Xyz Monsters (pronounced ik-seez, Japanese: エクシーズモンスター Ekushīzu Monsutā, abbreviated Xモンスター in card text since Duelist Alliance) are a type of monsters that must be Xyz Summoned. Their card frame is colored in black, decorated with streaks and spots representing stars in space.

Instead of a Level, Xyz Monsters have a Rank. This Rank determines the required Levels of the Xyz Materials needed in order to Xyz Summon your Xyz Monster. An Xyz Monster's Rank is depicted by a row of yellow stars in black orbs (as opposed to the yellow stars in red orbs of a monster's Level) that extend outwards from the left-hand side of the card (opposite to where a monster's Level would be depicted), similar to Dark Synchro Monsters. However, unlike Synchro Monsters, an Xyz Monster's Rank is not the total sum of the monsters' Levels used to Summon it; thus, if 2 Level 3 monsters are required, then the Xyz Monster would be Rank 3, not Level 6.
+
Characteristics
An Xyz Monster's Rank is not its Level. Xyz Monsters do not have Levels. Therefore, they cannot be used for Synchro, Ritual, or Xyz Summons unless explicitly named as a requirement. Any effects that would refer to the Level of a monster, such as those of "Gravity Bind", "Level Limit - Area B", "Roulette Barrel", "Star Changer" and even "Burden of the Mighty" cannot be applied to any Xyz Monsters under any circumstances.
+
Xyz Monsters are Extra Deck monsters:
 +
* They cannot exist in the hand or the Main Deck; if an Xyz Monster would be moved to the hand or Main Deck, it is returned to the Extra Deck instead.
 +
* If an Xyz Monster is not properly Special Summoned by Xyz Summon before being sent to the Graveyard or banished, it cannot be Special Summoned from there (even by effects that ignore Summoning conditions).

Most Xyz Monsters require you to "detach" (meaning "place in the Graveyard") their Xyz Materials in order for their effects to activate, limiting their effect usage. When an Xyz Monster is removed from the field, its Xyz Materials are sent to the Graveyard. Some also have negative effects when they have no more Materials attached, so it may be best to use such effects sparingly.
+
Ranks
 +
Rank
 +
Xyz Monsters have a Rank in place of a Level. An Xyz Monster's Rank determines the required Levels of the Xyz Materials needed in order to Xyz Summon it. An Xyz Monster's Rank is depicted by a row of yellow stars in black orbs (as opposed to the yellow stars in red orbs used to depict a monster's Level) that extend outwards from the left-hand side of the card (the opposite side to Level stars).

Generally, Xyz Monsters with 3000 or more ATK have either negative effects or rather difficult summoning requirements (high Level monsters or specific materials). Additionally, Xyz Monsters have the drawback that they can usually only use their effects while they have Xyz Material, meaning the player will usually only be able to use their Xyz Monster's effects up to the number of its Xyz Materials. However, Xyz Monsters are easier to Summon since they don't need a specific kind of monster (like a Tuner) or a Spell Card (such as Ritual Spell Card or Fusion Spell Card). Thus, there is little restriction in the monsters that can be used as Xyz Materials and can fit into almost any Deck.
+
Because they do not have Levels, Xyz Monsters are unaffected by card effects that depend on a monster's Level (e.g.: "Gravity Bind"), and cannot become involved in actions that require monsters with Levels (e.g.: Synchro Summoning).

In Order of Chaos, a particular Xyz Monster was released: "Number C39: Utopia Ray", that can be Xyz Summoned by using a face-up "Number 39: Utopia" you control as Xyz Material; its Xyz Materials become the Xyz Materials of "Number C39". This kind of Xyz Summon is called "Xyz Evolution" and consists on using a preexisting Xyz Monster as Xyz Material of another one. Among the monsters that can be Xyz Summoned by this method include "Constellar Ptolemy M7", "Gaia Dragon, the Thunder Charger" and "Downerd Magician".
+
Xyz Materials
 +
Xyz Material

