To Detach is to send an Xyz Material attached to an Xyz Monster to the Graveyard. Often, this must be done in order to activate the effect of the Xyz Monster, though it can also be done as a cost for certain other cards or as part of an effect.
Since Xyz Materials are not considered to be on the field in the OCG, effects which activate when a monster is sent from the field to the Graveyard do not activate. The TCG now follows this rule as well [1] though it previously followed a rule that the Xyz Materials were on the field.
For the most part, once an Xyz Material is detached from a monster, it cannot be re-attached. However, a few cards, such as "Number 9: Canopy Star - Dyson Sphere" and the anime version of "Number 19: Freezerdon", can re-attach Xyz Materials either to themselves or other Xyz Monsters. Cards such as "Xyz Reborn" and "Overlay Regen" can also attach other cards to Xyz Monsters as Materials after their Summoning.
