Feather Duster").

Trap Monsters are Special Summoned to the field from the Spell & Trap Zone when they resolve, and are subsequently treated as both Monster Cards and Trap Cards. As such, they take up both a Monster Zone and a Spell & Trap Zone at the same time.
+
Despite being Trap Cards, after being Summoned they only use a Monster Zone and do not use a Spell & Trap Zone. (Prior to the Master Rules April 1st 2020 Revision, they used both a Monster Zone and a Spell & Trap Zone after being Summoned. However, despite preventing a Spell & Trap Zone from being used, the Trap Monster's card was placed in a Monster Zone and was not considered to be in the Spell & Trap Zone.)

These Trap Monsters are affected both by effects that affect monsters, such as "Dark Hole", and affects that affect Trap Cards, such as "Harpie's Feather Duster", and can be targeted as either a Monster Card or as a Trap Card.
+
Interactions with activation conditions
 +
If a card or effect that specifically destroys monsters (e.g. "Offerings to the Doomed", "Mirror Force") is activated to destroy such a Trap Monster, cards that can only be activated when a monster would be destroyed (e.g. "My Body as a Shield") can be activated, but cards that can only activate when a Trap would be destroyed (e.g. "Fake Trap") cannot be activated. Likewise, if a card or effect that specifically destroys Traps (e.g. "Mystical Space Typhoon", "Heavy Storm") is activated to destroy such a Trap Monster, cards that only activate in response to effects that would destroy Trap Cards can be activated, but effects that only activate in response to effects that destroy monsters cannot. If a card or effect is activated that can destroy either monsters or Trap Cards (e.g. "Raigeki Break"), either of the aforementioned cards can be activated in response.

If they are negated with "Jinzo" or "Royal Decree", they will return to the Spell & Trap Zone as Continuous Trap Cards with no effect, and will remain there even after "Jinzo" or "Royal Decree" are removed. If "Book of Moon" is used against an already active Trap Monster, the Trap Monster is set as a Trap Card again and can be activated and Special Summoned the next turn.
+
Returning to the Spell & Trap Zone
 +
If such a Trap Monster's Trap effects are negated (e.g. due to "Jinzo", "Royal Decree"), that Trap Monster returns to the Spell & Trap Zone as a face-up Continuous Trap Card, and remains there face-up—only treated as a Trap Card—even if its effects later cease to be negated.

If a card or effect that destroys monsters specifically (like "Mirror Force") is activated, cards like "My Body as a Shield" can be activated to protect a Trap Monster, whereas cards like "Fake Trap" cannot be; likewise, if a card or effect that destroys Trap cards specifically (like "Heavy Storm") is activated, cards like "Fake Trap" can be activated, whereas cards like "My Body as a Shield" cannot. If a card or effect which can destroy both monsters and Traps (like "Raigeki Break") is activated, both cards like "My Body as a Shield" and "Fake Trap" can be activated. In all cases, effects like that of "Imperial Custom" prevent Trap Monsters from being destroyed, even by battle.
+
If such a Trap Monster is flipped face-down after being Special Summoned (e.g. due to "Book of Moon"), it is Set in the Spell & Trap Zone as a Trap Card again.

If a Trap Monster is treated as an Equip Card from the Monster Zone, such as due to the effect of "Relinquished", it is treated only as an Equip Spell Card, not a Trap Card or Monster Card.
+
In either case, if there are no available Spell & Trap Zones for the Trap Monster to be placed in when it is returned there, then the Trap Monster is sent to the Graveyard via game mechanics.

Not a Trap Card
Not a Trap Card
 +
Trap Monsters that are not treated as Trap Cards after being Summoned include the text "(This card is NOT treated as a Trap.)" as part of the effect that Special Summons them. These Trap Monsters either have an effect that Special Summons them from the Graveyard as a monster (in which case they can be either a Normal Trap or Continuous Trap), or have an effect that Special Summons them upon their card activation (in which case they are always a Normal Trap). All Trap Monsters that Special Summon themselves from the Graveyard specifically are not treated as Traps after being Summoned.

Identified by card text: (This card is NOT treated as a Trap.)
+
As they are only considered monsters, these Trap Monsters are only affected by effects that affect monsters. If such a Trap Monster is flipped face-down after being Summoned, it is Set in the Monster Zone like any other monster.

Some Trap Cards also have effects which Special Summon themselves as a monster that is not also treated as a Trap Card, mostoften a secondary one that activates from the Graveyard. Once the effect resolves, and the Trap Card is Special Summoned as a monster, it does not also occupy a Spell & Trap Zone, and functions exactly like a regular Monster Card.
+
After being Summoned, they only use a Monster Zone and do not use a Spell & Trap Zone. (This was the case even before the Master Rules April 1st 2020 Revision.)

If one of these monsters is flipped face-down, it is Set in the Monster Zone. If flipped face-up again after that, it will still be a monster. However, in this case, conditions that specify "If Summoned this way" will not be applied anymore.

Play style
Play style
Trap Monsters are typically used as an emergency defense to stonewall an opponent ("Metal Reflect Slime" is particularly useful in this regard). They can also used to provide quick Tribute Fodder ("Metal Reflect Slime" is great when combined with "Level Eater"), such as the Monarchs, and can in some cases be used offensively as well. Also, because they don't count as monsters while in a player's Deck or Graveyard, some effects might work on them as a Trap Card, while others (like the effect of "Morphing Jar #2") don't see them as a monster. This can be helpful in some cases (see All-Out Attacks OTK).
+
Trap Monsters, whether as members of a distinct archetype (such as "Golden Land" Continuous Trap Cards) or simply generic cards (such as "Statue of Anguish Pattern"), form a slow control-based strategy that attempts to maximize card advantage or some form of utility from each Trap Monster Summoned: whether the individual Trap has its own effect on Summon, or another card, such as "Anguish Pattern", generates support advantage and/or removal.

