Damage calculation is the process of calculating the Battle Damage done to Life Points from an attack and determining which monster(s) is to be destroyed (if any). When an Attack Position monster is destroyed, the damage inflicted is the difference of the attacking monster's ATK minus the ATK of the other monster.The damage calculates first then the face up monster is destroyed.

damage calculation

Damage calculation (Japanese: ダメージけいさん Damēji Keisan) is the process during the Damage Step of calculating the battle damage done to Life Points from an attack and determining which monster(s) is to be destroyed (if any).

Mechanics[edit]

When attacking a monster[edit]

When a monster attacks another monster, the damage inflicted and the monsters(s) that would be destroyed are calculated based on the following rules:

Monster A (attacking monster) attacks Monster B (attack target)
If B is in Attack Position
Compare ATK of A with ATK of B
A < B
A = B
  • No battle damage is inflicted.
  • If:
    • ATKs of A and B are not 0: A and B destroy each other.
    • ATKs of A and B are 0: no monster is destroyed.
A > B
  • A inflicts battle damage to the controller of B, equal to ATK of A - ATK of B.
  • A destroys B.
If B is in Defense Position
Compare ATK of A with DEF of B
A < B
  • B inflicts battle damage to the controller of A, equal to DEF of B - ATK of A.
  • No monster is destroyed.
A = B
  • No battle damage is inflicted.
  • No monster is destroyed.
A > B
  • No battle damage is inflicted.
  • A destroys B.

When direct attacking[edit]

When a monster performs a direct attack:

  • If the attacking monster's ATK is not 0, it inflicts battle damage to its opponent equal to its ATK.
  • If the attacking monster's ATK is 0, it does not inflict battle damage.

Interactions with effects[edit]

  • Card effects can make monsters change their ATK/DEF during damage calculation. (e.g. "Cyberdark Edge")
  • Card effects can make monsters inflict piercing battle damage; if a monster with piercing attacks a Defense Position monster, and its ATK is higher than the attack target's DEF, then it inflicts battle damage to the attack target's controller, equal to the difference between its ATK and the attack target's DEF.
  • Card effects can make monsters apply their DEF for damage calculation, even when the situation normally applies the monster's ATK for damage calculation.
