Lists

Wyrm, known as Genryu (げんりゅう Genryū, "Phantom Dragon" or "Illusion Dragon"[n 1]) in Japan, is a Type of monster introduced in Duelist Alliance. It is the first new Type since Psychic, ignoring Creator God and Divine-Beast.

Wyrm-Type monsters resemble dragons, but unlike Dragon-Type monsters, they take more of a spiritual, mythical and phantasmal look. Currently all of them, except "Metaphized Armed Dragon", are part of the "Cosmic Dragon" archetype, which seems to be based on Chinese dragons and/or other animals within the lore of China such as tigers (some may be a mix of the two), resembling "Tiger Dragon" and "Orient Dragon" (which are both Dragon-Types, not Wyrm-Types). "Metaphization", the type's first generic support card, hints that there is a relationship between the Dragon-Type and the Wyrm-Type.

Trivia

  • This monster type is similar to the Psychic-Type, who usually resemble another Type of monster. In addition, they also debuted in the first Booster Pack of the series, in which new techniques of summoning were introduced as well.
  • The type name "Wyrm" is the Old-English word for European Dragons; a strangely contrary choice for the translation of "Genryu", considering the appearance of these creatures being obviously of the Eastern style. This is, however, in line with the common practice of localizing the game as much as they can, regardless of whether it actually makes sense.

Notes

  1. The kanji げん (gen) can be variously translated as "phantom", "illusion", "vision", "apparition", "legendary", "mythic" or a number of related terms; りゅう (ryū) is the kanji for "dragon".