Another use for Trap Monsters is for Synchro Summoning or Xyz Summoning. Since most Trap Monsters are Level 4, they can be used to quickly Synchro Summon a Level 5-8 monster or Xyz Summon a Rank 4 monster. "Metal Reflect Slime", which is too high a level to be useful for a Synchro Summon, can be used for Rank 10 Monsters such as "Superdreadnought Rail Cannon Gustav Max". If combined with a Level 1 Tuner monster, they can be also used to Synchro Summon "Star Eater". "Shape Sister" is a Level 2 Tuner Trap Monster that can be used to assist in Synchro Summoning.
+
"Top Hat Hare the Silhouette Magician" and "BBS - Be Back Site" were the first cards to directly Set from the Deck Continuous Traps that can Special Summon themselves.

"Imperial Custom" makes Continuous Trap Cards indestructible. If you control a copy of "Imperial Custom" and a Trap Monster, the Trap Monster will not be able to be destroyed by battle or by a card effect.  This combination is especially potent in defensive decks.

Trap Monsters are also useful in a Uria Deck, as they provide the Deck with monsters that can also be used as a Tributes to Summon "Uria, Lord of Searing Flames" as well as give him extra ATK points.

It is usually a good idea to have "Trap Eater" and "Double Snare" and "Splendid Venus" in the Side Deck of a Deck using high concentrations of these cards, so that you can remove cards such as "Royal Decree" and "Jinzo" which obstruct the use of Trap Monsters. "Magic Planter" is also useful, allowing the player to send Trap Monsters to the Graveyard to draw cards; this is particularly useful if the Trap Monsters have their effects negated, which causes them to remain on the field as Continuous Trap Cards only.

"Judgment of Anubis" is useful to protect Trap Monsters from "Mystical Space Typhoon".

Trap Monster is a semi-official[citation needed] term used to describe Trap Cards with effects that Special Summon themselves as a Monster Card. In some cases, once the monster has been Summoned, it is both a monster and a Trap Card simultaneously, and in other cases, the Trap Card will simply Special Summon itself as a Monster Card solely. The card's text will specifically state which is the case.

Characteristics[edit]

All Trap Monsters have an effect to Special Summon themselves as a monster. All Trap Monsters are either Normal Traps or Continuous Traps—there are no Counter Traps that are Trap Monsters.

If a Trap Monster is treated as an Equip Card from the Monster Zone (e.g. with "Relinquished"), it is treated only as an Equip Spell Card, not a Trap Card or Monster Card.[citation needed]

Still a Trap Card[edit]

Trap Monsters that are still treated as Trap Cards after being Summoned include the text "(This card is also still a Trap.)" as part of the effect that Special Summons them. All such Trap Monsters are Continuous Traps, and are exclusively Special Summoned from the Spell & Trap Zone, at the activation of the Trap Card.

As they are considered both monsters and Trap Cards, these Trap Monsters are affected by effects that affect monsters (e.g. "Dark Hole") and effects that affect Traps (e.g. "Harpie's Feather Duster").

Despite being Trap Cards, after being Summoned they only use a Monster Zone and do not use a Spell & Trap Zone. (Prior to the Master Rules April 1st 2020 Revision, they used both a Monster Zone and a Spell & Trap Zone after being Summoned. However, despite preventing a Spell & Trap Zone from being used, the Trap Monster's card was placed in a Monster Zone and was not considered to be in the Spell & Trap Zone.[1])

Interactions with activation conditions[edit]

Returning to the Spell & Trap Zone[edit]

If such a Trap Monster's Trap effects are negated (e.g. due to "Jinzo", "Royal Decree"), that Trap Monster returns to the Spell & Trap Zone as a face-up Continuous Trap Card, and remains there face-up—only treated as a Trap Card—even if its effects later cease to be negated.

If such a Trap Monster is flipped face-down after being Special Summoned (e.g. due to "Book of Moon"), it is Set in the Spell & Trap Zone as a Trap Card again.

In either case, if there are no available Spell & Trap Zones for the Trap Monster to be placed in when it is returned there, then the Trap Monster is sent to the Graveyard via game mechanics.

Not a Trap Card[edit]

Trap Monsters that are not treated as Trap Cards after being Summoned include the text "(This card is NOT treated as a Trap.)" as part of the effect that Special Summons them. These Trap Monsters either have an effect that Special Summons them from the Graveyard as a monster (in which case they can be either a Normal Trap or Continuous Trap), or have an effect that Special Summons them upon their card activation (in which case they are always a Normal Trap). All Trap Monsters that Special Summon themselves from the Graveyard specifically are not treated as Traps after being Summoned.

As they are only considered monsters, these Trap Monsters are only affected by effects that affect monsters. If such a Trap Monster is flipped face-down after being Summoned, it is Set in the Monster Zone like any other monster.

After being Summoned, they only use a Monster Zone and do not use a Spell & Trap Zone. (This was the case even before the Master Rules April 1st 2020 Revision.)

Play style[edit]

Trap Monsters, whether as members of a distinct archetype (such as "Golden Land" Continuous Trap Cards) or simply generic cards (such as "Statue of Anguish Pattern"), form a slow control-based strategy that attempts to maximize card advantage or some form of utility from each Trap Monster Summoned: whether the individual Trap has its own effect on Summon, or another card, such as "Anguish Pattern", generates support advantage and/or removal.

"Top Hat Hare the Silhouette Magician" and "BBS - Be Back Site" were the first cards to directly Set from the Deck Continuous Traps that can Special Summon themselves.
