Tribute, called Release (Japanese: リリース Rirīsu) in the OCG and the Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's and Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL anime series (previously called Sacrifice (生（い）け贄（にえ）に捧（ささ）げる Ikenie ni Sasageru) in the OCG and the Yu-Gi-Oh! and Yu-Gi-Oh! GX anime series, and offer as a Tribute in the TCG) refers to a method of sending a monster(s) the player controls to the Graveyard.

Monsters are Tributed in two ways:

• As a Tribute Summon requirement.
• As a cost, by an effect, or as part of a Summoning condition (that Specifically uses the word "tribute").

Unless a card specifically states that you can Tribute monsters in your hand or under your opponent's control, such as "Gishki Aquamirror" and "Reptilianne Vaskii", you can only Tribute monsters you control (on the field).

While normally only monsters can be Tributed, "Kiryu" can Tribute itself while treated as an Equip Spell Card.

The upcoming True Draco archetype uses many cards that tribute continuous spell and trap cards.

"Mask of Restrict" stops any card from being tributes.

Since tributing is almost exclusively done as a cost (an exception being "Hieratic Sun Dragon Overlord of Heliopolis"), generally any monster can be tributed unless directly specified otherwise, such as many Duston cards, including cards unaffected by card effects.

  A monster that Tributes itself as cost to activate its effect

• 

  A Ritual Spell Card that Tributes monsters as part of its effect to Ritual Summon a Ritual Monster

• 

  A monster that Tributes monsters as part of its Summoning condition
