Prior[edit]

The prophecy Marik wished to fullfill, involving collecting the God cards

The Ishtar family lived a secluded life as part of their duty to prepare for the nameless Pharaoh's second coming. Marik Ishtar blamed the Pharaoh for his family's suffering and planned to put an end to the family's curse by not welcoming the Pharaoh and killing him instead. With the only clue to the identity of the king being that he would be identified by his wielding of the three gods, Marik believed that by whoever collected the three God cards could be crowned king. So he set out to fulfill the prophecy and become the new king and claim the king's power and memories for himself.[1] He founded the Ghouls by brainwashing individuals with his Millennium Rod and managed to steal two of the God cards,[2] while his sister, Ishizu Ishtar, was able to keep the third card, "The God of the Obelisk" safe.[3]

The Millennium Tauk granted Ishizu Ishtar the ability to see into the near future,[4] including a dark future where Marik succumbed to the evil of Dark Marik.[5] She hoped to use The Tauk's power of foresight to orchestrate a future where Marik could be saved.[6]

Kaiba receives "The God of Obelisk" as incentive to host the tournament.

Ishizu invited Seto Kaiba to a private exhibition at Domino City Museum, where she showed him a stone tablet, claiming it depicted the origins of Duel Monsters. And showed that it contained an image of a priest, battling a nameless pharaoh, who resembled Kaiba and Yugi, respectively. She told Kaiba about the God cards and requested he start a tournament to draw out the Ghouls who had stolen them and win the cards back. To incentivize him, she gave him, "The God of the Obelisk".[7] However she had foreseen a future where she Dueled Kaiba, in which his use of "The God of the Obelisk" resulted in his defeat.[6]

Ishizu also met Dark Yugi at the museum, where he had just learned he was the Pharaoh, from observing the tablet. She told him that a battle to regain his memories was to take place in the city.[4]

Kaiba organized the tournament, through his company KaibaCorp. It was to be Japan's largest gathering of Duelists. He advertised it in card magazines and online, by publishing a hint saying "come to the place where ancient Duelists and their cards slumber in the stones", along with a date and time for the announcement of the tournament. People who picked up on the hint met at museum on the Sunday. Kaiba made an appearance there announcing that in two days the city would become the stage for the Battle City tournament and that in order to participate Duelists must have a next generation Duel Disk and be prepared to ante their rarest card.[4]

The Duel Disks were made available at card-specialty stores and given out freely to Duelists who ranked level 5 or higher out of a possible 8 in KaibaCorp's Duelist database.[8] Each Duel Disk came with a Puzzle Card attached to the back of it. When stacked together, the forty eight Puzzle Cards formed a map of the city. By collecting any six and stacking them a light would shine on the partial map they form, indicating the location of the finals. As he was also participating, Kaiba had no prior knowledge of where the location would be.[9]

News of the tournament reached Marik, who thought it was convenient to have all his prey gather in one place and dispatched the Rare Hunters to Domino City.[8]

Dark Yugi entered the tournament, hoping to regain his memories. He kept this a secret from Yugi, who entered with the motive to face Kaiba in a fair Duel. His friend, Katsuya Jonouchi wished to enter too, but ranked too low in KaibaCorp's database. However the Card shop manager changed his level from 2 to 5, as part of a ploy for the Rare Hunters to win his "Red-Eyes Black Dragon" from him.[8]

A total of 48 people registered for the tournament. One hour before the tournament began, Kaiba appeared on a big screen in Domino City Plaza and went over some of the rules. He told the participants about the Puzzle Cards, that they must wager them in addition to a rare card in their Duels, and how to find the location of the finals using the Puzzle Cards.[9]

Preliminaries[edit]

Some of the contestants, Insector Haga, Dinosaur Ryuzaki, Esper Roba, and Ryota Kajiki

Dark Yugi Dueled entirely Rare Hunters in the preliminaries. In the first Duel of the tournament, he defeated the Rare Hunter who had taken Jonouchi's "Red-Eyes Black Dragon". Marik Ishtar took full control of the Rare Hunter to introduce himself to Dark Yugi after the Duel.[10] Dark Yugi won back "Red-Eyes Black Dragon", but Jonouchi declined his offer to take it back, wanting to prove his worth as a Duelist first.[11]

Esper Roba faked having ESP, when in reality he had his brothers spy on his opponents' hands.[12] He defeated one opponent, then defeated Dinosaur Ryuzaki, without losing any Life Points. Ryuzaki tried to talk Jonouchi out of Dueling Roba, saying he would not stand a chance. However Jonouchi sought out an opponent who seemed stronger than him, so he challenged Roba.[11] During the Duel, Jonouchi copped how Roba was faking his powers[12] and went on to win, taking "Jinzo" and a Puzzle Card.[13]

