Link Summon

A Link Summon is the act of Special Summoning a Link Monster from the Extra Deck.

How to Link Summon

During the Main Phase, the turn player can Link Summon by choosing a Link Monster in their Extra Deck, and sending the appropriate face-up monsters they control to the GY as materials. The number of materials must be exactly equal to the Link Number of the Summoning Link Monster (i.e. a LINK-3 monster requires 3 materials); however, Link Monsters on the field can alternatively be treated as multiple materials equal to their own Link Number (i.e. a LINK-3 monster can be treated as 1 or 3 materials, but not 2). After that, the chosen Link Monster is Special Summoned from the Extra Deck to the Extra Monster Zone, or a zone on that player's field that a Link Monster on the field points to, in face-up Attack Position.

Non-LINK-1 Link Monsters often have a minimum on the number of monsters sent as materials for their Link Summon. For example, "Decode Talker's" materials are "2+ Effect Monsters"; therefore, at least 2 Effect Monsters must be sent as material for its Summon. In other words, a single LINK-3 Effect Link Monster cannot be used as the 3 materials required for "Decode Talker's" Link Summon.

In the anime

In the anime, using monsters to perform a Link Summon is known as Setting the Link Markers.

When a Link Summon is performed, the Duelist shoots forward a burst of energy which creates an Arrowhead portal in the sky, which the Duelist and their monsters fly through. The Link Materials then transform into red and white streaks of energy that enter the appropriate Link Markers, causing them to turn red. The Link Markers are then said to have its circuit combined. The portal then glows white and energy converges to form the monster and the Link Markers around it. The monster and the Duelist then emerge from the Arrowhead portal.

The color of the summoning space that a player enters to Link Summon differs, depending on the monster's Type or Attribute.

Unlike previous summoning methods in the anime, the Duelist states the summoning conditions of the Link Monster before calling out the monsters he/she is using to summon it.
