When [[Yugi Muto]] solved the [[Millennium Puzzle (manga)|Millennium Puzzle]] in the twentieth century, he became heir to the Shadow Games and the guardian of justice.<ref name="ep 1">{{episode|Yu-Gi-Oh!|1|ref}}</ref><ref name="mov">''[[Yu-Gi-Oh! [[Yami Bakura]] turned a game of ''Duel Monsters'' that [[Yugi Muto]], [[Joey Wheeler]], [[Téa Gardner]], and [[Tristan Taylor]] were about to play against [[Bakura Ryou]] into a Shadow Game. Each of the aforementioned characters had their soul sealed in their favorite card. [[Yami Yugi]] then took control of Yugi's body and played the Shadow Game with Yami Bakura to save his friends. When a person's favorite card was played, that person would be Summoned, dressed as the card and could act on their own violation rather than obey the commands of the person who played the card. If they were destroyed, they would go the Graveyard, where they would be pursued by the [[Reaper of the Cards (character)|Reaper of the Cards]]. While most characters chose a Monster Card, Bakura Ryou choose the [[Magic Card]], "[[Change of Heart (anime)|Change of Heart]]". After it was used, his soul continued to embody the card targeted by the Magic Card. Yami Bakura lost the Duel when Yami Yugi swapped the places of the two Bakura's souls and destroyed the card Yami Bakura dwelled in.<ref>{{episode|Yu-Gi-Oh!|12|ref}}</ref><ref>{{episode|Yu-Gi-Oh!|13|ref}}</ref>
