(That's got nothing to do with it. You could also verify the Materials used in a Synchro Summon afterwards, but you cannot use face-down monsters as Synchro Materials. This is just how the rules are defined.)

While Fusion Materials can be specifically named monsters, they can also be more general. For example, "[[Five-Headed Dragon]]" simply requires 5 [[Dragon]]-[[Type]] monsters, and "[[Chimeratech Overdragon]]" requires 1 "[[Cyber Dragon]]" and 1 or more [[Machine]]-Type monsters.

Listed Fusion Materials are monsters specifically named on a Fusion Monster as materials; cards that specify listed Fusion Materials, such as "[[Centrifugal Field]]", cannot affect Fusion Monsters that do not specifically name Fusion Materials, such as "Five-Headed Dragon".

Fusion Materials can be used even if the Summon is not a [[Fusion Summon]]. Cards in the [[Hex-Sealed Fusion]] [[series]] [[Tribute]] themselves and the other necessary Fusion Materials specified on a Fusion Monster to Special Summon it, but this Special Summon is not treated as a Fusion Summon. [[Fusion Substitute Monster]]s such as "[[King of the Swamp]]" can replace one named Fusion Material. However, monsters whose name is being treated as a listed Fusion Material (e.g. "[[Elemental HERO Prisma]]") are treated as correct and not as Fusion Substitute Monsters. Fusion Substitute Monsters can only replace specifically named Fusion Materials; as such, a Fusion Substitute Monster cannot be used in the Fusion Summon of "[[Evil HERO Dark Gaia]]" as it does not name any monsters, and can only replace "[[UFOroid]]" in the Fusion Summon of "[[UFOroid Fighter]]".

"Evil HERO Inferno Wing" and its Fusion Materials ("Elemental HERO Avian" and "Elemental HERO Burstinatrix") in the artwork of "Dark Fusion"

Fusion Materials (Japanese: ゆうごうざい Yūgō Sozai), formerly referred to as Fusion-Material Monsters[1] and then Fusion Material Monsters, are the monsters that are required to be used for the Special Summon of a Fusion Monster. Almost every Fusion Monster that can be Fusion Summoned or Special Summoned by a procedure that uses Fusion Materials (i.e. Contact Fusion) lists its required Fusion Materials in the the first line of its card text.

When Fusion Summoning a Fusion Monster, or Special Summoning a Fusion Monster with procedures defined in its Summoning conditions, the Fusion Materials used must match the material requirement listed on the Fusion Monster.

A monster is only used as a Fusion Material if it is used in a Contact Fusion procedure, or if it is used in a card effect that Fusion Summons a Fusion Monster. If a card effect interacts with materials listed on a Fusion Monster, but performs a Special Summon instead of a Fusion Summon, then the monsters being interacted with are not used as Fusion Materials.

Trivia[edit]

  • "Elemental HERO Divine Neos" is the only Fusion Monster who can be Fusion Summoned, but describes its material requirements in its Summoning condition, due to the complexity of its material requirements. "Five-Headed Dragon" did so as well in its first print, but was later simplified into the standard format when it was reprinted.