This kind of Xyz Summoning evolved to more complex ones, such as "Rank-Up", which uses "Rank-Up-Magic" Spell Cards to perform Xyz Summons. The monsters Xyz Summoned this way are all "Number C" or "CXyz" monsters (except for Xyz Monsters Summoned via "Rank-Up-Magic Astral Force"), have a higher Rank than its base form, and any of them can be Xyz Summoned by the generic way; however, it would be more difficult, as the regular Xyz Summon requires a high number of monsters (generally of a specific Type or Attribute), and most of them require their base form to be attached to use their main effect. Most of the "Number C" and "CXyz" monsters have effects that inflict damage to your opponent. <br> Some examples include "Number C39: Utopia Ray V", "Number C96: Dark Storm", "Number C101: Silent Honor DARK", "CXyz Skypalace Babylon" and "CXyz Coach Lord Ultimatrainer".
+
Xyz Materials are the requisite monsters needed to Xyz Summon the Xyz Monster. Each Xyz Monster lists its required Xyz Materials in the first line of its card text.
<br>"Rank-Down-Magic Numeron Fall" is an exception between the Spell Cards that are used to perform Xyz Summons, as it uses an Xyz Monster to Summon another one with a lower Rank (albeit it is only used for the "Utopia" Archetype).

 +
While attached to an Xyz Monster (underneath the Xyz Monster Card), Xyz Materials are not treated as being on the field, and are not treated as monsters. Cards being attached as an Xyz Material or used as an Xyz Material in an Xyz Summon are not considered to be leaving the field.

__notoc__
+
Most Xyz Monsters require the player to detach their Xyz Materials as a cost to activate their effects, limiting their number of activations. If an Xyz Monster leaves the field or ceases to be a monster, its Xyz Materials are sent to the Graveyard. Xyz Materials remain attached if an Xyz Monster is flipped face-down.

A Xyz Summon is the act of Summoning an Xyz Monster from the Extra Deck using 2 or more monsters of the same Level as Xyz Materials. During the Main Phase, the turn player can Xyz Summon an Xyz Monster from the Extra Deck with a Rank equal to the Level of the Xyz Materials.
 +

 +
To perform an Xyz Summon without the presence of previous Xyz Monsters, 2 or more monsters with the same Level must be used as the Xyz Materials, plus any additional specifiers. Token Monsters cannot be used as Xyz Materials. Monsters that do not have Levels (such as Xyz Monsters) cannot be used as Xyz Materials unless specifically permitted (such as by "Number S0: Utopic ZEXAL"). While the majority of the Xyz Monsters require 2 Xyz Materials, many Xyz Monsters require more or can use a variable number of Materials.

The two other "Number" Monsters appreared in the anime or manga first with regular Xyz summoning conditions, but were changed to Rank 0 summoning conditions upon te release to OCG/TCG with their Ranks retained. ==Trivia==

Trivia
* When Xyz Monsters were revealed in the OCG, they were mistakenly translated as "Exceed Monsters" by fans. This was likely because "Xyz" is not an actual word and has no immediately obvious pronunciation. The word "Exceed" was likely the closest English equivalent to the Japanese エクシーズ Ekushīzu.
+
* There are Machine monsters with every possible original Rank (from 1 to 12). Machine is the only Type with this property.
** This term has fallen into official use in the Chinese OCG, where the term for "Xyz" is 超量 or literally "Exceed".
+

 +
* "Superdimensional Robot Galaxy Destroyer" has the highest ATK of all Xyz Monsters, with 5000 ATK. "Superdreadnought Rail Cannon Juggernaut Liebe", "CXyz Skypalace Babylon" and "Number 81: Superdreadnought Rail Cannon Super Dora" are tied with the highest DEF of all Xyz Monsters, with 4000 DEF each.
 +

 +
* "Number F0: Utopic Future", "Number F0: Utopic Future Slash", "Number S0: Utopic ZEXAL", and "Number F0: Utopic Draco Future" are currently the only Xyz Monsters that do not have a printed Rank (although they are always treated as Rank 1)
 +

 +
* The background image (the black part) of an Xyz Monster card is similar to the card artwork of "Rank-Up-Magic Numeron Force".

* Similar to how Synchro Monsters played a big role in the plot of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's and were meant to destroy the world, Xyz Monsters play a similar role in Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL and are claimed to be destined to destroy all universes, namely the "Numbers".
+
* Xyz Monsters can be seen as a conceptual evolution of Dark Synchro Monsters from Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's:
** Similarily, Xyz Monsters appear to be the "opposite" of Synchro Monsters; hence their black color opposed to Synchro Monsters' white color, and their Ranks (rather than Levels) being on the opposite side of the card. This is further noted by the "Evilswarm" archetype, which contains Xyz counterparts of several Synchro Monsters.
+
** This is most evident when comparing the two visually: both Dark Synchro and Xyz Monsters are black cards with a left-aligned row of modified star pips to represent an alternate property to standard Levels: Negative Levels and Ranks, respectively. Both have also been considered "opposite" to standard Synchro Monsters.

