Tribute (known as Release in the OCG, Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's and Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL anime. And as Sacrifice in the previous OCG,Yu-Gi-Oh! and Yu-Gi-Oh! GX animes)
Is an act of moving card from field or hand to the Graveyard.

Cards can be Tributed either by a card that use the word "Tribute" as a term of this act [note], or for Tribute Summons.

Unless the card specifically states that you can Tribute your opponent's card like "Soul Exchange" or "Lava Golem", a player can only Tribute card they control.

When a card is Tributed, it is sent to the Graveyard as a result.

Notes

^ Cards which involved Tributing formerly worded it as "offer as a Tribute", "Tributing" and "Tributed" are not actually words. This practice was eventually stopped.
