'''Illusion''' ({{Ruby|幻|げん}}{{Ruby|想|そう}}{{Ruby|魔|ま}} ''Gensōma'', lit. "Illusion Magic") is a [[Type]] of [[Monster Card]]. It originated in the [[Yu-Gi-Oh! (manga)|manga]] version of ''[[Duel Monsters (manga)|Duel Monsters]]'', first appearing in December 1997. It debuted in the ''[[TCGOCG]]'' and /''[[OCGTCG]]'' in ''[[Duelist Nexus]]'', which was released in April 2023 in the ''OCG'' and July 2023 in the ''TCG''.
The [[Dreams]] Alignment, appearing in a few early video games, is based on this Type and shares its Japanese name.
In the 1998 [[Yu-Gi-Oh! Bandai's Official Card Game|Bandai ''Carddass'']] game, the Type was assigned to "[[Dragon Capture Jar (Bandai)|Dragon Capture Jar]]" and "[[Dragon Piper (Bandai)|Dragon Piper]]", which were also cards used by Pegasus.
Illusion monsters released in the ''[[TCG]]OCG''/''[[OCG]]TCG'' have many common motifs:
* All of them incorporate the [[Eye of Wdjat]] in their designs.
* All Most [[Effect Monster]]s share the effect that no monster can be [[destroy]]ed by battles involving them (including themselves), with the exception of "[[Diabellze of the Original Sin]]".
* Most originate, or are inspired by, the [[Yu-Gi-Oh! (manga)|original manga]] and the ''[[Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters (video game series)|Duel Monsters]]'' video game series, which featured this Type and the Dreams Alignment respectively.
* Many of them feature a nearly-monochromatic abstract background.
* Some members and support cards also support a specific other Type(s), e.g. the [[Chimera]] cards encourage mixing Illusion monsters with [[Beast]]s and [[Fiend]]s, retrains (such as "[[Golgoil the Steel Seismic Smasher]]") will support both Illusion and their original Type, and various cards (both game original and imports from the anime) also support [[Spellcaster]]s.
