Tribute (known as Release in the OCG, Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's and Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL animes, previously known as Sacrifice in OCG, Yu-Gi-Oh! and Yu-Gi-Oh! GX animes) is the act of sending a monster from the field to the Graveyard, either for a Tribute Summon, a cost, or an effect.

Unless a card specifically states that you can Tribute monstesr in your hand or under your opponent's possession, you can only Tribute monster you control on the field.

Monsters can only be Tributed either for Tribute Summons, or by a card that use "Tribute" as a term of this act [note].

Notes

^ Cards which involved Tributing formerly worded it as "offer as a Tribute", "Tributing" and "Tributed" are not actually words. This practice was eventually stopped.
