Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie: Pyramid of Light creates some mild continuity problems within the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga/anime seriesby inserting the character of Anubis into the show's history. HoweverThe character is mentioned nowhere else in canon; despite his supposed prominence in the Pharoah's past, he does not appear during the "Dawn of the Duel" arc, though their encounter could easily take place prior to the events shown in that storyline. The scene at the start of the movie showing Yugi's completion of the Millennium Puzzle differs from that seen in the original manga, but the Duel Monsters anime never showed the puzzle's completion, if it were meaning that the movie does not contradict anything within the show itself with this scene; the original Toei anime also showed the puzzle's completion happening under different circumstances. If taken as canonical it would , the movie can be considered to take place after the events of Episode 144 of Yu-Gi-Oh!, due to the fact that Yugi has all 3 three Egyptian God cards after winning the duel against Yami Marik in Episode 142. It also most likely takes place before Episode 145 of Yu-Gi-Oh!, due to the fact that the Egyptian God cards are stolen and used against Yugi in said episode. The dubbed series had Tristan make reference to the movie's events in episode 148.
Despite being designed by Kazuki Takahashi himself, and because Anubis never made any appearances in the anime or manga (outside of this movie), he is considered a non-canon character by most fans.