* In anime, during an Xyz Summon, Xyz Materials will transform into light entities, while colored by their respective Attributes. Then, when the Xyz Monster is Summoned, its Xyz Materials will be floating around it as orbs colored by its Xyz Monster's Attribute.
+
* Both Iggy Arlo and the Stomptroopers in the Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V anime mistakenly believed Xyz Monsters to be Level 0, because they do not have any Levels.
** LIGHT is yellow, DARK is purple, FIRE is red, WATER is blue, WIND is green, and EARTH is orange - each being a color of the visible spectrum. Some monsters when being used in an Xyz Summon that have the same attribute may have different color shadings.

* The background image (the black part) of every Xyz Monster Card is similar to the card artwork of "Rank-Up-Magic Numeron Force".

Lists

Xyz Monsters (pronounced ik-seez,[1] Japanese: エクシーズモンスター Ekushīzu Monsutā, abbreviated エクシーズモンスター in card text since Duelist Alliance) are a type of monsters that must be Xyz Summoned. Their card frame is colored in black, decorated with streaks and spots representing stars in space.

Characteristics

Xyz Monsters are Extra Deck monsters:

Ranks

Xyz Monsters have a Rank in place of a Level. An Xyz Monster's Rank determines the required Levels of the Xyz Materials needed in order to Xyz Summon it. An Xyz Monster's Rank is depicted by a row of yellow stars in black orbs (as opposed to the yellow stars in red orbs used to depict a monster's Level) that extend outwards from the left-hand side of the card (the opposite side to Level stars).

Because they do not have Levels, Xyz Monsters are unaffected by card effects that depend on a monster's Level (e.g.: "Gravity Bind"), and cannot become involved in actions that require monsters with Levels (e.g.: Synchro Summoning).

Xyz Materials

Xyz Materials are the requisite monsters needed to Xyz Summon the Xyz Monster. Each Xyz Monster lists its required Xyz Materials in the first line of its card text.

While attached to an Xyz Monster (underneath the Xyz Monster Card), Xyz Materials are not treated as being on the field, and are not treated as monsters. Cards being attached as an Xyz Material or used as an Xyz Material in an Xyz Summon are not considered to be leaving the field.

Xyz Summoning

A Xyz Summon is the act of Summoning an Xyz Monster from the Extra Deck using 2 or more monsters of the same Level as Xyz Materials. During the Main Phase, the turn player can Xyz Summon an Xyz Monster from the Extra Deck with a Rank equal to the Level of the Xyz Materials.

When an Xyz Monster is Xyz Summoned, the Xyz Materials are stacked and placed underneath the Xyz Monster Card.

Cannot be Xyz Summoned

Unlike Fusion and Synchro Monsters, there are currently no Xyz Monsters that cannot be Xyz Summoned in the OCG/TCG. However Number 0 Monsters and two other "Number" Monsters involve Xyz Monsters of the same Rank as Xyz Materials. There is also one more Xyz Monster requiring Xyz Monsters of the same specific Rank to summon that is original to the card game.

In the case of Number 0 Monsters, they are Rank 1 Monsters printed as Rank 0, characterized by that their materials have no Level. The two other "Number" Monsters appreared in the anime or manga first with regular Xyz summoning conditions, but were changed to Rank 0 summoning conditions upon te release to OCG/TCG with their Ranks retained. Exosisters Magnifica requires two Rank 4 Xyz Monsters, and its Rank is equal to the sum of the Ranks of the materials.

In the anime

Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL

Xyz Monsters are the main focus of Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL, in which they are dubbed Monster Xyz (モンスターエクシーズ Monsutā Ekushīzu) in the Japanese version, for unclear reasons. Xyz Monsters are made of antimatter, and have traveled to Yuma's dimension from the other side of a black hole.[2] The "Number" Xyz Monsters are claimed to be destined to destroy all universes.

Examples

Trivia

  • There are Machine monsters with every possible original Rank (from 1 to 12). Machine is the only Type with this property.
  • Xyz Monsters can be seen as a conceptual evolution of Dark Synchro Monsters from Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's:
    • This is most evident when comparing the two visually: both Dark Synchro and Xyz Monsters are black cards with a left-aligned row of modified star pips to represent an alternate property to standard Levels: Negative Levels and Ranks, respectively. Both have also been considered "opposite" to standard Synchro Monsters.
