Tribute (known as Release in the OCG, Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's and Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL anime, and as Sacrifice in the previous OCG, Yu-Gi-Oh! and Yu-Gi-Oh! GX animes) is an act of moving monster the player controls to the Graveyard.
Unless a card specifically states that you can Tribute monster in your hand or monster under your opponent possession, you can only Tribute monster you control on the field.
Monsters can be Tributed either for Tribute Summons or by a card that use the word "Tribute" as a term of this act [note].

An example of a Ritual Spell Card that requires Tributes to Ritual Summon.
When a card is Tributed, it is sent to the Graveyard as a result.
Notes
^ Cards which involved Tributing formerly worded it as "offer as a Tribute", "Tributing" and "Tributed" are not actually words. This practice was eventually stopped.
