Monsters are Tributed in two ways:
- As a Tribute Summon requirement.
- As a cost, by an effect, or as part of a Summoning condition (that uses this term).
Unless a card specifically states that you can Tribute monsters in your hand or under your opponent's control, such as "Gishki Aquamirror" and "Reptilianne Vaskii", you can only Tribute monsters you control (on the field).
While normally only monsters can be Tributed, "Kiryu" can Tribute itself while treated as an Equip Spell Card.
A monster that requires a Tribute to Tribute Summon.
