To Set is to place a card on the field face-down.

Setting a Monster Card

When you Set a Monster Card, you place it on a Monster Card Zone face-down in Defense Position.

A Set can be conducted once per turn, just as you can only Normal Summon once per turn. A Normal Summon of a monster will take up your Set for the turn, and vice-versa.

If the monster you want to Set is Level 5 or more, you must Tribute another monster(s) from your side of the field first and then Tribute Set the monster (you do not show your opponent the monster you Set).

If you want to Flip Summon a monster after Setting it, you must wait until your next turn's Main Phase.

Setting a Spell or Trap Card

A Set Spell or Trap Card.

When you Set a Spell/Trap Card, you place it on a Spell & Trap Card Zone face-down in a vertical position, except Field Spell Cards, which can only be placed on the Field Card Zone, even if it is face-down.

You can activate any type of Spell Cards in the same turn they are Set except for Quick-Play Spell Cards. Trap Cards can't be activated on the same turn they were Set, unless by a card effect (such as "Temple of the Kings", "Dimension Slide" if the Special Summoned was Xyz Summoned, and "Assault Mode" by the effect of "Night Wing Sorceress").
