To flip (Japanese: リバース Ribāsu "Reverse") is to change a card from a face-down to a face-up position, or vice versa. Players are not allowed to flip a face-up card face-down, except through a card effect.

Ways of flipping monsters[edit]

There are four ways a Monster Card can be flipped:

  1. Through Flip Summon.
  2. Through battle position changes; a face-down Defense Position monster must be flipped when it changes to Attack Position through card effect like "A/D Changer".
  3. Through battle; a face-down Monster Card must be flipped at the Damage Step if it was attacked.
  4. Through a card effect, such as "Swords of Revealing Light" or "Book of Moon".

Ways of flipping Spells and Traps[edit]

There are two ways a Spell/Trap Card can be flipped:

  1. Through activating it.
  2. Through a card effect, such as "Scrap-Iron Scarecrow".