Koji Nagumo defeated an opponent, but was unhappy with the card he had won through the ante. He demanded that his opponent give something of equal value to his card, "Hyozanryu", or ¥100,000 (about US$900 at the time), threatening violence if he did not comply. Mokuba Kaiba intervened as Battle City's steering committee chairman. He pointed out that it was against the rules to change the ante after the Duel or to bet money. He also ruled the two wager cards as being close enough in value to be considered a fair ante. When Nagumo insulted Mokuba, Seto Kaiba stepped in. Kaiba tore up Nagumo's "Hyozanryu" card, claiming Nagumo was about to lose it anyway as he challenged him to a Duel. Kaiba wagered "The God of the Obelisk" and a case full of rare cards. He allowed Nagumo to borrow cards from the case to compensate for "Hyozanryu". Despite this, Nagumo was easily overpowered by "Obelisk" and lost.[14]

Dark Yugi wondered how the Rare Hunters knew Jonouchi had "Red-Eyes Black Dragon" and Yugi realized that the card shop where they got their Duel Disks was a front for Rare Hunters. They went back to the card shop and were challenged to a Duel by the next Rare Hunter, Pandora.[15] Pandora had both players legs locked in place, such that the loser of the Duel would have their feet sawn off.[16] Despite losing, Pandora planned on saving himself from the buzzsaws using a key he had hidden on his person. However Marik used the Millennium Rod to brainwash Pandora into not being able to see or feel the key. Yugi intervened and saved Pandora on time. Marik then took full control of Pandora to introduce himself to Yugi.[1]

Insector Haga promised a boy a rare card to help him cheat against Jonouchi. He got the boy to steal Jonouchi's Duel Disk, sneak a "Parasite Paracide" into his Deck. When Jonouchi recovered his Duel Disk, the boy told him that his own Deck and Duel Disk had been stolen and offered to bring the thief to him. Haga, who gave him a "Pillroach" instead of a rare card and sprayed Super Bug Killer in the boy's eyes when he protested.[17] Despite the disadvantage caused by "Parasite Paracide", Jonouchi won, taking "Insect Queen" and two Puzzle Cards per the ante.[18]

While traveling to Domino City on his motorbike, Marik controlled the Doll remotely using the Millennium Rod and used him as a proxy to challenge and Duel Dark Yugi.[19] Marik overpowered Dark Yugi with the God card, "Slifer the Sky Dragon". As Dark Yugi grew concerned that he could not win, Kaiba offered him encouragement,[20] unwilling to allow Dark Yugi to lose to someone other than himself.[21] Dark Yugi won the Duel, claiming "Slifer the Sky Dragon" and a Puzzle Card.[22]

Kaiba challenged Dark Yugi to a Duel, but he had no time to accept as Marik had just warned him that the Ghouls were watching his friends and planned on putting them in danger. As Dark Yugi searched for his friends, he was confronted by a duo of Rare Hunters. As the Rare Hunters tried to decide who Dueled Dark Yugi first, Kaiba proposed a Tag Duel, as he disliked and wished to wipe out the Duels. Kaiba made short work of defeating the two of them with "Obelisk".[22]

Jonouchi used the "Duelist Search Sensor" in his Duel Disk to locate his next opponent. It led him to Domino City Aquarium, where he faced Ryota Kajiki. Jonouchi bet two Puzzle Cards, along with "Jinzo" and "Insect Queen" and Kajiki bet two Puzzle Cards, along with "Leviathan" and "Fortress Whale". The others at the aquarium were waiting to see a killer whale show and thought the Duel must be an opening act.[23] Kajiki made use of the setting to hide his "Legendary Fisherman" monster during the Duel, masking it as a killer whale at the show.[24] Jonouchi won and Kajiki told Jonouchi of how "Legendary Fisherman" reminds him of his missing father and he cannot bare having it in the Graveyard. He then gave Jonouchi "Legendary Fisherman" in place of "Fortress Whale" for his ante, feeling he was putting too much fate in the card, when his father would fight beside him regardless.[25]

A least one more Ghoul was defeated by Dark Yugi or Kaiba. Kaiba helped Yugi find Jonouchi by using his satellite to pinpoint Jonouchi's Duel Disk, but claimed to do so to help locate the Duels. He recalled that Jonouchi's Duelist level was too low to participate in the tournament and intended to disqualify him. The Ghouls reported to Marik that Dark Yugi and Kaiba had teamed up and they were unable to beat them and their God cards.[25] Marik then dispatched Mask of Light and Mask of Darkness, whom he called the "Anti-God Attack Force".[26]

Mask of Light snuck up on Kaiba, attaching a Duelist's Chastity Belt to his Duel Disk. In order to unlock it, Dark Yugi and Kaiba had to meet Masks of Light and Darkness on top of a skyscraper for the Explosive Tag Team Match of Death, in which losers would fall through a glass ceiling to their deaths.[26] Dark Yugi and Kaiba first defeated Mask of Darkness who used a parachute to save himself and Marik took control of Mask of Light to speak to Dark Yugi and Kaiba. Kaiba took two Puzzle Cards from Mask of Light, giving one to Dark Yugi, qualifying them both for the finals. He then inserted his six Puzzle Cards into his Duel Disk where created a 3-D projection of the city with a light pointing to the location of the finals.[27]
